One of the primary reasons Coach Scot Loeffler was hired as Auburn's offensive coordinator was his successful history of developing quarterbacks. During the past season Loeffler started 3 different quarterbacks at Temple, finally settling on Chris Coyer late in the season. Scot Loeffler stated Coyer was recovering from an injury during the spring, so he had a late start in the quarterback race. Coyer eventually became the dual threat at quarterback Loeffler was searching for to maximize the output of his offense.

The play...

On this play Temple will execute a designed quarterback sweep with Chris Coyer. At the snap, the RG and RT will pull to their left as Chris Coyer fakes the hand off to Bernard Pierce. The fake to Pierce pulls the DE and 2 LB's to the RB side as Coyer sweeps to his left behind the pulling RG & RT. The tightend on the boundary side kicks out the OLB as Coyer follows his pulling linemen down field. The play picks up 14-yards and a Temple first down.

Scot Loeffler improved the Owls pass rating from 127.2 in 2010 to 142.8 in 2011. Of his three starting quarterbacks in 2011, Chris Coyer finished the season with an impressive 177.4 pass rating along with 562-yards rushing on just 69 carries. Coyer benefited from Loeffler's vertical attack styled offense with 40 percent of his completions resulting in a 15-yard gain or better. He finished the season averaging 9.26 yards per pass attempt and he was only a sophomore.

Pass Play...

On this play. Loeffler goes with a 5-WR set, facing 2nd & 14. The 3 WR's at the top of the formation will run vertical routes to clear space for the slot-WR at the bottom, running a short crossing route. The pass is completed for a 6-yard gain, making 3rd down more manageable. Note how Chris Coyer looks off his primary target to draw coverage away from the slot- WR.

Coach Loeffler has worked with pocket passers as well as dual threat quarterbacks during his coaching career. Because he attempted to recruit Kiehl Frazier to Florida, Frazier has a grand opportunity to make his move in 2012 as Auburn's starting quarterback. Because freshman Zeke Pike enrolled early, he will be able to participate during the spring but true freshman rarely start. Auburn's quarterback development will be a major key to success of the Auburn offense in 2012.
