A tackle for loss can be extremely disruptive for an offense. During the 2010 season Auburn's defense was No. 16 nationally in tackles for loss. The Tigers dropped to No. 63 nationally during 2011, which was 9th best in the conference.
Of the top-6 defenses in "tackles for loss" in the SEC during 2011, 5 of the teams finished ranked in the nation's top-10 of Total Defense.
Auburn's defense had 68 possessions, where the Tigers recorded a tackle for loss. The opponent scored a TD on 13.2% of those 68 possessions. During the remaining 92 possessions defended without a tackle for loss, the opponent scored a TD on 30.4% of their possessions.
Last season’s defensive line consisted of 14 scholarship linemen with an average of 13.5 games of experience, which included 7 with no game experience at all. The 2012 defensive line will have 17 on scholarship, which will include 7 players with at least 20 games of experience. VanGorder's will scheme to attack the gaps rather than controlling them with the DT's.
