A-Day Bootleg Pass

Last season Kiehl Frazier rushed for 327-yards in a limited role. The problem for Frazier was that he only came into the game to basically run a few basic zone-read plays or designated QB runs. Should Frazier be named the starting quarterback for 2012, look for his rushing numbers to improve. He won't carry the ball as frequently as Cameron Newton but defenses will be forced to defend Frazier as an actual quarterback and not just as an additional ball carrier. Scot Loeffler will have Frazier running the zone-read, QB draws, option play and rolling Frazier out on the edge with bootleg passes.

The play...

On this play the Auburn offense is in a 3-WR set with a TE and RB. At the snap, Kiehl Frazier will fake the give to Corey Grant, who the defense must initially defend. John Sullen (LG) pulls to the right to sell the run to the right, pulling the 2 LB's over top to the opposite side of where the ball is actually going. Brandon Fulse (TE) crashes down on the DE to seal the edge for Frazier to roll out. In frame #3, Frazier squares his shoulders looking for a target down field. With his targets taken away, Frazier pulls the ball down and turns up field for a healthy gain.

Frazier's longest run last season was 22-yards but he doesn't need to be the same type of dynamic runner Cam Newton was for the 2010 Auburn offense. Plays like the one above are the type that extend drives and takes the "will" of the opposing defense. Once again, this is a true "pass-run" option and not just a designed quarterback run, which is easier to defend. Kiehl Frazier's athletic ability gives him a huge advantage over Clint Moseley and his strong spring performance gives him the edge in being named the starter.
