More interim pass attempts needed in 2012

Scot Loeffler
Last season, AU's pass-offense dropped from it's production level compared to 2009 and 2010. There was a major drop in creating impact plays within the passing game as 54 percent of the pass attempts were within 5-yards of the line of scrimmage. During Auburn's 8 victories, the Tigers averaged a 15-yard play or better in the pass-offense every 4.7 pass attempts. During the 5 losses, the ratio dropped to 1 every 7.8 attempts.

If Scot Loeffler is to bring the bite back into the Auburn pass-offense, the Tigers must increase their point of attack with the intermediate passing game. And if the 2012 A-Day game was any hint to what to expect this upcoming season, Auburn should be more aggressive in their passing game.

The play...

On this play, the Temple offense comes out in a 3-WR set. The Owls have 2 WR's and a TE bunched on the boundary side. At the snap, the QB play-actions with the RB, making a naked-bootleg to his left. The TE crosses back right to left, exiting the backfield into the flat. The WR on the wide-side runs a fly route to the end zone. The slot-WR runs a cross-route from his right to left, which pulls the secondary to the wide-side of the field.

The boundary-WR runs a shallow post, sneaking in behind the coverage, which is now focused on the QB roll and the 3 passing options to the wide side of the field. The boundary WR basically splits the safeties as the QB completes his pass for 20-yard gain to the opponent's goal line. The play gave the QB a quick progression to work through along with a run option had everything been covered.

Nicely designed play.
