Recovering from big losses

One of the primary concerns for most AU supporters is the big losses suffered in 2011. The last time AU lost 5 games by 14 or more points in one season was 1973. The question now is how much ground can Auburn make up in one year? It's the natural fear that because Auburn was smashed 4 times last season, they will continue to struggle the following year.

It should be noted that after the dismal 1973 season, Auburn did bounce back to a 10-2 record the following season avenging 3 of the 4 losses. They did not play the 5th opponent the following year.

Since 1992, Auburn has played 24 opponents they lost to by at least 14 points the previous year. Auburn's combined record in the rematch is currently 13-11 (54.2%). In the last 14 rematches with an opponent that defeated AU by at least 14 pts the year before, AU has a 10-4 (71.4%) record the following year. It would be a great sign if Auburn can avenge 2-3 of those big losses from last year.

Dating back to 1951, there has been 14 seasons where AU suffered at least 3 losses by 14 or more points. The Tigers bounced back the following year to post at least a 9-4 record or better on 7 occasions. This included a 10-0 season in 1957, 10-2 in 1974, 11-0 in 1993 and 13-0 in 2004.

No two teams are ever the same, especially at the collegiate level.

That sounds positive, and hopeful.
I remember the 1973 season all too well.  I do think the 2012 season will be one of huge surprises for those teams that had our number last year.  I think this team will have their number, and will serve notice that Auburn is back, and Auburn is a dangerous team to be reckoned with.
