I get the concept of trying to save the planet before it gets vaporized by the sun, but wow what a giant elephant in the room left by that article (along with a few other questions). In the year 1,000,000,000 A.D., why are humans reliant upon 20th century technology for anything?

When worlds collide, but we save the whole planet this time? :-)

Our solar system is moving along its orbit of the Milky Way and should come near several star systems way before the sun becomes unstable. Our bigger problem is that as 2 solar systems come close their ort clouds will be disturbed by the gravity of the two suns and we or whoever is around then will see numerous comets pushed out of the ort clouds into the inner solar system. Mass extinctions like the one that got the dinosaurs could happen.

Of course if we can travel from one solar system to another, pushing some comets around so they miss us will be nothing.
