Obama Meeting With Central American Leaders

Finally Obama is doing something positive to address the border crisis. Talk won't solve it but it's a step in the right direction. Why did it take so long?

A step, yes...but the leaders haven't even heard of the "plan". How can anyone prepare for a meeting when they don't know what the meeting is about. Am I wrong here?

You're right but I was trying hard to say something positive about this administration. It's difficult you know.

I don't hold punches, regardless of how overblown it seems. Reality sucks sometimes.

Well, you are assuming an awful lot.

And you are as well. I'm sure if they had the plan before hand they would have stated it in vague terms. You will go to most any length to give the president a pass. It's beyond obvious ya'll elected an incompetent speech giver.

You mean like a "5 Year Plan"?

Well, here's a suggestion that reputedly came from one of the participates:

(paraphrase): "The US spends $20B a year on the (current) Mexican border. What about taking 10% of that and directing it toward government reform/economic support?"

These countries aren't that poor. The problem in Guatemala and Honduras are oligarchies of the rich and powerful who won the last war. We need to actively promote transition or reform to more representative governments. Ater all, if we intervene when we fear socialist governments, why don't we intervene against oligarchic governments? Seems to me we have more direct interest now than we ever did with the global "Communist threat".

Of course - as was pointed out on "Washington Week" - we can't even get a highway bill passed.

Sending more money will only feed the banana republic. We may need a more direct approach. And taking money from an over strapped boarder patrol is silly. Look at who is taking the brunt of this mess.

I think the suggestion was meant more to provide perspective than a literal transfer. After all, there are those calling for an absolute literal wall. How much would that cost?
