2017 3* QB Sam Ehlinger (Texas commit)

Hey guys I'm new to the forum so I just wanna say I'm super pumped to be here! I actually got an account to talk to you guys about 2017 QB Sam Ehlinger from Quarterback Factory Westlake High School (Austin, TX).

Ehlinger is a 6'2 205lb dual-threat QB who actually camped at Auburn over the summer and apparently impressed Malzahn and Lashlee so much that he got a private workout. He benches 325 and squats over 500 (last I heard it was up to 540). The kid is a physical beast and Texas HS Football coaching legend Todd Dodge took the job at Westlake for two reasons. The first one is this has been his dream job since he was at Southlake Carroll coaching up the likes of Chase Daniel and the second reason is because of this kid. Dodge has only started 2 Sophomores in his entire coaching career with Ehlinger being the second.

In just his second Varsity game going up against Rivals 100 QB (and Baylor commit) Chad President he outplayed President on his was to scoring 6 TD's (4 passing, 2 rushing) with over 350 total yards. He also camped at Baylor this past summer where he was clocked at 4.58 on the forty and impressed Briles to the point where he wanted to offer on the spot but needs to see Varsity film before he extends the official offer. Through 3 Varsity games Ehlinger has almost 1000 total yards and 11 TD's.

People are saying he's quite possibly the best QB Westlake has ever had (that includes NFL Pro Bowlers Drew Brees and Nick Foles) because he's so physically mature and athletic. The kid's talent is obvious, but the thing that I love most about him is that he possesses a mental acuity well beyond his years. He has the pocket awareness to stand in and deliver a ball when he knows he's about to get drilled. Not only that, but for kids this young with this kind of talent, their first instinct might be to run, but he has the maturity as a QB to make all of his reads before he decides to tuck it and run.

In addition to being an absolutely jaw-dropping player (really has blown my mind) he's also such an incredible kid who's overcome so much tragedy to get where he is today. His father died in a triathlon accident in San Fran about 18 months ago and Sam said he uses that to motivate him each and every day. He's truly the emotional leader on this stout Westlake team because of what he's been through. Long story short, Auburn should stay on this kid as he will probably end up being a top 100 kid when it's all said and done. Whoever ends up getting this kid is getting an instant stud.

If you don't mind I will be keeping y'all updated on Sam as he progresses throughout the season. How do I post a picture because you guys really need to see just how well put together this kid is for 15 years old.

Here are some highlights from the game against Temple HS where he amassed 6 total TD's

Ehlinger gets drilled but delivers beautiful TD:

Just so we're clear you guys, although Sam is from Austin and lives only a few miles from the Texas campus while growing up a Texas fan there is a serious mutual interest between Ehlinger and Auburn. He's not one of those kids who won't consider another team outside of his childhood favorite. He knows Texas is struggling and knows that Malzahn will give him as good a chance as any to play in the NFL. He loves the power spread Auburn runs and wants to play in a wide open offense in college. He really likes Baylor and A&M as well. He's camped at LSU, but isn't a huge fan of Les Miles (smart kiddo).

As an aside, Westlake plays in a "rivalry" game tomorrow against Austin High. I put the quotations around rivalry because it's never really competitive and Sam should be good for several hundred yards and hopefully 4 to 5 TD's without breaking a sweat. Dodge wants to let this kid play more and more in district regardless of the score because as he's so young, he needs the experience for a deep playoff run.

Great information on Sam Ehlinger. He looks very good.

We have another QB in the 2017 class that has an offer, and may be great as well. He is one of our coaches sons, Jake Bentley, who is at Opelika HS now. It will be interesting to see how many we take for 2017.

After 2016 the idea is 1 per year from there on out.

So does that mean that Sam's chances of an offer are slim because of this other kid? If they're only going to take one then why is Malzahn even recruiting Sam with the coach's kid already committed?

Bentley isn't committed to Auburn. Furthermore, as you know recruiting is fluid so even though ellitor said the "plan" was to take 1 QB every recruiting cycle after 2016 that's definitely not set in stone. QBs often transfer or sometimes move positions so Auburn may very well be looking for more than 1 QB in any given recruiting cycle.

Also, if you can get two elite QB prospects you take them. It is,after-all, the most important position on the team.

Bentley is not committed yet, and even if he was, it would be insane not to at least talk to other elite QBs in the class. A lot can happen in 2 1/2 years to shake up the recruiting plan

Ehlinger orchestrates a masterful short drive with 25 rushing yards on that drive capped by a 2-TD TD run by Bateman.

14-0 Westlake

Austin High fumbles ensuing kickoff and Westlake gets ball first and goal.

The first TD by Ehlinger was one of the most beautiful deep balls I've seen in a while.

Ehlinger takes the ball in from 3 yards. TD Westlake

21-0 Westlake 3:53 left in the 1st.

Ehlinger leads Westlake on an 87-Yd TD drive capped by a 6 yard TD run by Bateman.

35-3 Westlake

3:54 2Q

He had a beautiful 44 yard pass over the middle to Andrew Laycock to keep the drive alive from the 17 yard line.

Austin High fumbles the kickoff again. Westlake ball at the 5.

Running back runs it in from 5 yards

42-6 Westlake

Ehlinger gets his 3rd TD pass of the half on a 13-Yd strike to Andrew Laycock to make it 49-6 Westlake at half.

Ehlinger's day is likely done.

That's a pretty good whole game's worth of stats, much less a half!

Yes sir! His first half stats were:

17-24 238 yds & 3 TD's

12 carries 96 yds and 1 TD for 334 total yards

Guys, in case it wasn't clear before, this kid is absolutely legit.

Bentley is not committed. The staff will look at many QBs from now til 2017 before they decide to take one.
