Weegle777 78
Good grief, really guys? http://www.ijreview.com/2014/10/190848-watermelon-ritual-deemed-racist/ But a tradition the team started when the hot streak began has brought the team under fire and has cost Walpole his job: smashing a watermelon and eating it. The parent of a player on an opposing football team complained to a Charleston School Board member, claiming the tradition was racist: the parent said the act of smashing a watermelon was racist, and claimed that the team was making “monkey noises” as they were doing it. The school board member brought it to the principal, Dr. Nancy McGinley, who investigated the matter, The Post and Courier reports. The students, McGinley said, told Martin and Clayton that the team had participated in a ritual multiple times this season where two students would smash a watermelon with a face drawn on it with a black marker, while the remainder of the team would stand in a circle around the fruit making chanting sounds. McGinley said the image on the watermelon could be considered a “caricature.” Though the principal said the tradition was “innocent,” the school board conducted their own investigation and fired Coach Walpole on Monday. cptau 169
The coach is back, The school principal caved again but basically forced the coach agree to institute sensitivity....... http://www.charlestoncitypaper.com/HaireoftheDog/archives/2014/10/22/coach-walpole-reinstated-by-superintendent-nancy-mcginley "I met with Coach Bud Walpole at 2:00 p.m. today. I went into this meeting with an open mind prepared to listen to both his perspective and his appeal. During the meeting, he acknowledged that the facts that emerged surrounding the celebratory practices of the Academic Magnet High School football program could be viewed in a negative way. He agreed that we will work together on increasing diversity awareness for students and the community." http://www.charlestoncitypaper.com/HaireoftheDog/archives/2014/10/22/moffly-majority-of-school-boards-back-walpole-reinstatement-says-players-actions-not-racist -------------------------------------------------------------------- It appears to me that the newspaper opinion writer is the racist here. this is just another example of an organization caving in and freaking when some one uses the "racist" term to describe a person or action. People need to stop looking for things to be offended about.
