Spotlight on Jonathan Jones

One of the bright spots on defense this season has been the play of CB, Jonathan Jones. The junior corner is currently No.3 nationally in interceptions with 5 picks and No. 14 in passes-defended. His 5 interceptions through 7 games is already equal to or greater than 16 of the last 20 DB's to lead Auburn in interceptions. Last Saturday Jonathan Jones made 2 critical interceptions, coming close to making a third pick against the Gamecocks. The Auburn defense has already equaled their interception total (13) from last season. Auburn is easily on pace for a 20-interception season, which have been rare the past 14 seasons. On an average only 9 teams per season, finish the season with at least 20 interceptions (2000-2013).

The play...

On this play South Carolina faces a 3rd & 7 from the Auburn 18-yard line. The Gamecocks come out in a 4-WR set with "trips" to one side. Jonathan Jones has single coverage on the receiver at the bottom, who will run a fade-route in the corner of the end zone. At the snap, the OL attempts to chop the Auburn DT's. Gabe Wright does a great job in avoiding the low block.

Jonathan Jones plays the inside shoulder of the WR, which allows him to utilize the side line as an extra defender. Gabe Wright drives towards the QB, who manages to get his pass off but was unable to step into his pass. Because the QB was unable to step through his throw, the ball fails to make it to the corner of the end zone. Jonathan Jones fully extends for the ball, diving to make an interception in the end zone.

Both of Jones' picks came in the end zone, nullifying 88-yards of offense gained by the Gamecock offense.

Jones can cover, but it sure makes thingseasier when we get some pressure on theQB! Here's hoping we get some 'spotlight' plays from the D-line this week!
