Sadly, unlike the Bowe Bergdahl release, Tahmoressi's release wasn't a result of any of this administrations efforts. He was basically ignored altogether. However, if he had only professed Islam, our CiC probably would've gladly traded 5 or more high level terrorism operatives for his release. I mean, didn't our fearless leader say in the Rose Garden ceremony with the Bergdahl's that we never leave an American service member behind?

A word of thanks should go to Greta Van Susteren of FOX News who has doggedly stayed on this case and gave much needed media attention to it. Others have helped including former Dem. Gov. Bill Richardson (NM). Obama and Kerry should be ashamed this Marine was locked up for seven months. It will be interesting when he is interviewed. Don't know the facts or laws of the US dealing with these situations, but I do find it peculiar and somewhat worrisome that our government was willing to negotiate with a terrorist group, which is against US policy to negotiate with terrorists, but was, as far as we know, unwilling to negotiate with the Mexican government.

It is. Quite troubling at that but here's the thing. There was simply no political capital to be gleaned from it. The Bowe Bergdahl swap blew up in there collective face because they grossly miscalculated the public's response. Having egg on their face behind that fiasco probably had something to do with their unwillingness to lift a single fricking finger in Tahmoressi's behalf and they didn't.

He was more than happy to get rid of some gitmo prisoners to make that deal. Never mind the fact that by now most of them have likely resumed their former life as jihadists. This guy just made a mistake. Made a wrong turn on a highway ( the road signs weren't real clear about things and have since been changed) and ended up with no way to turn around before going back into Mexico. The State dept. should have been on this but evidently they weren't making a concerted effort to secure his release.

While searching for parking in El Paso, he said, he inadvertently drove onto a bridge leading to Mexico and could not turn around.

Now the Iraq veteran is in a Mexican jail while a judge decides whether to believe his account: that an experienced soldier accidentally ended up in a border town where drug cartels pay top dollar for exactly the kind of high-powered weapons he happened to have.
