The "Star" is basically a strong safety playing nickel back. Strong safeties still exist. Nickel backs still exist. However, CWM might want to play a CB as nickel.

USF plays a 3-4 defense, not a 4-2-5, so Alexander would likely play safety for them.

Now, if the issues we are now a 4 DB base defense, and need fewer DBs, and in the past recruited more DBs for a 5 DB base defense, that is a good point. A safety who could not crack the playing rotation in a 5 DB defense will not in a 4 DB defense.
