Yes Auburn is #4 in the nation in golf

STATESBORO, Ga. - The fourth-ranked Auburn men's golf team fired a 14-under 274 and trails No. 5 Vanderbilt by one shot after the Schenkel Invitational first round at Forest Hieghts Country Club on Friday. Freshman Ben Schlottman holds the individual lead with a career-low 6-under 66.

Schlottman's round included an eagle and five birdies, including three-straight on Nos. 11-13. The Advance, N.C., native has a a one shot lead over Vanderbilt's Matthias Schwab and Wake Forest's Cyrus Stewart.

Sophomore Will Long is tied for fourth with a career-low tying 68 that included five birdies. Senior Dan Stringfellow and junior Michael Johnson are tied for 17th with a pair of 70s while sophomore All-SEC Matt Gilchrest and freshman Matthew Perrine, who is playing as an individual, are tied for 38th at even par.

"We are really playing well right now," said Auburn head coach Nick Clinard of the Tigers, who just missed their season-low score of 15-under, third-best in school history, last weekend at the Tiger Invitational. "All of our guys shot even par or better while Ben and Will were phenomenal.

"We play 36 holes tomorrow so it is going to be a long day of golf so we need to maintain focus."

No. 16 Wake Forest is in third, five shots behind the Tigers with a 9-under 279 followed by North Carolina State (281), Georgia Southern (282), Florida (283), Kentucky (285), Iowa (285), North Florida (286) and Louisville (286) to round out the top 10.

UAB (290) is in 11th ahead of UCF (291), Ole Miss (292), College of Charleston (297) and South Alabama (306).

The three-day tournament will be shortened to two days because of impending weather on Sunday so the teams will play 36 holes with a shotgun start on Saturday. Auburn tees off in the second round on No. 1 at 7:30 am Central with Vanderbilt and Wake Forest.

UPDATE: Men's team have made some great strides this year.

STATESBORO, Ga. - The fourth-ranked Auburn men's golf team won the Schenkel Invitational by firing a school record-tying 269 second round and 280 third round to defeat No. 6 Vanderbilt (273-282-269--824) by one stroke at the Forest Heights Country Club on Saturday.

The Tigers (274-269-280--823) had the second-lowest 54-hole score in school history as senior Dan Stringfellow earned his first career collegiate victory with a 12-under 204 final.

The teams played 36 holes on Saturday, and the Tigers fired a 19-under 269 in the morning round for a seven shot lead over the Commodores entering the afternoon's final round. Vanderbilt had a 19-under final round while Auburn was 8-under.

"It is just a great team win, and we showed a lot of fortitude," said Auburn head coach Nick Clinard. "I am extremely happy for Dan on winning his first tournament and Ben Schlottman and Will Long were right there. "It was great tournament golf and a win we can be proud of. Three tournament wins in a row is very exciting. We just need to keep getting better. We had each of our guys step up."

Auburn's second round 269 tied the 2008 team's performance at the John Burns third round for the second lowest round in school history, and the final 41-under 283 is the second-lowest 54-hole score in school-history, also since the 2008 John Burns where the Tigers shot a 44-under 820.

Stringfellow(70-65-69--204), who had eight birdies in the second round and five in the third, edged out teammates freshman Ben Schlottman (66-68-71--205) and sophomore Will Long (68-68-69--205), as well as Vanderbilt's Matthias Schwab (67-70-78--205) and Theo Humphrey (68-71-66--205) by one stroke to earn medalist honors. His second round 7-under 65 is the lowest of his career and tied for the third lowest 54-hole score in school history.

Schlottman had seven birdies in the second round, with three straight on holes 7-9 and finished with a 4-under 68 second round and 1-under 71 final round. Long finished all three rounds in the 60s, shooting a second round 4-under 68 and final round 3-under 69. The tie for second is the highest career finish for both golfers.

All-SEC and Ben Hogan Award Watch List member Matt Gilchrest fired a second round 4-under 68, his team-leading 11th round in the 60s this season, and a final round 1-under 71 to finish tied for 17th with a 211 total. Freshman Matthew Perrine (72-72-69--213), playing as an individual tied for 31st after firing a final round 3-under 69 and Junior Michael Johnson (70-74-71--215) tied for 37th.

Georgia Southern (282-278-284--844) finished third followed by Kentucky (285-283-278--846), No. 16 Wake Forest (279-289-279--847), NC State (281-290-276--847), UAB (290-274-284--848), North Florida (286-282-286--854), Iowa (285-283-291--859), UCF (291-286-283--860) and College of Charleston (297-283-280--860).

Florida (283-291-287--861) finished 12th followed by Louisville (286-289-295--870), Ole Miss (292-295-284--871) and South Alabama (306-303-288--897). The Tigers return to action March 29-30 at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate at the Bulls Bay Golf Course in Awendaw, South Carolina.

Well crap I guess no one cares that we're #4 in the country in golf................. :realmad: :realmad: this hurts golf/yours truly feelings and you really don't want to do that.

War Eagle!! Those are some good rounds the boys fired off. Good to see the golf team, and other tiger sports teams outside of football, playing at such a high level. The lady tigers softball team is on fire!
