cptau 169
Nothing new. People with money have been buying influence and government jobs since the beginning of the country. The only way to fix it would be an amendment to the constitution similar to this. However politicians could no longer afford to buy millions of dollars of campaign travel and advertising from TV and newspapers. So the owners of the media would oppose it just for that. "Candidates for federal elected office may only accept campaign contributions from individual US citizens who are eligible to vote for the candidate. The amount per citizen per year is limited to no more than 1% of the annual salary for the federal elected office sought. The limitation also applies to a candidate’s own personal contributions." No it's much more worst than what Madison could ever dream of. We are pretty damn close to an oligarchy.

homersapien 11,354
http://www.commondre...cientific-study "....What the authors are able to find, despite the deficiencies of the data, is important: the first-ever scientific analysis of whether the U.S. is a democracy, or is instead an oligarchy, or some combination of the two. The clear finding is that the U.S. is an oligarchy, no democratic country, at all. American democracy is a sham, no matter how much it's pumped by the oligarchs who run the country (and who control the nation's "news" media). The U.S., in other words, is basically similar to Russia or most other dubious "electoral" "democratic" countries. We weren't formerly, but we clearly are now. Today, after this exhaustive analysis of the data, “the preferences of the average American appear to have only a minuscule, near-zero, statistically non-significant impact upon public policy.” That's it, in a nutshell." I think I have seen this study, or at least parts of it.

I think I have seen this study, or at least parts of it. The federal government was intended to be limited, inefficient, and controllable by the states and their citizens. Since 1865 the federal government has become more and more powerful. The states should never allowed the federal government unlimited power to tax people and business. That and misuse of the interstate commerce clause has allowed too much power transfer.
