I forget, is Egypt one of the good countries or one of the bad?

Egyptian Court Sentences 3 Al Jazeera Journalists To Prison

CAIRO, Aug 29 (Reuters) - An Egyptian court sentenced three Al Jazeera TV journalists to three years in prison on Saturday for operating without a press license and broadcasting material harmful to Egypt, a case that has stirred an international outcry.

The verdict in a retrial was issued against Mohamed Fahmy, a naturalized Canadian who has given up his Egyptian citizenship, Baher Mohamed, an Egyptian, and Peter Greste, an Australian who was deported in February.

Rights advocates say their arrest was part of a crackdown on free speech waged since the army overthrew President Mohamed Mursi, a senior Muslim Brotherhood figure, in July 2013 following mass unrest over his rule......

The current President , Al Sisi, has spoken out against radical Militant Islam, and closed down many mosques. He even attended Christmas mass in Abasseya cathedral, which was kind of a big deal.

He's made a stance against the Muslim Brotherhood, those who Obama has backed, so while most here would say Egypt is generally on the good guy side, you probably will take the opposite view.

I know people don't want to believe it, but Al Jazeera is not some mouthpiece for Islam. It is actually the most balanced and professional of the news services out there. Al Jazeera America does some top notch reporting.

I suppose they have to be Americans for people to get really riled up.

You sound just like Hillary.

And I'm sure that Egypt has a thing against top notch professional reporters.

Yep.

What the hell? :dunno:

Human rights groups have accused Egyptian authorities of rolling back freedoms won in the 2011 popular uprising that toppled veteran autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

In June, the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists said Egypt was holding at least 18 journalists behind bars, the highest number since record-keeping began in 1990. They were being held on the pretext of national security to crack down on media freedoms, it said.

Speaking after the verdict, the British ambassador to Egypt, John Casson, said the country's stability should not be built on a "shaky foundation which deprives people of their rights and undermines the freedom of the press and freedom of expression."

Egypt says it has launched a security crackdown in order to eradicate Islamist militant "terrorists" and deliver stability.

Amnesty International called Saturday's verdict "farcical."

"The fact that two of these journalists are now facing time in jail following two grossly unfair trials makes a mockery of justice in Egypt," said Philip Luther, Amnesty's Director for the Middle East and North Africa. With 18 journalists in prison, it sounds to me they are a lot more concerned about a free press than they are with terrorists.

What sort of "stability" are you talking about anyway? The sort the Chinese enforced at Tinanmen Square?

That's up to them to decide, isn't it ? I didn't bring up the issue of stability.

Evidently there's a conversation happening in your head that's different from the one I'm involved in.

Well yeah, actually you did. You quoted the Egyptian government and made a sarcastic comment about it implying support.

Well, Hillary has praised A.J. , in much the same manner as you have, whether you're aware of it or not.

In a promotional montage of images and clips, Al Jazeera America played a clip of Hillary Clinton saying that Al Jazeera is “real effective,” and “viewership is going up because it’s real news.”

http://www.breitbart.com/big-journalism/2013/08/20/al-jazeera-america-opens-with-mccain-hillary-endorsements/

And to be fair, John McCain had praise for AJA too, which says a great deal about him as well.

Stopped clocks get time right twice a day. Big deal.

I suppose you have some evidence ready at hand to show why AJA isn't a good source of news. And by "evidence" I don't mean, "Hillary likes it so it must be tainted."

Muslims lie. That's my evidence.

:P

But seriously, have you EVER seen a politician go out of their way to praise a news organization for doing what news organizations are suppose to do, by their very definition ?

Both Hillary AND McCain did it, so that sets off my Spidey senses a bit.

Sorry, that's all I have. And all I care to have, for that matter.

Have you not noticed that the vast majority of news organizations now DO NOT do what they are supposed to do, by their very definition? So when you run across one that actually does it, why wouldn't you go out of your way to point it out?

Titan - when have they ever " done their job "? Going back to Cronkite & beyond.

But that could also be said about FOXNews, and how they report the news without the left-wing slant but it appears to some that they're being overly conservative.

It sounds to me as if Hillary and McCain are overly trying to placate/appease the international community by praising a Muslim based network. It just seems weird.

Some of the stuff I read here is pure comedy. Here are some other good Mid-east news outlets. Al Jazeera isnt the only one.

I'm just going on what I've read and watched personally. I was struck by the even handling of issues, the lack of opinion being inserted into the news, and that even as I was looking for it, I couldn't identify a consistent tendency to insert left or right leanings.

People use to think, and many still do think, that the mainstream media , everybody but Fox, just reported the news and did not give opinion. That changed when the FOXNews appeared on the scene, and everybody could now see that what was once considered unbiased was in fact slanted and very biased.

Where is the comedy? How is this in anyway a reply to what I said about Hillary and McCain, or any other politician who so casually praises a news outlet ?

It's not a reply. Just highlighting the comedy.

I don't doubt that. I think the arrival of Fox did highlight the bias that had permeated the news. I also however think that Fox counterbalances that by inserting conservative bias into the news rather than just playing it even.

But now that Fox has illuminated that, I notice the implicit biases on both sides. And that's what makes Al Jazeera America stick out to me. I'm sure they have some biases as well (it's impossible not to) but it seems that they work harder and more successfully to not do that. I don't think Fox or MSNBC really even try that hard not to.

Bizzaro world.

A blatantly conservatively-biased broadcaster comes on the scene so by definition, everyone else is leftist. :-\
