Laws rarely go into effect on February 8th. And this is not one of those rare occasions.

Alabama's open carry law went into effect August 1st, 2013. I have yet to see anyone open carrying in a public place. I have also not seen any proliferation of anti-gun signs. Maybe I don't get out enough?

I don't know why anyone would want to open carry their personal protection gun. My wife, my daughter and I all concealed carry (with permits, of course) everywhere that it's legal to do so. We wouldn't want any potential violent criminals to know beforehand that we're a person that's a threat to them.

I think the motivations for open carry are different than those for concealed carry.

Mikey, serious question, and I want to say up front that I am not criticizing your decision to carry conceal. In AL, it is your right to do so. However, is crime that high that you think you will be attacked just going out? I'm seriously not flaming, just trying to understand. Based on your posts here, I assume (maybe not accurately) that you live in a rather rural area. I can't imagine crime is that out of control.

Ah I see. I saw the date on the article but missed the small print that the law went into effect Jan.1. Now let me ask.......does that small fact change the content/message of the article :dunno:

I wasn't challenging your article, just pointing out that law prompted business owners to assert their rights.

The article below that is interesting also:

"The experts we spoke with about the city’s underground gun market said that price plays a major role in which types of guns criminals acquire. According to Thomas Aherns, an ATF Senior Special Agent based in Chicago, gun traffickers regularly purchase firearms at gun shows and then sell them on the city’s streets at a mark-up of two to three times the market price."

Gun owners have Kory Watkins and his merry band of idiots to blame. He does more for gun control in Texas than anyone else.

If an "ATF Senior Special Agent based in Chicago" isn't, then who is?

This is more of the issue that people I knew thought was coming. That is with business that have policies on how they want it addressed on their property.

Like in this case. Wal-Mart will allow you to open carry if you show them you license. Has to do with them covering themselves involving Texas Liquor laws, and them trying to straddle the customer line. Cause there are those that are boycotting places that won't allow open carry and those that are boycotting places that do. So this guy is asked to show his license to carry in their store. Instead of showing or leaving as asked he argues and makes a scene.

First off, carrying a weapon is not an huge inconvenience. In a short time it gets to be similar to carrying your wallet and cell phone. You just get used to it.

We do live in the sticks. Auburn/Opelika is "town", which is 35 miles away. While there aren't frequent incidents around here, we all feel that it's better to have the gun and not need it than need it and not have it. If a person could predict the time and place that the gun would be needed, you'd never need a gun. Just don't go to that place at that time.

I forgot to mention the newest member of our gun-totin' family. A granddaughter who lives in North Carolina just turned 21 and had her rig picked out well ahead of time. Prior to reaching the magic age she had carried a serious knife in her boot for several years.

All I can say is "The Times, They Are A' Changin". For 27 years I worked for USDA, at times going alone into some of the most remote and isolated spots imaginable and at other times into some places thought to be dangerous for various other reasons. I never felt the need to take any sort of weapon with me. However, with the drug crazies that are around today, the world is becoming a more dangerous place. All the members of my family were in the Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts in years past. Their "Be Prepared" motto seems to have stuck with us.

We all hope and expect that the bad day when we might need to use our weapons never comes. If it does come, we hope the incident ends with us being the ones that are still standing up.

Thanks, I appreciate your perspective. While both my parents have carry conceal licenses, I have never known them to carry. I think they did it more for the safety training involved with getting your license as they like to shoot for recreation. My husband is a hunter, and so we have shotguns in the house, but nothing more. Conceal carry as you described it up thread makes way more sense to me if you are truly looking to carry for a safety reason. Open carry laws make no sense to me at all and I think it causes more fear than necessary.
