AUBURN, Alabama -- Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder has been named Auburn's defensive coordinator.

The Falcons confirmed the hiring this afternoon.

He's been with the Falcons for four seasons. He was also linebackers coach with Atlanta and Jacksonville in the NFL. He was Georgia's defensive coordinator from 2001-04 and the head coach at Georgia Southern in 2006. Other coaching stops have included Central Florida and Central Michigan.

VanGorder received the Frank Boyles as college football's assistant coach of the Year in 2003 for his work at Georgia.

Wow. I have to say, I did not see that coming, but that is a wonderful hire. That dude can coach. Tip of the cap to Chizik.

I'm wondering if that means both Lolley and Thigpen remain in their current positions (VanGorder is a LB coach by trade). I don't love Lolley as a position coach.

Smith: I personally want to thank Brian for all the hard work he put in for our football team and Atlanta.

Chizik actually replaced VanGorder as DC at Central Florida in 1998. They competed against each other as SEC coordinators from 2002-04.

That's a monster hire for Auburn in my opinion. Van Gorder was a great coach at Georgia, and with the Falcons.

Big get for Auburn. Stylistically, VanGorder's scheme fits Chizik's defensive philosophy

Georgia fans pined for Van Gorder's return for years, wonder how they'll spin this as bad news for Auburn?
