Worthy of it's own discussion thread, who's going to replace Lolley as Secondary coach?

Willie Martinez to Auburn? I hear it likely will happen.

not excited--thought he did a horrible job at UGA. Richt firing him, bought Richt one more year.

I agree with Big Blue. From what I heard he was horrible. Hopefully we look elsewhere.

Guy called local radio show this week and said, "We already had a Big 12 caliber Defense" point was kinda accurate.

Except that he was the defensive coordinator (along with secondary coach) at UGA. IF he comes to Auburn he won't be defensive coordinator. Some coaches are better suited as position coaches over being coordinators, just like some coaches are better suited at being coordinators over being a head coach.

I trust that CGC & BVG will hire the best man for the job. If Martinez is their choice I'll be 100% behind him. I'm certain these two fine defensive minds will hire the best coach they can. WDE!!

I'm not wild about it but I doubt he'd be a terrible pick. I watched the ESPN stuff with OU this offseason and I loved the swagger and attitude of their DBs. They weren't afraid to hit at least.

Looks impressive to me....

Coaching Accomplishments• Impressive first year with Oklahoma as safety Quinton Carter was a consensus All-American and first-year starter Jamell Fleming, a corner, topped the Big 12 and ranked No. 2 nationally in passes defended. Safety Tony Jefferson was named the Big 12 Defensive Freshman of the Year. As a team, OU ranked No. 8 nationally in pass efficiency defense.

• Over the past 10 years, 14 of Martinez's defensive backs were selected in the NFL Draft.

• Spent nine years at Georgia where he was part of a staff that led UGA to 90 victories, two SEC championships, three SEC Eastern Division titles, seven bowl victories and six top-10 finishes in the final national polls including No. 2 in 2007 and No. 3 in 2002.

• The 2007 Georgia defense finished first in the SEC and
eighth nationally in sacks (42) and 14 nationally in total
defense.

• His 2006 defense ranked eighth nationally in total
defense, fifth in pass defense and first in the SEC in third
down efficiency.

• Under Martinez, the 2005 Georgia defense was eighth in the country in scoring defense (16.4 ppg) and seventh in pass defense.

• On a staff that led the 2003 SEC Eastern Division
champion Georgia defense that finished second nationally
in scoring defense (14.5 ppg), fourth in total defense
(276.86 ypg), sixth in passing defense (174.50 ypg, first
in the SEC), 14th nationally in turnover margin (+.79) and fourth in number of scoreless quarters (25) among the AP's final top-10 teams.

• The 2002 Georgia defense finished first in the SEC and
fourth nationally in scoring defense (15.1 ppg), first in the
SEC in red zone defense (58.8%), second in the SEC in
rushing defense (114.0 ypg) and allowed only 31 second
half points in the final seven games of the season.

• Coached a Central Michigan defense in 2000 that led the nation in pass defense (149.7 ypg).

• Tutored Brian Leigeb, who led the MAC in tackles and
was third nationally with 13.36 per game in 2000.

• Was part of a Central Michigan staff that won the 1994
MAC Championship before playing in the Las Vegas Bowl.

Willie was a disaster as a DC, but like others have said, that has absolutely no bearing on his ability to coach CBs. It's a very different task.

The hire wouldn't blow me away, but it'd be an improvement. Love Phillip Lolley, but I've never been impressed with him as a coach. I expect Chris Davis and the gang to improve no matter who we hire.

Martinez just got fired from Oklahoma because his DB's weren't satisfactory. Rumor around UGA was that Coach BVG left UGA because Richt wouldn't fire Willie. I guess we'll see....

If true... I doubt we'll see him in Auburn unless he's coaching for another team. We'll see....

Thats not true. He was told to look elsewhere because Mike Stoops wanted back in at Oklahoma. Mike Stoops' arrival also prompted the exit of Brent Venables who was initially supposed to stay as "Co-DC". Thats what happens when the HC wants to bring his brother in.

Great message to the coaches on staff-- the HC sees the football program as a jobs program for his family members.

metafour, are you saying that Martinez would be a great pick for the Auburn job? That Stoops was delighted with Martinez's performance but fired him anyway just to give his brother a job? Tell us the inside scoop here!
