First day in full pads...

Quote

Brief notes from the first 20 minutes at Auburn: John Sullen's back on the practice field.
...
From the very brief moment we saw of full team, it looked like Blake Burgess is working some at fullback.
...
Also, Scot Loeffler was running a little quarterback with the line while Frazier, Moseley, et al were warming up.
...
Jake Lembke and Michael Sulka continue to handle the long-snapping duties.
...
Some interesting stuff at linebacker: Both Jonathan Evans and Justin Garrett were going through formations at strongside linebacker.
...
Cassanova McKinzy and Jake Holland, in that order, were lined up at MLB for formation stuff. No idea if that means anything.

Also, Daren Bates took some strong reps, Jonathan Evans and Justin Garrett took some weak reps. Kris Frost still on strong side.
...
Among those returning kicks today were Jovon Robinson, Onterio McCalebb, Mike Blakely and Tre Mason.

"We've got a long way to go. It's good that we have a long way to go before we play a game."
...
VanGorder on Whitehead: "He's done a real good job at safety. ... Very smart player."
...
VanGorder: "I think (LB), there's a sense of urgency to get that settled in and get some consistency there."
...
VanGorder: "Linebacker in our system takes a lot of work."
...
VanGorder: "Training camp's different than spring ball. We're 24 days or something like that from playing our first game."
...
VanGorder says Dee Ford hasn't looked quite as sharp as he did at the end of spring ball.
...
VanGorder: "Really like Nosa's attitude. ... Kenny's done a good job, should help us. But those guys are behind, but they're good workers."
...
VanGorder, asked if there's any semblance of a depth chart at linebacker: "No. Completely wide-open."
...
VanGorder: "Jeff (Whitaker)'s one of those consistent players. ... He's got a solid role for us."
...
Asked where Auburn's defense can be for the first game, VanGorder quips: "Hopefully, we're at the Georgia Dome."
...
Asked about his son, Mack VanGorder with another quip: "I keep asking the other coaches if he's getting a fair deal."
...
On JaViere Mitchell, after sitting out spring, VanGorder says: "He looks lost. Way lost. He's a smart kid, he's just behind."
...
VanGorder: "Right now we have a group of linebackers, their numbers in the mental error category aren't good."
...
VanGorder on McKinzy: "I have (been impressed). He has some production ability. He's a bigger player that can run."
...
VanGorder's message on the LBs right now: They're all making mental errors, and if that's the case, it comes down to production.

Gene Chizik: "I thought the first day in pads, there was a lot of energy, which was really good. ... I think today was a good start."
...
Chizik: "No, John Sullen did not do everything today. We're working him back in." Sullen did not go contact.
...
On guys flip-flopping spots at weak and strongside linebacker, Chizik says Auburn would prefer not to do that, but the Tigers are now.
...
Auburn will scrimmage for the first time on Wednesday.
...
Chizik: "I think every scrimmage is going to be big for the quarterbacks. ... It's the first test after seven practices."
...
Jonathan Evans is behind in terms of picking up the scheme, Chizik said, due to his time missed in the spring.

Sammie Coates on foot injury: "When I hurt it... I knew it was going to be a big problem."
...
Coates: "Last fall, I didn't get to get real physical at all. This year, I'm in there, putting my head in there and blocking."
...
Coates: "I've got a point to prove."
...
Coates: (Loeffler) makes sure everybody gets the ball. ... There's a lot of action. I love it."
...
Coates: "From the spring to now, I've gotten a whole lot better."
...
Trovon Reed trusts Sammie Coates's hands. He just chucked his iPhone across the Rane Room to the freshman.
...
Reed: "When I first got here, injuries was one of my biggest things, because I didn't lift in high school." He's up to 195 pounds.
...
When Reed arrived on campus two years ago, he was 163 pounds. "When you gain weight in the right places, it makes you faster."
...
Reed: "Last year, it was more reverses and screens. This year, I'm doing actual route-running."
...
Reed: "It's going to be very different. Y'all are probably used to seeing the trick plays, but this offense, we're going to out-physical."
...
Anthony Morgan had a shoulder injury. He's played WR, DB, RB and now WR again.
...
Emory Blake on NFL-style offense: "It's great for me. Even the terminology they use is the stuff they use in the league."
...
Blake: "T-Reed has improved a lot. ... He's gotten a lot stronger. You can tell by the difference on the field."
...
Blake on the offense: "I'm excited. I don't think people know right now what we're capable of."

...
McNeal said there's a lot more thinking involved with Auburn's defense now. It challenges football knowledge.
...
McNeal said lot of players weren't into playbook last year because D was so easy. But this year, the playbook has been cracked open a lot.
