  1. Through the first 5 games of the season, Auburn made up for their lack of a pass-rush from their front-4, with a variety of blitzes. Against Mississippi State, Auburn's blitzes were always a step behind resulting in only 4 quarterback hurries and 1 sack. Through 6 games the Auburn DL is responsible for only 58.1% of the teams quarterback hurries and 50% of the team's sacks. Last season the DL was responsible for 92.2% of the sacks and 83.6% of the team's quarterback hurries. Angelo Blackson recorded his first sack of the season against Mississippi State, which is today's clipbit. The play... On this play MSU faces a 3rd & 9 from their own 27-yard line. The Bulldogs will come out in a 5-WR set. Auburn will counter with a 4-man rush, executing a twist with their DT's, At the snap Ben Bradley will loop over Angelo Blackson as Gimel President comes on a speed-rush over top. Angelo Blackson will break through inside, forcing the MSU QB to scramble. Prescott attempts to take off up the middle but Ben Bradley has solid gap containment, forcing Prescott to scramble outside the pocket. Angelo Blackson continues his track to the QB, running him down from behind for the sack. Gabe Wright (7) and Elijah Daniel (6) are the current leaders among the DL in QB hurries and DaVonte Lambert is the only DL with more than 1 sack this season.
  2. If the Auburn defense is going to have success against the LSU offense, Ellis Johnson will need to call a more aggressive game. We will likely see more man coverage so that Auburn can overload in run-support. This also means the potential of giving up big plays but it's the gamble Johnson will likely have to take Saturday night. Zach Mettenberger has gotten off to a great start for LSU but has struggled when facing 3rd & 10 or longer. On the flip side, Auburn's defense has only given up 4 of 20 conversions on 3rd down, when the opponent has faced 10-yards or more to convert. On this play MSU faces a 3rd & 14 from their own 48-yard line. Ellis Johnson dials up a zone-blitz with Kris Frost coming up the middle and Robenson Therezie off the edge. Angelo Blackson will back out into coverage at the snap. At the snap, Kris Frost and LaDarius Owens establish penetration into the backfield, forcing the MSU QB to step up in the pocket. Robenson Therezie arrives and is able to slow the QB down by holding his foot. Joshua Holsey closes in and holds the QB until other Tigers arrive to finish off the play. If Auburn cannot place LSU into 3rd & long, it could be a long night for the Auburn defense. Expect LSU to have their share of yardage but Auburn needs to counter with tackles for loss and turnovers to make it a game.
  3. Last season was No. 73 nationally in TFL per game on defense primarily because of a lack of push by the Auburn front-4. This season under Defensive Coordinator Ellis Johnson and Coach Rodney Garner, the defense is currently No. 6 nationally in TFL per game and No. 2 in the SEC. The defense registered 13 tackles for loss this past Saturday against the Red Wolves, which had not been accomplished since 2004 against Kentucky. Through 2 games Auburn has recorded 29 quarterback hurries, which is more than half of the 55 recorded through 12 games during 2012. On this play Auburn will execute a double-stunt as ASU faces an obvious passing situation on 3rd down. Justin DeLaine has a clear path to the QB after Angelo Blackson ties up 2 OL. Gabe Wright simply beats his man inside as the two DL race to the ASU quarterback. To his credit, the ASU quarterback is able to avoid being sacked by DeLaine and Wright but LaDarius Owens and Angelo Blackson arrive just in time to swallow up the QB, taking him down for the sack. On this one play alone, all 4 DL had their hands on the opposing quarterback. Despite not having Dee Ford available through the first 2 games, Auburn has managed to improve their pass-rush from 2012, which has kept Ellis Johnson from having to blitz on a regular basis just to manage some level of pass-rush. What was feared to be a possible weakness before the season began is pleasantly turning into a team strength.
  4. Auburn's defense has struggled against spread offenses this season and the zone-read has been difficult to stop for the Tigers. Ole Miss and Vanderbilt found success on the ground against the Tigers, something Auburn must improve on. On this occasion, Brian VanGorder calls a line stunt and a CB blitzing off the edge to defend the zone-read play. The play... Vanderbilt has a 1st & 10 at the Auburn 33, set to run their zone-read. At the snap, Gabe Wright and run a stunt with Wright going outside and Corey Lemonier looping over the top of Wright but not attacking the line. Angelo Blackson beats the center inside as the hand off is made to the RB. The QB reads the outside containment and gives to the back, who is immediately under duress from Angelo Blackson. The RB attempts to cut to his right but now faces Jonathan Mincy blitzing off the edge. Mincy gave a presnap look of covering the slot-WR but blitzes at the snap with Daren Bates jumping outside to cover the slot-WR. The RB is now trapped in the backfield and a fumble is forced, which is recovered by the Tigers. Though Auburn's offense was unable to score off the turnover the defense did manage to snuff out a Vanderbilt scoring drive.
  5. How does Auburn isolate Corey Lemonier by rushing only 3, allowing him a 1 on 1 match up to the quarterback? It comes down to confusing the opposing offensive line by showing 7 possible pass-rushers but not tipping off who is actually coming on a possible blitz. Coach Brian VanGorder has brought this element to the Auburn defense by showing multiple fronts and disguised blitz packages. This element has enabled the Auburn defense to improve it's production on third down, especially third & long situations. The play... On this play the LSU offense faces a 3rd & 4 from their own 32-yard line. LSU comes out in a 4-WR & 1 TE set (empty backfield) and Auburn counters with a zone-blitz look. Just before the snap, Auburn has 7 defenders that could come on a pass-rush. LSU must determine which 3-6 defenders will come on the pass-rush. At the snap, Auburn elects to rush only 3 and cover with 8. Corey Lemonier, Angelo Blackson and Erique Florence will come on the pass-rush, which sets up a 1 on 1 situation for Lemonier with the LT. The LT will attempt to chop Lemonier at the line but the attempt fails. The 8 defenders in coverage and tight coverage allows Corey Lemonier the extra second needed to blind side the quarterback. Corey Lemonier wraps of the quarterback and strips the football. Angelo Blackson is triple teamed at one point but manages to work through the congestion in time to recover the lose football on the turf. This play created a short field for the Auburn offense and set up Auburn's only touchdown of the game.
  6. It's difficult to be overly critical of a team that lost to the No. 2 in the nation by 2 points. It seemed like every time Auburn made a positive play, it was matched by a negative play. The defense clearly played well enough to win this game but in the end, it was the offense that prevented Auburn from securing a memorable upset. The offense crossed midfield only 1 time during the second half, finishing with only 183-yards in total offense. There simply were too many negative plays on offense and a surprising number of perimeter run plays. In a game, the coaching staff lacked confidence in their quarterback as the game progressed; Tre Mason should've had more carries than Onterio McCalebb. Of his 11 carries, McCalebb was thrown for a loss, 6 times. Auburn went with a youth movement on defense in the secondary and it should payoff royally down the road. Even though Jonathan Evans misplayed the late throwback pass, the defense got two thumbs up for keeping Auburn in the entire game. Not only did the Auburn defense take on an offense that entered the game, scoring 48-points, they also ended up having to defend against a poor Auburn offense as well as a breakdown on special teams. The defense clearly took a major step in improvement but they cannot be asked to compete against their own offense. Credit should be given to the coaching staff for having the players ready to play against one of the best teams in the country and laid to rest all of the talk about this team being soft. Fortunately for this team, they have the extra week to get over the emotional letdown of losing a game; they came so close to winning. Though this team is not searching for moral victories, it is important they realize they did take a step forward in becoming a competitive team. The 2012 Auburn Tigers remain a work in progress but this heart breaking loss can still be a major building block in becoming a much better team. Inside the Numbers… Kiehl Frazier was 9 of 10 in his passes within 5-yards of the line of scrimmage but went 4 of 12 in his passes beyond 5-yards of the line of scrimmage. Frazier completed only 2 of his 8 third down passes. Frazier was 11 of 13 passing on 1st and 2nd downs but struggled passing on 3rd down. Tre Mason finished with 54-yards on 9 carries and Onterio McCalebb had 24-yards on 11 carries. It was baffling to see the number of perimeter run plays with McCalebb, when it was clear that Mason was a much more effective runner between the tackles. Jeff Whitaker had his best game of the season with 4 stops and a fumble recovery. Though Angelo Blackson had only 2 stops, he continued to be a disruptive force in the interior line. In Auburn's last 25 games, Auburn has won the tackle for loss battle only 5 times. The last time Auburn was tackled for loss at least 14 times during a game was the 1999 Ole Miss game. After giving up 57.5 yards per possession during the first 2 possessions, the Auburn defense held LSU to 21.4 yards per possessions during the last 11 possessions. The Auburn offense has been held to under 20-points in 9 of their last 13 games. Since 1981 and prior to tonight, Auburn has allowed an average of 26-points per game, when their offense was held to under 200-yards in offense. Another testament to how well the defense performed. Auburn has now gone 16 consecutive games without throwing for at least 200-yards, slowly closing in on the 18 consecutive games from 1984-1985. Over the past 50 seasons, the 2012 Auburn pass-offense is currently rated as the 34th best. Of the last 34 Auburn pass-offenses that averaged at least 20 pass attempts per game, the 2012 pass-offense has the second lowest yards per game average (144.8 YPG). During Auburn's last 700 games, the Tigers have held their opponent to under 13-points in 261 games, posting a record of 242-17-2. Final Word… Until Auburn resolves their issues on pass-offense, it will be difficult for Auburn to defeat any team with a pulse. In this modern era of football, you must be able to throw the football consistently, something Auburn has failed to do since 2010. Scot Loeffler still remains a work in progress as a play-caller but you have to wonder how much better the offense would be with a consistent pass-offense. Though Kiehl Frazier is still attempting to improve it will be interesting to see how long the coaching staff will stick with him before making a change to spark the pass-offense. The quarterback position can be a tricky situation because you want to allow time for a young player to develop but you don't want to squander opportunities to win like tonight. I thought it was a tremendous gesture by Jason Campbell to reach out Kiehl Frazier. The 1-3 start is rough to say the least but it's come against 3 ranked opponents and a combined record of 12-3 on the season. One could argue this team could be at least 3-1 with an above average pass-offense. The passing issues are not all Kiehl Frazier but he has done a poor job of taking care of the football. He is currently on pace to throw over 20 interceptions during the regular season. His quarterback rating after tossing his first interception of the game is 83.7 and 144.8 before the first pick. This is a strong indicator his performance diminishes even more after making that first critical mistake, like many young quarterbacks do. Coach Loeffler will need to continue working with the struggling quarterback with the hope there is still potential for growth this season. I'm not advocating a change at quarterback because there have been moments in every game this season, where you see the "wow" factor, when he steps into a throw and zings a pass right to his receiver. When I see those types of completions by Frazier, I know he could be very good if he could just string them back to back. I've also seen previous Auburn quarterbacks struggle early but developed into solid starters in time. The disappointment comes knowing Auburn has to endure games like last night during Frazier's maturation process. It's easy to wish or believe there is a better option sitting on the bench but that is rarely the case in reality. Despite Auburn's losing record, this team still has potential to be a competitive squad. The running game with better execution and play calling can be very reliable. The defense continues to improve and special teams except for punt-return offense has been very good all season. Standing in their way is a struggling pass-offense, untimely penalties and too many turnovers. If Auburn has any chance of finishing with a winning record, they have to clean up their self-destructive ways, which has haunted them in every game this season. The good news is that they showed plenty of life and fight against the No. 2 team in the nation, which will hopefully carry over against Arkansas in two weeks. War Eagle!
  7. A tackle for loss can be extremely disruptive for an offense. During the 2010 season Auburn's defense was No. 16 nationally in tackles for loss. The Tigers dropped to No. 63 nationally during 2011, which was 9th best in the conference. Of the top-6 defenses in "tackles for loss" in the SEC during 2011, 5 of the teams finished ranked in the nation's top-10 of Total Defense. Auburn's defense had 68 possessions, where the Tigers recorded a tackle for loss. The opponent scored a TD on 13.2% of those 68 possessions. During the remaining 92 possessions defended without a tackle for loss, the opponent scored a TD on 30.4% of their possessions. Last season’s defensive line consisted of 14 scholarship linemen with an average of 13.5 games of experience, which included 7 with no game experience at all. The 2012 defensive line will have 17 on scholarship, which will include 7 players with at least 20 games of experience. VanGorder's will scheme to attack the gaps rather than controlling them with the DT's. 2012 could be a good year for AU's growing DL.
