  1. Depending on pending injuries or weather, I would expect the Auburn offense to play well against Wisconsin. Gus Malzahn has coached in 10 combined Bowl games and Conference Championships at the collegiate level. During those 10 games, his offense averaged 498.6 YPG and 39.9 PPG. His teams went 7-3 during those 10 outings. This includes 6 games at Auburn, where his offense averaged 518.8 YPG and 41.5 PPG. This includes a 5-1 mark at Auburn. Auburn will check in with Nick Marshall at QB, CAP at RB, along with Sammie Coates, Duke Williams and Quan Bray at WR. All five players will likely be pl
  2. Through 10 games Cameron Artis-Payne has 1,276-yards rushing, averaging 5.59 yards per rush. Through the same number of games last season, Tre Mason had 1,038-yards on 5.73 yards per attempt. CAP has 22 plays of 15-yards or more this season compared to Mason's 13 through the same number of games. Against the Georgia Bulldogs Cameron Artis-Payne was held to just 86-yards rushing, though the senior RB had a 28-yard run called back on a holding penalty. CAP has been the most consistent performer on offense this season and currently leads the conference in rushing with two games remaining in the r
  3. Three keys for the Auburn offense vs. Ole Miss will be the ability to run inside the tackles, score touchdowns inside the red zone and to take care of the football. The Rebel defense is built on speed, which should make it challenging to run outside on Ole Miss. LSU found their primary run-success, running between their tackles. Auburn's offensive line will need to play one of their more physical games of the season to establish their running game. When the Tigers transition into the red zone, they must score touchdowns rather than settling for field goals like they did against Mississippi Sta
  4. One of the recent myths heard over and over the past two Auburn games is that Auburn is running into 8-9 men in the box the majority of the time. The majority of Auburn's offensive sets have a 3-WR look which means the most defenders the defense can place in the box before the snap is 8. In reality, Auburn is facing no more than 7 in the box the majority of the time. Go back to the 2010 season and the Iron Bowl. Gary Danielson made a comment about how Alabama elected to play Auburn's inside QB power play. He pointed out how LSU waited in their lanes, allowing Auburn to move towards them. Alab
  5. Corey Grant has become more of an intricate part of the offense this season and he is making the most of his opportunity. Of course this has always been the case for Grant, who has proven to be dedicated on and off the field. Though he has only 95 career carries, Grant has made the most of them, averaging a whopping 8.97 yards per rush. This includes an average of 9.57 yards per carry in Gus Malzahn's offense. Of his 95 career rush attempts, 38.9% have resulted in a first down and 31.6% have been gains of 10-yards or more. This season he has proven to be a solid performer running between the t
  6. One of my favorite plays from the Arkansas game was Auburn's delay draw or what I refer to as a slip-draw. Like many plays Gus Malzahn and Rhett Lashlee call, it is designed to freeze the defense, utilizing misdirection. The exchange or hand off takes place on one side of the backfield but the play normally funnels in the opposite direction. The play... On this down, Auburn faces a 2nd & 3 from the Razorback 15-yard line. Auburn will execute their version of the draw play, featuring Cameron Artis-Payne. Note in frame #2, at the time of the exchange, there are 5 defenders on that side o
  7. Auburn's offensive line has not received the attention they deserve through the media but opposing coaches have certainly taken notice. You don't lead the nation in rushing from a BCS conference without having solid OL play. Coach J.B. Grimes has done a stellar job, focusing on the details and mechanics of his pupils. It started in the conditioning program and took shape once actual practice began. Raising the performance level of each individual player set the foundation for a "unit" that has improved as the season progressed. Auburn has been fortunate to avoid any major injuries up front, wh
  8. If Auburn is going to capture their second BCS National Championship, it will require the type of offensive production the Tigers had against Missouri in the SECCG. Tre Mason set conference records with 304-yards rushing and 46 attempts against Mizzu. The Associated Press SEC Offensive Player of the Year will be a key component, when Auburn clashes with the Seminoles. Tre Mason will enter the National Championship Game as the leading rusher in the Southeastern Conference and first-team All-SEC. On this play Auburn faces a 1st & 10 from their own 21-yard line. Auburn runs their buck-swee
  9. Last season during 12 games, the Auburn offense produced 64 run-plays of 10-yards or more. This season through 11 games, the Auburn offense has totaled 112 such run-plays. The combination of an improved OL, execution and play-calling has resulted in a massive overhaul to the offense. One area Auburn must exploit against the Alabama defense is running the ball on first-down. The Auburn offense is currently No. 2 nationally averaging 6.87 yards per rush on first-down. The Alabama defense is currently No. 52 nationally, allowing 4.27 yards per rush on first-down. On this play Auburn has a 1st
  10. The obvious key to the success of the Auburn running game is the offensive line, which has been one of the best in the country. The Tigers will play host to the Georgia Bulldogs with the No. 3 rushing attack in the country ignited with the dynamic play of Nick Marshall and his RB's. Through 10 games the Auburn offense has produced the 2nd most 10-yard plus runs in the nation, which all comes back to a very physical OL that has taken pride in pushing the offense down the field. During the last 3 games, Auburn has run the football 82.3% of the time, leaning heavily on the OL. On this play Aub
  11. One apparent advantage Auburn has coming into the Georgia game is Red Zone offense vs. Georgia's Red Zone defense. The Tigers are currently No. 14 nationally in scoring touchdowns inside the red zone and the Georgia defense is No. 101 in allowing red zone touchdowns. Auburn is No. 28 nationally in offensive red zone appearances and the Bulldogs are No. 53 in permitting red zone appearances. On the average, Auburn has 4 red zone appearances per game, which means they must take advantage of these scoring opportunities when they surface against the Bulldogs. On this play Auburn faces and 2nd &
  12. Being the No. 5 run-offense in the nation requires a very good OL and quality RB's. Auburn possesses both along with athletic quarterbacks in Nick Marshall and Jeremy Johnson. Having a quarterback with the ability to make plays with his feet places additional pressure on opposing defenses because they have to adjust with an extra runner on the field. Even in an empty backfield set, the defense must account for Nick Marshall or pay the price if they fail to do so. On this play Auburn has the ball at their own 38-yard line, facing a 2nd & 8. The Tigers come out in a 4-WR look with Tre Mas
  13. Tre Mason has become Auburn's featured RB as the season has progressed. Through 7 games, Mason has rushed for 693-yards, garnering 55.1% of the carries among Mason, Grant and Artis Payne. He now has 9 career games with at least 15 carries, averaging 105.7 yards per game on 5.06 yards per rush. On this play Auburn faces a 3rd & 1 from their own 40-yard line. The Tigers will run their zone-read play with Nick Marshall having to read the OLB. At the snap Avery Young drives the DE outside as Chad Slade buries the DT inside. This leaves the OLB having to play the Marshall & Mason option.
  14. Auburn enters game #7 with the No. 7 run-offense nationally vs. the No. 104 run-defense (Texas A&M). No matter who starts at quarterback for Auburn, the Tigers must obtain the most of their running game this coming Saturday. In terms of churning out 10+ yard runs, Auburn is No. 7 nationally and the Aggie defense is 114th in allowing them. Gus Malzahn is 36-6, when his run offense has at least 45 carries, averaging 37.4 PPG, when doing so. On this play Auburn has the ball at the Catamount 20-yard line and they will run a sweep to the left behind two pulling guards. This has always been a
  15. One of the reasons why Auburn had success running the football against LSU was Auburn's ability to spread LSU out with their 4-WR set. By going to a 4-WR set, LSU could commit no more than 7 in the box to defend the run and often only had 6. Once Auburn was able to open up their passing game, LSU had to respect the Tigers ability to hurt LSU throwing the football. Having an athletic quarterback in the backfield means Auburn is in a 2-back set despite having only 1 RB in the backfield. The opposing team must account for Marshall in the running game, which now turns the "numbers" advantage in Au
  16. One of the aspects of Gus Malzahn's offense I was hoping to see upon his return in 2013 was the natural evolution of his offense. He is not the same coach he was when he broke into the collegiate ranks back in 2006. Over time he had to learn to adjust his offense to what would work at this level. Having broke down many of his offensive plays since 2009, I have already noticed new plays and formations this season he did not utilize from 2009-2011. As creative and dynamic as his offense has been, it's good to know he is always searching for something new to add to his playbook. On this play A
  17. Tre Mason enters the Mississippi State game with 228 career carries of which 45 have been of 10-yards or more and 9 of 20-yards or more. Mason is a dynamic runner with a quick burst, great vision and good speed. He is a natural runner with great instincts and is decisive, when maneuvering. He recently spoke of Auburn's SEC opener against Mississippi State. “I am really looking forward to playing Mississippi State with it being a conference game,” junior running back Tre Mason said. “It’s a big game for us. Big-time players have to make big-time plays in big games so that is what I am looking f
  18. Coming into the NMSU game, Auburn had converted 77 percent of their plays with 2-yards needed to convert. Against the Aggies, Auburn was 7 of 8 (87.5 percent) on their short yardage run plays. After a slow start on offense, Auburn's offensive line dominated the remainder of the game gaining 311-yards rushing on 45 carries. The Tigers finished the game averaging 15.6 yards per rush on their 8 short-yardage situations, led by running back Tre Mason. The play... On this play Auburn faces a 2nd & 4 from the Aggie 6 yard line, coming out in an I-formation set. At the snap, Tre Mason takes t
  19. With the loss of Philip Lutzenkirchen, Auburn has become more reliant upon CJ Uzomah and Brandon Fulse. At 6-4, 250 CJ Uzomah has become the primary target at the TE position, when it comes to the pass-offense. Auburn quarterbacks have thrown to him 7 times in the last 2 games and Uzomah has caught 5 for 113-yards, including his first touchdown reception as an Auburn Tiger. The TD reception... On this play Auburn has the ball at the TAMU 27-yard line facing a 2nd & 7. Before the snap Onterio McCalebb who is lined up wide right like a receiver will motion back into the backfield on a "s
  20. In what was perhaps one of the worst games in school history, freshman quarterback Jonathan Wallace brought a ray of sunshine during the game as he saw his most significant action this season against Texas A&M. Scot Loeffler was finally allowed to cut the freshman loose and he responded with explosive play. Wallace finished the game with 122-yards passing on just 9 pass attempts for 2 TD's. He added an additional 70-yards rushing on 13 carries playing basically one half of football. The run... We had already seen what Jonathan Wallace brought to the game, operating within the wildcat p
  21. On what might be the worst Auburn offense during the modern era of college football, Tre Mason has been one of the few bright spots this season. According to his position coach (Curtis Luper), Mason has worked very hard to be where he is at this point of his career. Though the offense has not given the fans much to celebrate, Tre Mason has shown flashes of greatness resulting in most fans wanting to see more of the sophomore running back. Through 7 games, Mason has accounted for 55.4 percent of Auburn's rushing totals, the 5th highest percentage by an Auburn player over the past 52 seasons. T
  22. In an attempt to help establish the running game, Auburn utilized more of the wildcat package, which aided on 2 of Auburn's 4 scoring drives against Ole Miss. If this portion of the offense is to remain effective, Scot Loeffler will need to expand Jonathan Wallace's role in the offense. The give... On this particular wildcat set, Jonathan Wallace will give the ball to Onterio McCalebb with John Sullen pulling from left to right. The DE and LB both play the inside keep, which opens up the outside running lane for McCalebb. The key is the few seconds Wallace rides McCalebb before handing off
  23. With Gene Chizik's recent comments about offensive identity, there is a strong possibility we will see a renewed focus on running the football against Ole Miss this coming Saturday. A strong output in this area would aid whomever Auburn starts at quarterback. The primary run play this season has been the stretch play, where all 3 running backs have had great success. Here is a breakdown of this play with Mike Blakely as the featured back. The play... On this particular occasion Auburn faces a 2nd & 1 from the Arkansas 37-yard line. Auburn comes out in a variation of the Ace Formation wit
  24. Through 4 games into the 2012 season the Auburn offense is still searching for their identity on offense. The pass-offense is still attempting to become more consistent and the coaches have been incorporating a steady mixture of different players at the skill positions. The running game has primarily come from Onterio McCalebb and Tre Mason with Mike Blakely sprinkled in the lineup. Tre Mason currently leads the team with 275-yards rushing on 53 attempts. IMO, Tre Mason has performed well enough to garner more carries during the game. Until the pass-offense becomes more consistent Mason could
  25. Another play Auburn attempted to burn the aggressive LSU defense with was the counter play from the zone-read look. Auburn executed the play with Jonathan Wallace in at quarterback. The play was successful with Onterio McCalebb and Tre Mason carrying the football. The play... On this play Auburn faces a 2nd & 7 from their own 34-yard line. At the snap, Jonathan Wallace hands off to Onterio McCalebb, who takes a step to his right, cutting back to the left. Chad Slade and Brandon Fulse pull from right to left to help open up a running lane for McCalebb. The play results in a 23-yard gain
