  1. Cameron Artis-Payne recorded his longest run of the season against Western Carolina, while racking up his 2nd 100-yard effort this season. Despite having only 54 carries on the season, CAP is on pace for an 800-yard plus season with a current average of 7.2 yards per rush. This week's game plan will likely be run-heavy, which means Cameron Artis-Payne could see extensive action against the Aggies. On this play Auburn faces a 2nd & 8 from their own 16-yard line with the Catamounts running a run-blitz against the Tiger offense. At the snap Jonathan Wallace makes an inside hand off to Came
  2. Something Auburn might need of Nick Marshall this week down in Baton Rouge is his ability to pick up extra first downs with his feet. Last season Jonathan Wallace and Kiehl Frazier combined for 10 first downs rushing the football. Nick Marshall through 3 games already has 7. Last week against Mississippi State, Marshall picked up 2 first downs on the game-winning drive by rushing for them. Over the past 25 seasons an Auburn first down has been worth 1.4 points. This season it's worth 1.5 points through 3 games. Marshall clearly has the ability to extend drives with his athletic ability and Aub
  3. If the Auburn pass-offense is to improve in 2013, look for Sammie Coates to have a major role, especially when it comes to stretching opposing defenses vertically. The key for Coates and the other Auburn wide-receivers is consistency. Can they make plays consistently or just randomly? The Auburn pass-offense was accustomed to having a consistent performer at wide-receiver with Darvin Adams and Emory Blake the last 4 seasons. This season, Gus Malzhan is looking for several receivers to step up, including Sammie Coates. The play... On this play the Auburn offense faces a 3rd & 10, coming
  4. In most cases, a play call often goes awry not because of schemes or poor judgment but because of poor execution. It only takes one player to blow his assignment for a play to go wrong. This was the case during the delay sideline route from Jonathan Wallace to Ricardo Louis. The play... On this play the Auburn offense faces a 3rd & 6 from their own 49-yard line. Auburn will attempt a delayed sideline route to Ricardo Louis after faking a screen pass to him. At the snap, Louis is lined up in the slot on the wide side of the field. Jonathan Wallace will fake the screen to Louis, who dra
  5. Kiehl Frazier finished the A-Day game with a QB rating of 148.7 and Jonathan Wallace checked in at 148.6. A closer look at both quarterbacks reveals Wallace had the better game, when it counted. On 3rd down, Wallace converted 5 of 9 third down situations (55.6%), throwing the football, while Frazier converted 2 of 7 (28.6%). With Wallace primarily facing the No. 1 defense, his conversion rate really stands out in comparison. Wallace attempted 26 passes, generating 5 plays of 15-yards or more and Frazier had 2 of 16 attempts. In terms of generating impact plays, Wallace had the better ratio. T
  6. Often a good offensive play is set up by the series of plays previously executed. This was the case, when C.J. Uzomah hauled in a 20-yard pass play from Jonathan Wallace, which set up an eventual touchdown during the 2013 A-Day Game. The play... On this play the Auburn offense comes out in their base 3-WR set. Ricardo Louis and C.J. Uzomah are split out on the wide side of the field with Uzomah in the slot position. Just before the snap, Louis motions to his left and will stack up behind Uzomah. One of the keys to success was the 4 previous pass attempts to Louis before this play, where Lo
  7. Of the 43 passes attempted during the 2013 A-Day Game, more than half were screen passes. Gus Malzahn believes in peppering the opposing defense with WR-screens to stretch the defense sideline to sideline. It also sets up his vertical passing game, especially with delayed routes run off of a "screen" look. The Auburn offense cashed this play into two TD passes, both thrown by quarterback Jonathan Wallace. The play... The above play was initially set up with a series of WR-screen passes executed prior to this snap. During the previous screens, a TE is set up in the slot to be the lead block
  8. * Over the past 20 seasons Auburn has averaged 19.2 first downs per game on offense. * Last season Auburn averaged 15.5 first downs per game, the second lowest average during the past 20 seasons. * Over the past 20 seasons of Auburn football, an offensive first down has translated to 1.4 points. * Last season an Auburn first down = 1.2 pts. * The 2010 Auburn offense averaged 24.6 first downs per game, which was No. 10 nationally and the highest average by an Auburn offense over the past 20 seasons. Cameron Newton was responsible for 91 first downs running the football, which was basically
  9. Inside the Numbers: Tre Mason had a career high 181-yards rushing on just 12 carries, including a career run of 86-yards for a TD. Mason now has 920-yards rushing on the season. Onterio McCalebb began his Auburn career with a 100-yard rushing effort and finishes his career at home with over 100-yards rushing. Currently the RB combination of Tre Mason and Onterio McCalebb is averaging 6.20 yards per rush. This is the 7th best rushing average by a combination of 2 running backs since 1970. Jonathan Wallace was only 10 of 18 in passing but 11 of his pass attempts were intermediate
  10. During the second half there were a few times Scot Loeffler went no huddle with an up tempo. On Auburn's second possession of the second half, the Tigers went no huddle once they reached midfield. Auburn managed to march 63-yards on 6 plays before Emory Blake was stripped of the football inside the Georgia 10-yard line. Loeffler utilized a base formation of 2-WR's, TE, RB and FB during the drive. Once they went no huddle the offense would come to the line but audible accordingly to the Bulldog secondary. Square-In... On this play Auburn has the ball at their own 43-yard line facing a 1st &
  11. One of the most notable improvements in the Auburn pass-offense since Jonathan Wallace has become the starter is his willingness to target receivers down field first. With Kiehl Frazier at quarterback, he averaged a pass play of 15-yards or more every 5.7 pass attempts. Clint Moseley's ratio dropped Auburn to 1 every 7.5 attempts. Jonathan Wallace currently has a ratio of 1 every 3.0 attempts. Since 1992 Auburn has averaged a pass play of 15-yards or more every 5.5 attempts. The best ratio from 1992-2012 was 1 every 4.2 attempts during the 2010 season. The play... On this play Auburn faces
  12. One play Auburn struggled with earlier in the season was the RB screen, which Auburn failed to complete. Against Georgia, the RB's were utilized more than normal in the passing game, including a screen-pass to Onterio McCalebb, which netted 34-yards. Screen passes are a great way of neutralizing an aggressive pass-rush and Auburn was able to burn the Georgia defense with the second quarter pass to McCalebb. Onterio McCalebb has proven to be a dangerous player in space, especially in the passing game. The play... On this play Auburn faces a 2nd & 10 from their own 25-yard line. Before t
  13. Of the many freshman players seeing action this season Ricardo Louis will be one of several to keep an eye on as his career develops. At 6-2, 210 Louis has the speed, size and strength to be an explosive player on offense for the Auburn Tigers. As a wide receiver, Louis has only been targeted 4 times this season but he has 3 receptions for 36-yards. Look for his role in the Auburn offense to expand over the last 3 remaining games. The play... On this play Auburn has the ball at their own 35-yard line with a 1st & 10. Auburn shows a 4-WR look with "trips" to the right of the formation.
  14. One of the better plays called and executed against New Mexico State was the sit-down route to Trovon Reed, which resulted in a touchdown during the 4th quarter. Watching the play live I initially thought the play was a shallow crossing route to Trovon Reed isolated on a LB. Upon reviewing the play, I discovered Auburn bated the LB into believing the play was a stick route but the play involved a continuation or an extension route. This forced the LB in coverage out of position, resulting in an Auburn touchdown. The play... On this play Auburn has the ball at the Aggie 40-yard line, facing
  15. If Auburn has any chance of making the Georgia game competitive Auburn must produce big plays on offense. Over the last 25 years, 67 percent of Auburn's plays of 30-yards or more have come through the passing game, which means true freshman Jonathan Wallace will be a focal point on offense Saturday night. Through 26 pass attempts, 57.7 percent of the pass attempts made by Wallace have been vertical passes far greater than Frazier and Moseley. If Wallace is forced to throw the football more than 30 times against the Bulldogs, it will likely spell trouble for the Tigers. What Auburn needs this w
  16. Coming into the NMSU game, Auburn had converted 77 percent of their plays with 2-yards needed to convert. Against the Aggies, Auburn was 7 of 8 (87.5 percent) on their short yardage run plays. After a slow start on offense, Auburn's offensive line dominated the remainder of the game gaining 311-yards rushing on 45 carries. The Tigers finished the game averaging 15.6 yards per rush on their 8 short-yardage situations, led by running back Tre Mason. The play... On this play Auburn faces a 2nd & 4 from the Aggie 6 yard line, coming out in an I-formation set. At the snap, Tre Mason takes t
  17. One of the elements I looked forward to seeing in Scot Loeffler's offense was the range of motioning and shifting to create the most desired match ups with the opposing defense. The offensive movement before the snap will often expose what the opposing defense is attempting to do in their secondary, giving the quarterback an edge to where he will throw the football. It also creates opportunities for the WR's by matching them up with LB's and safeties in coverage. Setting up Emory Blake... On this play Auburn faces a 2nd & 12 from the Aggie 36-yard line. 18. For the first time this season, football was finally fun for the Auburn players recording only their second victory of the season. Their previous victory against ULM went down to the wire after the Tigers blew a 28-14 third quarter lead. After a slow start against New Mexico State, Scot Loeffler went back to what Auburn has done best this season, running the football. The Tigers finished the game with a season high, 311-yards rushing on only 45 carries. Tre Mason and Onterio McCalebb both racked up over 100-yards rushing as Auburn became the more physical team as the game progressed. Garner
  19. One of the primary reasons for Emory Blake's success as a wide receiver at Auburn has been his precision routes he executes game after game. For the last 3 years, Blake has been a consistent performer for the Auburn Tigers with a keen ability to find the soft spots in zone coverage. Against Texas A&M, Blake hauled in 5 receptions against the Aggies for 106-yards and a touchdown. The following play is a great example of his route running ability, which allowed him to separate from double coverage. The play... On this play Auburn faces a 1st & 10 from their own 38-yard line. 20. One of the elements I looked forward to seeing in Scot Loeffler's offense was the range of motioning and shifting to create the most desired match ups with the opposing defense. 21. It was the worst first quarter of Auburn football that I have witnessed in the 35-years I have followed Auburn football. It then transformed into the worst first half of Auburn football and eventually the worst defensive performance I have ever seen by an Auburn defense. The only highlight of the evening was watching a true freshman quarterback play his heart out, giving a lifeless Auburn offense a much needed spark. I enjoyed watching Mr. Wallace play so much, I wanted the Aggies to score as quickly as possible just so I could see what Wallace had up his sleeve on the next offensive possessi
  22. With the loss of Philip Lutzenkirchen, Auburn has become more reliant upon CJ Uzomah and Brandon Fulse. At 6-4, 250 CJ Uzomah has become the primary target at the TE position, when it comes to the pass-offense. Auburn quarterbacks have thrown to him 7 times in the last 2 games and Uzomah has caught 5 for 113-yards, including his first touchdown reception as an Auburn Tiger. The TD reception... On this play Auburn has the ball at the TAMU 27-yard line facing a 2nd & 7. Before the snap Onterio McCalebb who is lined up wide right like a receiver will motion back into the backfield on a "s
  23. In what was perhaps one of the worst games in school history, freshman quarterback Jonathan Wallace brought a ray of sunshine during the game as he saw his most significant action this season against Texas A&M. Scot Loeffler was finally allowed to cut the freshman loose and he responded with explosive play. Wallace finished the game with 122-yards passing on just 9 pass attempts for 2 TD's. He added an additional 70-yards rushing on 13 carries playing basically one half of football. The run... We had already seen what Jonathan Wallace brought to the game, operating within the wildcat p
  24. In an attempt to help establish the running game, Auburn utilized more of the wildcat package, which aided on 2 of Auburn's 4 scoring drives against Ole Miss. If this portion of the offense is to remain effective, Scot Loeffler will need to expand Jonathan Wallace's role in the offense. The give... On this particular wildcat set, Jonathan Wallace will give the ball to Onterio McCalebb with John Sullen pulling from left to right. The DE and LB both play the inside keep, which opens up the outside running lane for McCalebb. The key is the few seconds Wallace rides McCalebb before handing off
