  1. Corey Grant joined some elite company against Washington State, becoming only the 6th Auburn RB since 1992 to register at least 4 run plays of 15-yards or more during the same game. James Bostic did it during 1992 & 1993, Stephen Davis during 1995, Rudi Johnson during 2000, Ronnie Brown in 2002 and Michael Dyer during 2010. On this play Auburn has the ball 1st & 10 from their own 37-yard line. In a 3-WR set, Auburn will execute their zone-read play with Nick Marshall and Corey Grant. Marshall rides Grant out until the last possible second, getting the DE to crash down. Once Corey G
  2. One of the frequent plays seen in Gus Malzahn's offense is the power sweep, similar to the version made famous by Vince Lombardi's Green Bay Packers. It has been a very successful play in the Malzahn playbook with Ben Tate and Michael Dyer recording numerous long TD runs during their Auburn careers. Cameron Artis-Payne benefited from the same play during the 2013 A-Day game, scoring on a 27-yard run. The play... Malzahn has a couple of variations of this play but they all involve both guards pulling on the play and this was the case during the A-Day game. Auburn comes out in a 3-WR set but
  3. In theory Auburn's recruiting classes from 2009-2012 should be an intricate part of the 2013 roster with leadership and experience provided by the recruiting classes from 2009 and 2010. On paper Auburn's last 4 recruiting classes finished in the nation's top-20 and 3 classes finished in the top-10 according to Scout.com. With an average recruiting ranking of No. 8 nationally, Auburn's 2013 roster should be loaded for Gus Malzahn's first season. A closer examination of Auburn's last 4 recruiting classes will expose the reality of attrition and why you never know what you truly have until the pl
  4. Defense: Despite injuries to Dee Ford, LaDarius Owens and Justin Delaine, Auburn’s defensive ends finished the season with 35 quarterback hurries. Playing 1 less game than the 2010 defense along with depleted depth, the 2011 defensive ends had more quarterback hurries than the 2010 Auburn defensive ends. Auburn is loaded with talent and experience at the defensive end position, which could translate to a very productive unit in 2012. The return of a healthy Dee Ford matched up with Corey Lemonier could be something very special. If the defensive tackles can obtain a more consistent push insid
  5. Based on recruit ratings from Prep Star (2000-2001) and Scout.com (2002-2010), there have been 74 RB's rated as 4-stars or better that signed and qualified with SEC schools. I sorted this list of 74 backs, eliminating those backs with less than 20 career games. I then sorted the remaining backs, comiling a top-20 list based on total offensive yards per game during their careers. Here is the top 20: Marcus Lattimore (USC) .............. 130.5 YPG Darren McFadden (Ark) ............... 130.4 Knowshon Moreno (UGA) ............. 130.0 Trent Richardson (Ala) ................. 101.6 Carnell Wil
  6. With the loss of Michael Dyer, Auburn relied on Tre Mason and Kiehl Frazier to do the dirty work between the tackles. Mason and Frazier combined for 119-yards and 3 TD's on 25 carries against the Virginia Cavaliers. Mason had a season high, 64-yards rushing on just 9 carries, which included a 22-yard TD run to give Auburn a 35-17 lead early in the 3rd period. The play... On this play, Trovon Reed will come in motion on the jet-sweep option, which forces the defense to honor the outside run option before committing to the inside give to Mason. Reed's motion to the right of the formation pul
  7. With Michael Dyer suspended from the team, Onterio McCalebb could become the featured running back against Virginia in the Chick-fil-A Bowl. The junior RB is just 93-yards short of 200 career rushing yards. If McCalebb were to reach the 2000-yard mark, he would become the 14th player in school history to do so and would have the second best yards per rush (6.3) among the other 13 backs. Not bad for a young man that has never been the featured RB n Auburn's offense. Through 37 games, Onterio McCalebb has 3161 all-purpose yards as an Auburn Tiger. During his first 2 seasons, McCalebb caught
  8. If Auburn had any chance of winning the 2011 Iron Bowl, Alabama had to be held to under 20 points and the Tigers would have to find creative ways to score. As it turned out, Auburn managed to score a touchdown on defense and one on special teams but the Tiger defense gave up 226-yards and 24 points by halftime, while Auburn totaled 31-yards and zero points on offense. This has basically been the theme this year against the quality opponents, where Auburn lost any form of consistency on either side of the football. Auburn has been dominated up front in all 4 big games this season, which was con
  9. We have seen more 2-back sets this season with the combination of Michael Dyer and Onterio McCalebb. It was needed to make up for the loss of Cameron Newton. Dyer is now the inside threat and McCalebb is the outside threat. The play... Though Alabama will likely make it rough for Dyer between the tackles, Auburn must be committed to the inside run options to keep the threat of the outside game alive. Auburn's cross-buck action with the RB's has been successful this season, forcing the opposing defense to honor both options in the running game. Because Auburn runs between the tackles 61 per
  10. Here is another play that I can see working against the Alabama defense. If Gus Malzahn elects to put the QB under center more than normal, I would expect to see this play. The play... The focus will likely be on Michael Dyer and would be set up with several runs by Dyer before Tre Mason or a WR was handed the ball on a speed sweep. I would rather see Mason because he has shown the ability to turn the ball up field very quickly. We saw Travante Stallworth line up as the motion man against Samford, so there is another option of a pass to the motion man, once he clears the backfield. Here a
  11. Auburn ran more formations with the quarterback under center against Samford than we have seen all season long. It was an attempt to bolster the running game by putting a TE on the line and a FB or second TE in the backfield as a lead blocker. Gus Malzahn ran Michael Dyer multiple times from this formation, setting up a pass to Philip Lutzenkirchen. The play... On this play, Auburn faces a 2nd & 9 from the Samford 36-yard line. The Tigers come out in an offset "I" formation with Lutz adjacent to the RT and Ladarious Phillips in the backfield as the FB. During the previous play, Auburn
  12. Coach Pat Dye was right when he stated Georgia was the third most physical team in the SEC. The way they played tonight, they could give LSU or Alabama a run for their money and they will get their shot in the SECCG. This game was identical to the LSU game as Auburn was simply dominated up front on both sides of the football. Auburn was beat in every phase of the game, including coaching. It’s difficult to make adjustments if the opponent is dominating the line of scrimmage, which was clearly the case against Georgia. Inside the Numbers: Auburn allowed 11 impact plays to the Georgia
  13. Last season, Auburn became the perfect storm, which swept through the Southeastern Conference on its way to a BCS national championship. Auburn took advantage of a veteran roster loaded with experience and two game-changing players at the quarterback position and defensive tackle position. Auburn was not a great team in terms of being loaded with a roster full of blue-chip athletes. For those who wish to diminish Auburn’s accomplishments in 2010 by stating it was all Cameron Newton, I challenge you to look back at other undefeated teams with a Heisman-caliber player on offense. No way Georgia
  14. Michael Dyer recorded his 5th long run of the season, scoring on a 55-yard touchdown run against the Arkansas Razorbacks. What made this long run unique from the previous 4 long runs was that it did not involve a pulling guard or lead blocker. Gus Malzahn took advantage of the boundary side by have a "trips" set to the wide side of the field. Overloading the boundary side was not necessary with Arkansas playing more personnel to the wide side of the field. The play... On this play, Auburn will run a counter play to the boundary side from a 4-WR set. With 3 WR's set to the wide side of the
  15. I previously noted Clint Moseley’s amazing 3rd down pass rating of 412.2 against Ole Miss. I failed to note it was the best 3rd down passing performance by any Auburn quarterback over the past 20 years. For the season, Moseley has compiled a pass rating of 205.2 on 3rd down. Over the past 20-years, Auburn has compiled a record of 67-8-0, when the Tigers have a pass rating of 150 or better on 3rd down, averaging 36.1 PPG. Auburn managed to score in every quarter against the Rebels, something the Tigers did against Utah State and Mississippi State. It snapped a three-game skid, w
  16. Auburn’s 41-23 victory over Ole Miss was no doubt Auburn’s best victory of the season with all three phases of the game coming away with a passing grade. The offense came out strong as the defense had major issues containing the Rebel running game, leading to a 17-17 tie at halftime. Just as Auburn did for the majority of last season, the Tiger defense made great adjustments at the half, holding the Ole Miss offense in check until the Rebels scored a later touchdown against Auburn’s reserves. The offense found more rhythm and consistency against Ole Miss than any other game, primarily because
  17. Percentage of 3rd downs of 7-yards or more: 2007: 41.8 percent 2008: 52.4 percent 2009: 47.5 percent 2010: 43.2 percent 2011: 57.5 percent Percentage of 3rd downs of 7-yards or more in the passing game: 2007: 51.9 percent 2008: 61.4 percent 2009: 58.8 percent 2010: 58.1 percent 2011: 69.1 percent It's difficult to sustain drives when put in a position of a low probability for success. The obvious assumption to be made is Auburn is not as productive on first down in 2011. Last season, Auburn averaged 6.85 yards per play on first down compared to 5.41 yards in 2011. Even at 5.41 yar
  18. Last Saturday against LSU, Michael Dyer was held to 60-yards rushing on 12 carries. After averaging 113.2 yards per game on 5.5 yards per rush during the first 6 games of the season, Dyer has been held to 66.5 yards per game on 3.8 yards per rush in his last two outings. Dyer no doubt, has been Auburn's most consistent player on offense and he is easily on pace for his second consecutive 1000-yard season. Here is a spotlight of his best two runs against LSU. Play No. 1 On this splay, Auburn faces a 1st &10 from the LSU 46-yard line. The key to the play will be Auburn's 4-WR set, which
  19. During the first 5 games of the game, the Auburn offense faced an average of 7.2 situations involving 2-yards to convert a first down or touchdown. In the last 2 games, they’ve had only 3 against Arkansas and 3 against Florida. Facing fewer short yardage situations is a strong indicator of poor production on first down. A forced-turnover by the Auburn defense has been worth 2.85 points. An Auburn offensive turnover has been worth 2.7 points for the opponent. Only 5 players were targeted in Auburn’s pass-offense vs. Florida from their 16 pass attempts. Jay Wisner was the most targe
  20. If Auburn's offensive philosophy is to continue towards a run-oriented attack, I believe it would be wise to involve Tre Mason as much as possible. Obviously, Michael Dyer and Onterio McCalebb should take the majority of carries at RB but Mason could provide a much needed substitute so that Dyer is not faced with another 35-40 carry outing. I believe this was part of the game plan for the Arkansas game but the way the game played out, Mason did not get the opportunities he would have under better conditions. Against Arkansas, Mason had 4 carries but 1 of the his runs was called back on a quest
  21. One of the benefits to Auburn's recent commitment to running between the tackles is Onterio McCalebb's success running outside. Over the past 3 games, Auburn has run primarily between the tackles with Michael Dyer and Kiehl Frazier punishing the interior of the opponent's defense. With this inside threat, Auburn's use of 2-backs and cross buck action have once again, opened the outside running lanes for McCalebb. The play... On this play, Auburn lines up with 3 backs in the backfield, including Philip Lutzenkirchen lined up in a FB role. Phillip Lutzenkirchen is initially lined up behind t
  22. In one of his featured columns, Coach Pat Dye wrote how execution is more important than schemes and play calling. A team can have the perfect play called at the perfect time but it only takes 1 of the 11 players to blow his assignment to squash the play. This was the case this past Saturday against South Carolina, when Auburn called a play-action pass from a run formation but poor execution voided out the play. The play... On this play, Auburn comes out in a bunch set with Barrett Trotter under center. The play will be a play-action pass with Travante Stallworth being the primary target.
  23. Of Michael Dyer's 41 carries, 34 came between the tackles as Auburn attacked the heart of the Gamecock's defense, neutralizing their speed. Auburn's offensive line remains a work in progress but when they are on, it can be a thing of beauty. On this play, Auburn must counter a run-blitz by South Carolina, which they were able to accomplish. The play... On this play, Ladarious Phillips must engage the OLB coming off the edge to the top of the formation. Jared Cooper pulls to his right, picking up the safety attacking through the "C" gap. Brandon Mosley engages the DE and John Sullen engages
  24. Last season, Auburn ran the football 77 percent of the time on first down. Through 2 games into the 2011 season, Auburn has run the football 69 percent of the time on first down, which should be beneficial for the offense down the road. The loss of Cameron Newton makes it vital for Auburn to be more consistent on first down. The play... On this play against Mississippi State, Auburn has a 1st & 10 from their own 41-yard line. Because Auburn's tendency is to run on first down, the MSU defense is focused on a run play from the start. Auburn's presnap formation is a formation the Tigers o
