Burnett blames Vols for 24-point defeat

By CHRIS LOW

Staff Writer

KNOXVILLE — Kevin Burnett, Tennessee's senior linebacker and team captain, was defiant in defeat last night.

He repeated several times that Auburn's 34-10 whipping of Tennessee was more the result of what the Vols didn't do than it was what the Tigers did.

''The best team out there today was Tennessee,'' Burnett said. ''We beat ourselves. The simple thing is that we made some mistakes, and it came back to bite us in the butt.''

The Vols made plenty of mistakes, all right. They turned it over six times — all six from freshman quarterbacks Erik Ainge and Brent Schaeffer. Ainge threw four interceptions and lost a fumble, while Schaeffer also threw an interception.

That said, the Tigers rolled up 333 yards of total offense by halftime and didn't punt until the opening minutes of the third quarter.

''It's not too hard to run an offense from 35 or 40 yards going in,'' Burnett said. ''We just made too many mistakes.''

Burnett didn't stop there, either.

He went on to say that the Vols stopped the Tigers all game and vowed, ''We'll see them again.''

The reference was to a possible rematch in the SEC Championship game, but that seemed like a million miles away last night after Auburn raced out to a 31-3 halftime lead and then essentially did its best to sit on the ball and run out the clock in the second half.

The Tigers burned the Vols all game with big plays. Three of their four touchdown drives were 50 yards or longer. Their fourth touchdown came after Ainge fumbled on Tennessee's 1.

Asked if Auburn deserved any credit, Burnett said, ''It was all us. We gave them the ball. When it came down to it (in the second half), we kept them out of the end zone.

''It was just too little, too late.''

As Burnett left the interview room, he looked across the room and repeated his earlier proclamation.

''Mark it down. We will see them again. I promise you that,'' he said.

The Vols were able to hold the Tigers and their running back tandem of Carnell Williams and Ronnie Brown to 148 yards rushing. Brown, though, hurt Tennessee out of the backfield catching the ball.

Williams and Brown each ran over Tennessee safety Jason Allen at the goal line for touchdowns, but he still didn't sound impressed.

''They're good backs,'' Allen said. ''I'm not going to say they're God's gifts to football.''

No kidding.

And I know the rules are that we can't talk smack about these players because they're kids and all, but DAMN.

Anyway, I do hope we see them again. The Dawgs looked mean.

Classless cry-baby. Where does this wide-spread rage against Auburn come from? If UF, UGA, Bama or any other upper tier SEC teams handed the Vols a whipping like that, they'd give credit where it is due. We see that delusional stuff all the time from teams AU hammers. Any psych majors out there?

I think the rage comes from 2 straight years of underdog Tigers knocking them out of the Top 10.

And whupping them physically both times they did it!

Jason Allen - how's that committment to UT treating you. If you had committed to AU, at least when you got bowled over by Ronnie and Carnell it would have been at practice - not in front of 100,000 UT faithful and a national TV audience!!!

But that's changing..oh, yes...

That's an easy one, man. Anger comes out of fear . They're afraid of us, and that makes them angry. Instead of embracing and admitting their fear, the resent it, and they resent us for "causing it."

[A personal note to Tennessee Volunteers everywhere]

Let it be a comfort to you to know that fear is a perfectly natural, normal emotion. Everyone experiences it sometime. And, in the end, you were right to be afraid of Auburn, because we just stomped you to death on national TV!!!!!!

Doesn't that make you feel better?

That'll be 100 bucks, please!
