His calm play against LSU and pinpoint accuracy against just about everyone else has made the new West Coast offense fly. He's completing 68% of his throws with a rating of 180.44, good for fourth in the nation. Defensive Player of the Midseason - Thomas Davis, FS Georgia David Pollack might get all the glory and Odell Thurman, now that he's back, might get all the pub over the second half of the season, but Davis has been the playmaker on the great Dawg D with 51 tackles over the first half of the year. Ainge has emerged as the better of the two (at least for now), and the Vols are right in the hunt for the SEC East title. No matter what happens the rest of the way, the experiment worked. Biggest Disappointment - Ole Miss Eli Manning might have been an elite talent, but the rest of the team played well around him last year. Early off-the-field problems and inconsistent quarterback play put the Rebels behind the eight-ball early. The SEC Champion will be... Auburn The Tigers will beat Tennessee ... again. Best Game of the First Half Tennessee 30 ... Florida 28 ... Sept. 18 In what might have been the best game in this great rivalry, Tennessee kicker James Wilhoit made amends for a missed extra point by nailing a controversial 50-yard field goal with six seconds to play. Wilhoit got better position thanks to a personal foul penalty on Florida's Dallas Baker who retaliated on a push and slap. In the see-saw battle, Florida's Chris Leak threw three touchdown passes including an 81-yard touchdown to Chad Jackson for a 28-21 lead late. Tennessee roared back as Jayson Swain caught a 13-yard touchdown pass bullying his way into the end zone, but Wilhoit missed the extra point. UT QB Erik Ainge threw two fourth quarter touchdown passes. Second Best Game - Auburn 10 ... LSU 9, Sept. 18 Third Best Game - LSU 24 ... Florida 21, Oct. 9 Worst Game of the First Half LSU 51 ... Mississippi State 0 ... Sept. 25 LSU dominated from start to finish as Alley Broussard scored the first three touchdowns of the game and JaMarcus Russell ran for a score and threw for another. The defense got into the act forcing five turnovers with Marcus Spears returning an interception for a touchdown. MSU only managed 130 yards of total offense and seven first downs Coach of the Midseason - Al Borges, offensive coordinator Auburn This summer, the message boards were lit up like Christmas trees with Auburn fans worried about the new West Coast offense. Will the focus be off Cadillac and Ronnie? Can Jason Campbell really be a consistent passer? No one's complaining now. Player who'll step up in the second half - Ken Darby, RB Alabama With RB Ray Hudson and QB Brodie Croyle out for the year, it'll be up to Darby to carry the Tide offense. He tore off 296 yards and three touchdowns against Kentucky and Southern Miss and will continue to be fed the ball over and over and over again. Best performance so far - Auburn QB Jason Campbell completed 17 of 19 passes for 297 yards and three touchdowns in the 38-30 win over Arkansas. Top Freshman - Erik Ainge, QB Tennessee Get used to Ainge being one of college football's biggest stars over the next three-plus years. The young Tennessee receiving corps is on the verge of exploding. Coach who needs to have a big second half - Rich Brooks, Kentucky and Ron Zook, Florida The hiring of Rich Brooks was a bit questionable, and the program hasn't exactly taken off under his reign. Winning games over good teams might be a lot to ask of a team that hasn't done much of anything this year, so there needs to be a few positive steps to show the Wildcat fans that next year will be a good one. As far as Ron Zook, one word: visor. Player who needs to have a big second half - Chad Jackson, O.J. Small and the rest of the Florida receiving corps. Florida doesn't control its own SEC fate, but it has a shot at the East title by winning out and hoping for a Tennessee slip. With Georgia, South Carolina and Florida State ahead, this is a key time for the Ron Zook era as a run of the table would do wonders to calm down the Gator nation. If the receiving corps starts to shine and make more big plays against good teams, the Gator offense will be the SEC's most unstoppable. Best remaining conference game - Georgia at Auburn, Nov. 13 It's one of the SEC's greatest road teams vs. a team on a national title run. A win by the Tigers would prove to the whole college football world that they're worth of Orange Bowl consideration.
