I vote for Chris Petersen from Boise State. I know his name has kind of cooled this year, but his career record is 80-7. He knows offense and every year he's had Boise beating big time schools. He is 7-2 against schools from the Big Six conferences. I don't care who you are playing against, winning 92% of the time is strong. He made Kellen Moore into an All-American at Boise. Imagine what he could do with Wallace or Jeremy Johnson!

They've also had good running backs such as Doug Martin who went in the first round of the draft, and DJ Harper who will get drafted this year. Tre Mason and Mike Blakely would eat in his offense. Receivers like Titus Young and Austin Pettis have made the NFL. Quan Bray, Sammie Coates, Ricardo Louis would go crazy. In a couple of years we will have an experienced O-line. If he can somehow hold on to the defensive guys we have and go out and get an elite DC, we could be back on top very soon.

For the record, I am anti-Petrino. I would rather take a chance and see if Petersen can get it done. He seems to be a good guy and a pretty good recruiter out there in Idaho. If he can get guys with NFL talent to come play at Boise, then I think he can do it here. He'll need to bring in some guys used to recruiting this region, but he'll get it done. He's getting paid 1.7 million this year. Throw 3 million at him and see if he bites.

Peterson isn't leaving Boise. So absent him, whatcha got?

Why is everyone so sure Petersen won't leave Boise? I know he's had offers in the past and hasn't left yet, but please fill me in to why you don't think it's worth a shot?

I don't understand how anyone could say Jimbo hasn't done anything with FSU...have yall been watching football for the last 10 years?

I think many people have an inflated view of how rich and powerful Florida State really is. Jimbo had a rebuilding job to do at FSU and while he has lost to some teams he shouldn't have (what coach hasn't?), hes brought in great recruiting, energized a small, lethargic fanbase, and has consistently won at a level that Bowden was unable to do in his last 5 years at FSU. b

No crap...everyone wants a coach with a perfect record I guess. That's just ignorant. Jimbo has done a lot with FSU...Bobby Bowden wore them out and it wasn't until Jimbo came along that it started to come alive again, some of you ppl don't know ur butt from a whole in the ground...geez.

Not to mention the guy has integrity, instills discipline, and has fire in him.

Jimbo Fisher

I don't see anyway Jimbo Fisher leaves FSU.

I just see Fisher and Strong as not that great. Solid, but not quite at that upper level.

I agree on Fischer-he's done nothing with FSU and they have all the resources AU has. Strong on the other hand has turned around a program that was slumping bad, much like AU. He has experience in the SEC and is a very good recruiter. He would also make it hard for Afro-Am. athletes in Alabama to go play for saban, (much like adorable Stacy Dash caught flack for backing Romney)

U were doing good until that last sentence...

You don't find Stacy Dash adorable? :dunno: Or you want to put your head in the sand and pretend that stuff like that doesn't happen in real life.

Stacy Dash is more than adorable, she's damn hot.

However, thinking a black head coach is going to de facto make Auburn the preferred school over Alabama for black players is ridiculous.

Precisely my friend

You can call him, but I'm just saying he is very happy there.and his son has some medical issues that the doctors in Boise are very good at treating. It's an extreme long shot at best. So with him out of the way, what do you have next?

FSU has far better talent is the marquee school in their league, and FSU has not won a league title since Fisher has been there ...losing to NC State this year was unacceptable with that team he had....these are just facts, I just don't see him as a championship level coach....

Another concern of mine with Petersen is Boise State's track record with coaches who have moved on to other schools. It's weird, but it seems to be too much of a trend. Koetter, Nutt, and Hawkins all ended up being fired from their next jobs. Almost every one of those after a very poor tenure- Nutt is the only one you could argue rose above "poor" status.

Greg Schiano I heard was a possible candidate. He would be a great hire.

If you want to win now and give Nicky nightmares, hold your nose and go after Pete Carroll.

That is my vote!!!!!! Give me Pete Carroll!!!!!!!!!!!

He's been there about three years now, right? Bowden really had that place in a mess before he left. That team just looked inferior the last few years. He's done well to raise their standards to where they are.

Not even three years. He's in his third season now.

People are basically condemning they guy for not winning championships in his first 2 years a new school. For all its superior talent, FSU had only won 1 league title in the six seasons prior to Jimbo getting there.

Jimbo is a good safe hire that could unite the Auburn Family.

I'll agree with this. I had classes with his wife while at Auburn. She is from Piedmont and is a classy lady. Jimbo has done a great job recruiting as a head coach and I like having an offensive mine as the next HC.

They fell off in coaching but not in talent - what is Jimbo going to do at AU that he has been unable to do at FSU, FSU has some great players, just like Auburn has but he has not done anything worth while since he took over, and you think AU is going to give him 3-4 years to deliver? Once he drops a few to a middle tier SEC team he should beat the torches and pitchforks will be out

My top 3 and actually Mike Gundy would be my first choice. Man has passion, proven track record as a HC and he is the perfect age. I think he would love the rough and tumble SEC. Watch how he eviscerates the press for throwing his QB under the bus.

Can you imagine what he would do to Finebaum?

1. Chris Petersen, Boise State

Age: 47

2011 record: 12-1, 6-1 Mountain West

At Boise State (6 years): 73-6

FBS career: Same

But for the Broncos’ one-point loss at home to TCU last November, we’d have had to have thought long and hard about putting Petersen at No. 1. Just look at that insane .924 winning percentage. Just look at the essential road wins vs. Georgia and Virginia Tech the past two seasons while you’re at it. (And, of course, you won’t ever forget the Fiesta Bowl downing of Oklahoma in Petersen’s first season.) Coach Pete is the magic man.

2. Gary Patterson, TCU

Age: 52

2011 record: 11-2, 7-0 Mountain West

At TCU (12 years): 109-30

FBS career: Same

How about that win on the blue turf in Boise last season? On the heels of a Rose Bowl-winning season, no less. TCU has won at least 11 games four years in a row and seven of the past nine. No coach in the country develops players better than Patterson. He gets his chance to bum-rush the Big 12 now, and we’re not betting against him.

3. Mike Gundy, Oklahoma State

Age: 44

2011 record: 12-1, 8-1 Big 12

At Oklahoma State (7 years): 59-30

FBS career: Same

Gundy is 44! now and fresh off the best season in program history. Even when he was 40! he was on the way—unbeknownst to many of us—to a run of improving the Cowboys’ overall and/or Big 12 record in every one of his seasons in Stillwater. With 41 victories over the past four years, Gundy has established his program—and himself—among the best in the game

There is one coach that I have seen over the last couple years that seems to have the best mind offensively in college football. If he got a good defensive coordinator, he would be just as good offensively as Petrino or for that matter, Gus Malzahn. No, before you even come up with it, he does not have any HC experience. That said, he produces everywhere he goes. Not only that, but he produces huge numbers. He's been around a winner in the NFL. That would be Kliff Kingsbury. Well, you said people who haven't been mentioned much LoL.

Kingsbury has the best offensive scheme in football, IMO. I would rather have him than most of the other candidates that have been mentioned.

A name that interests me as a possible candidate assuming Gene is let go. First off, I know I am probably going to get a bunch of responses like "it'll never happen." I don't know all the details about his contract at Oregon. But if I was picking our next head coach his name would be high on my list. Here's what I would sell him on:

1. Lack of exposure playing late night games in Oregon against Pac-12 nobodys

2. Only have 1 or 2 "big" nationally covered games a year (USC, Stanford)

3. A chance to prove yourself in the best conference in the country

4. A chance to prove your style of play can work in the SEC.

5. A deeper pool of talent to recruit from.

And IF Oregon gets left out of the National Championship game this year because they "didn't play anybody" and don't have the exposure or schedule that Kansas St. or Notre Dame has, it could frustrate Kelly.

His name is just one of many coaches out there, so if you don't agree with him being a good choice or don't believe he would consider coming that's fine. Your probably right.

But I think we can all agree, or at least most of us, that these types of coaches (proven winners, big names, experience, knows what they are as a coach as what they like to run) are the types of coaches we should be going after. Gene was never qualified for this job, it's a simple as that, and I don't believe a bottom-tier coach or cooridnator is our answer.
