2013 Big Cat Weekend (Merged)

I always loved BCW but it could be some serious pressure on this new staff. I mean it's hard to get a remake to sound as good or better than the original. If the Gus version isn't filled with 4 & 5* talent then it could be a PR mess. This new staff seem to be great coaches but do any of them have the magnetic personality (ala Trooper) to attract the best talent in the country? It should be interesting.

Considering 3 of our coaches were the recruiting coordinators for schools that pulled in quite a bit of 4* and 5* talent, in their previous positions, I don't think attracting the best talent to big cat will be much of an issue on their front. The big issue will be overcoming 3-9.

the number is 4 not 3

Really? Garner, Craig, Horton and who?

Ah... he's been with AU long enough that I didn't even think about him :)

Hey E, what's the status on Jacob Park? Are we still heavily recruiting him? Is he still listening to us?

Actually just starting to listen to us again a few weeks ago. We are his best offer now with Va. Tech getting Travon McMillian

Probably true. But everybody isn't caught. And those schools caught don't suffer equal punisment to crime ratios. Anyway, when it comes to recruiting, when something really different pops up that's really effective but it's not widely copied, bells & whistles should go off. There's simply nothing (legally) new under the sun when it comes to recruiting, everybody weighs the rule loopholes and asterisks.

Everybody isn't "picked" on like we are too! I agree that IMO every big time football cheats to a certain extend. However some programs are very close to crossing the line but they don't get looked into...but h3ll if Auburn sneezes the wrong way NCAA makes a trip to the Plains!

I dare the NCAA to come after anything we do with what is going on at UA. We have been through our cleansing. They have not. I have seen (2) different players in chargers on campus. I have only been there 5 times.

And Ronnie Brown had a tricked out Escalade. Im short, errybody "cheats" based on the NCAA's outdated archaic amateurism rules.

I'm not sure what Ronnie Brown drove or where he got it. I do remember Carlos Rogers talking about having only one pair of jeans and washing them every night. I remember Carnell Williams having an old beater that had duct tape over one broken window and he had to get help pushing it off to get it started. Since those guys were contemporaries of Browns' it's rather likely that Brown came by his snazzy wheels though some legitimate means.

I can shed some light on Ronnie's situation. His family was not well off however, the family that took him in, most of his life were. The dad was a vet, right here in C'ville. And before the conspiracies go wild, they were a Dawg family. You can do a little googling and find out about the "adoptive" family if you're interested.

Yea..i heard about Brown's story more indepth during the time of his and Carnell's NFL Draft.

I like "Big Cat"....and to credit of Chiz and Trooper, this concept really shook up the competition. Seems it's worked well for the past few years and I can't see a reason to change the name or concept. We have enough experts in the compliance area on staff to assure that our coaches avoid any behavior that would bother the NCAA.

I liked Big Cat because the bammers hated it. They need to keep it if only for that reason.

Amen brother !

The numbers don't lie about the success of big cat. Its a great chance to let auburn sell itself and give guys idea what life is like here when there isn't football. Hopefully guys like Williams, Thornton, carter, and Thomas make it

for your first point. There is no way it will be a PR mess even if it is not filled with 4 and 5* players due to there not being many expectations right now. I can't even think how it could be a PR mess in the first place so you will have to elaborate on what you are thinking. Every school has an event like this and have never had a PE mess from it no matter how good or bad it was. For your second point. The phrase if it aint broke don't fix it comes to mind.. From everything I have heard Gus will use the same script of big family gatherings with games, fun, fellowship and coaches cutting up that made Chizik's work so well.

PR mess may have been a misleading phrase. Not mess as in the stuff we've been dealing with lately but I could see the media quickly spinning a BCW that is full of 3 star talent from AL, GA and FL into a "Why isnt the top talent interested in AU anymore?" kinda story. PR mess in the sense of how it could effect recruiting in the short term. The original BCWs sold themselves and became a recruitment tool on their own. The top talent from across the country wanted to be invited and rearranged their schedules to attend. The Gus version of BCW will be compared to the originals and that's a lot to live up to. That's all i'm trying to say.

I will disagree with you on one point E (respectfully of course cause you are the man  ). I think there are always high expectations for Auburn and not just from us die hards. No one tries this hard to keep the below average guy down. I think people (media, ptb, whoever) work so hard to put AU "in our place" because we are one of the few programs that can upset the status quo in any given year.

Our staff, from their previous resumes, seem to be outstanding recruiters. From the class we just signed, I don't see how anyone can question this staff being able "to attract the best talent in the country".

WE10 you may be right. I'm not saying they can't. The last few years we had a team of great recruiters but really Trooper was the star. He had the kind of personality that seemed to really get the attention of any recruit regardless of where he was from. Our current staff is really good based on their history but this staff has a very regional feel to it. I'm not sure we have anyone who could get in late on a recruit from outside of the south and give us a solid chance of getting him. Maybe we wont need to. Tubbs did quite well recruiting primarily in the south. But I have to admit I liked being in the top 5-7 of most of the best players around the country. I guess Im vain like that.

I think you are worried too much buddy. Recruiting media does not spin things out like that. Since most recruit media is in pay site they cam't afford to be negative. They would lose subscriptions and therefore money. As for the expectations part. I only meant the short term. While most of us are hoping for 8 plus wins the reality is a 5-6 season will show an improvement.

I kind of doubt it will be the splash that Chizik and his staff always pulled off every year.

It may not be this year given many recruits will have to see Auburn turn it around first but it will be in time.

E - Even I know better than to argue with au4e. Even about recruiting.

Maybe we need to launch a campaign for gus like the minions do for their half pint god saban by saying gus can give u a pathway to the draft! But he can possibly get u #1 draft status! How many does bama and saban have that actually went #1 overall?

I have a feeling that BCW with Gus, Ellis, Lashlee, Garner, Grimes, Craig, Smith and Harbison will be just as good if not better than it was before.

Me three. There's no reason why this one won't be as good or better than previous Big Cat Weekends.

The event will be as great as it ever was for the recruits that come. The question remains though will the caliber of recruits that came in the past come to this one after the 3-9 season and the staff overhaul?
