Who should be # 2?

IMHO, for what it's worth, the real question should be who is # 2, OKLAHOMA or USC? By any objective evaluation of this season, Auburn should be No. 1.

Since they beat LSU 10-9 on Sept. 18, Auburn has not won by fewer than 18 points. Oklahoma could have and probably should have, lost to Oklahoma State and Texas A&M. USC could have lost to Stanford and was very, very fortunate to escape with a win over California. Auburn has beaten three teams--Georgia, LSU and Tennessee--ranked in the current Top 15. All were ranked in the Top 10 when the games were played. USC and Oklahoma have beaten one Top 15 team apiece.

The bottom line: Auburn has been the most dominant team in the country. Auburn has beaten more highly ranked teams than any other team in the country. Auburn has the best running back tandem in the country. Auburn's offensive line is as good as any in the SEC if not the country. Auburn's quarterback is as good as any in the country. Auburn is No. 1 nationally in scoring defense and has given up one rushing touchdown all season. Also, Auburn's special teams have been rock solid all year. If anyone would look at the three teams objectively and as a whole, there is no way USC or Oklahoma could be rated higher than AUBURN.

My analysis of the BCS leads me to believe that OU will jump USC for number one, USC will be #2, and we will be #3(if we win the two games). Everyone says USC is a solid #1, but OU is closer to them than we are to OU.

Here's what you run into, The argument regarding USC should have lost to Cal would be that if Cal had beat them, it was earlier in the year while we were still climbing polls, and therefore Cal no losses and we would be still stuck in this predicament.. I do agree that right now at this point and time that we are the best team in the nation. But if Cal hadn't lost to USC then we would still be where we are.

While we are playing "if's", I'll throw this out. IF Cal were playing in the SEC and had to play LSU, ARK, TENNESSEE, GEORGIA, & ALABAMA, they would have lost two or three games by now. They play in the PAC 10 for goodness sake. If they had to play FLORIDA or AUBURN, you could add at least ONE possibly TWO more losses. :big:

There are several ways to look at this. If you look at power rankings (who is playing the best right now), Auburn is definitely No. 1. If you look at who has a win over the best team, then USC's victory over Cal has to rank first. It doesn't hurt when you have won 20 straight games either. However, if you look at strength of schedule, Oklahoma is ahead of USC and Auburn.

Had Auburn played Bowling Green instead of The Citadel, Auburn would be in the top 2. The weak non-conference schedule (Louisiana-Monroe, The Citadel, Louisiana Tech) is killing the Tigers. USC will have played Virginia Tech and Notre Dame, and Oklahoma will have beaten Bowling Green and Oregon.

Next time, we need to try a little harder to find a quality replacement opponent instead of throwing a $100k bone to a lower division school like The Citadel.
