Tigers to Swim Alabama on Eve of Iron Bowl in Tuscaloosa

Women's Notes l Men's Notes

Nov. 17, 2004

AUBURN, Ala. - The Auburn swimming and diving programs will take on Alabama on the eve of the Iron Bowl in Tuscaloosa as the two schools take the in-state rivalry into the pool on Friday night. The meet is set to start at 5 p.m. in the Alabama Aquatic Center.

Auburn will be swimming for the second time this season as the Tigers took on Georgia on Friday, Nov. 12, at the James E. Martin Aquatics Center. The Auburn men downed the Bulldogs, 145-96, to claim their 25th consecutive dual meet victory. The meeting with Alabama will be the 35th in the series for the men's teams, the only team that Auburn has swum against every year in that 35-year span.

The Auburn women will look to rebound from their loss to the top-ranked Bulldogs, which snapped AU's 40-consecutive dual meet victory streak. The Tigers did see a handful of good swims in the meet with the Bulldogs, including Hayley Peirsol's school record in the 1000 free (9:40.06) and Kirsty Coventry's wins in both the 200 back (1:5707) and 200 IM (1:59.13), both of which were NCAA automatic qualifying times.

Alabama features Anne Poleska and Vlad Polyakov, both bronze medalists from 2004 international competitions. Poleska's medal came in the 200-m breaststroke at the Athens Olympics while Polyakov's double-bronze outing came in the FINA World Championships in the 100- and 200-m breaststrokes.

Alabama's women's team is 4-1 while the men are 3-1, both coming off of losses to Kentucky.
