Decent start by the men's team

DALTON, Ga. - The No. 20 Auburn men's golf team is in 10th after the opening round of the Carpet Capital Collegiate, shooting a 6-over, 294 at The Farm Golf Club on Friday.

Senior Dan Stringfellow shot an even-par 72 and is tied for 18th. The Roselle, Ill., native collected birdies on the par-4 first and par-5 second, 12th and 15th holes as part of a four-birdie outing.

"I'm happy with the way the guys fought today, and we a lot of good golf ahead of us," head coach Nick Clinard said. "They hung in there today, but we just didn't have anybody go low. Both Dan and Matt had four birdies apiece so that is something to build on for tomorrow."

Sophomore Matt Gilchrest, from Southlake, Texas, had four birdies and shot a 73 and is tied for 24th. Jake Mondy, a junior from Blacksburg, Va., shot a 2-over 74 and is tied for 35th. Junior Michael Johnson from Birmingham is tied for 43rd with a 75 while sophomore Ryan Benton of Dothan is tied for 52nd at 76 with sophomore Will Long, who is playing as an individual.

Fantastic move by the Mens team now in 1st

DALTON, Ga. The No. 20 Auburn men's golf team fired a 13-under 275 behind a pair of 66s from Matt Gilchrest and Ryan Benton to jump from 10th to a five-way tie for first after the Carpet Capital Collegiate second round on Friday at The Farm Golf Club. The Tigers’ 13-under is tied for the sixth lowest single round score in school history.

The Tigers (275-569) are tied with No. 1 Alabama (283-569), No. 3 Georgia Tech (276-569), No. 9 LSU (287-569) and Kennesaw State (288-569). The quintet is two shots ahead of Clemson (284-571) followed by No. 12 South Carolina (281-572) while Wake Forest (287-573) and Chattanooga (282-573) in a tie for ninth.

Gilchrest, who is three shots off the lead, vaulted from a tie for 24th to fifth at 5-under 139 as he recorded seven birdies en route to his 66 while Benton climbed from a tie for 52nd to a tie for 16th at 2-under 142 with his bogey-free 66 with six birdies. The 6-under score is a tie for the 11th lowest in school history.

“I am extremely proud of the way the guys came back today,” Auburn head coach Nick Clinard said. “It was some very exciting golf from the entire team up and down the order. We had four of our guys under par, and there is not much more you can ask. The pair of 66s by Matt and Ryan was exceptional.

“We can build off of this round. We all start over at even par on Sunday, and we need to have the same mindset. This tournament is wide open with nine teams within four shots.”

Michael Johnson is in a tie for 29th at 1-over 145 after shooting a 2-under 70 and is tied with Dan Stringfellow, who had a 73. Jake Mondy is tied for 42nd after a 73 for a 147 total.

Will Long, playing as an individual, fired a 3-under 69 and is tied for 24th at even par 144.

Tennessee (280-576) is in 10th followed by North Carolina (291-577), North Florida (292-592), Middle Tennessee State (299-599) and Florida (288-600).

Georgia Tech’s Ollie Schniederjans leads the tournament at 8-under 136 after firing an 8-under 64. Alabama’s Robby Shelton is a shot off the lead with a 68-137.

Auburn will tee off No. 1 in Sunday’s final round with co-leaders Alabama and LSU at 8 am Central.

Finished at #3 not a bad start for the season.

DALTON, Ga. - The No. 20 Auburn men's golf team shot a 5-under 283 to finish tied for third at the Carpet Capital Collegiate, four strokes behind No. 12 South Carolina and three behind No. 3 Georgia Tech on Sunday at The Farm Golf Club. Sophomores Matt Gilchrest and Ryan Benton finished in the top 10.

Three eagles on the par-5 12th hole by Gilchrest, Benton and Jake Mondy helped Auburn (283-852) finish tied with Kennesaw State (283-852) at 12-under and a stroke ahead of No. 1 Alabama (284-853).

"We played some very good golf over the past two days, and this is a tournament we can build on," said Auburn head coach Nick Clinard. "We were a stroke back with a few holes to play and gave several shots back."

Gilchrest and Benton each shot 2-under 70s as Gilchrest tied for fourth at 7-under 209 while Benton tied for 10th at 4-under 212. Michael Johnson had an even-par 72 to finish tied for 29th at 1-over. Mondy, Dan Stringfellow and Will Long all tied for 32nd at 2-over 218. Mondy had a 71 while Stringfellow shot 73 and Long a 74 playing as an individual.

South Carolina fired a final round 12-under 276 to edge Georgia Tech (280-849) by a stroke. Clemson (284-855) and No. 9 LSU (286-855) tied for sixth ahead of Wake Forest (286-859), North Carolina (284-861) and Chattanooga (293-866).

Tennessee finished 11th at 296-872 followed by North Florida (294-886), Florida (297-897) and Middle Tennessee State (308-907).

Georgia Tech's Ollie Schniederians won medalist honors at 12-under 204 with a final round 68, two shots ahead of Alabama's Robby Shelton and three ahead of LSU's Stewart Jolly.

Auburn's returns to action at the Primland Collegiate Invitational in Meadows of Dan, Va., September 29-30.
