  • Graduate transfer defensive back Marshall Taylor was absent for the fifth day in a row. Taylor has been out while dealing "with a personal issue."
  • Freshman running back Stephen Davis Jr. showed up late to practice on Sunday for the second straight day, according to a team spokesman. Davis, a late addition to Auburn's 2016 signing class, was late to Saturday's practice as well, according to offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee.
  • Quarterback John Franklin III spent a few minutes during the open portion of practice working as the holder on field goals. No, that doesn't mean Franklin won't be the Tigers' quarterback — that competition is still ongoing — but it could be that he will serve another role for Auburn: that of Batman, the name given to Auburn's trigger man on 2-point conversions. While Franklin didn't appear to be working on any trick plays, there's potential for that in the future — though the team using a quarterback as holder is a new wrinkle. In the past, players such as Ryan White (a quarterback-turned-cornerback), Jonathan Wallace (quarterback-turned-receiver) and Tyler Stovall have been the team's holders. Stovall is still expected to maintain that role this season.
  • Redshirt freshman Mike Horton received some first-team reps at right guard during protection drills early on in practice in place of Braden Smith, the team's starting right guard.
  • Former Auburn coach Pat Dye was in attendance at practice.

  • Jeremy Johnson and Sean White were still working with the first-team offensive linemen while John Franklin III remained with the backups. Auburn offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee attempted to downplay the hype surrounding Franklin III Saturday night saying his inexperience at quarterback is a factor in this positional battle.
  • A new Auburn verbal commit was at practice Sunday as Anders Carlson, the younger brother of current Auburn kicker Daniel Carlson was on the sidelines watching with his family. Carlson and his father chatted with Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn during stretching for a few minutes.

Looking like #10 James is going to be a very good pickup. He looked good in ADay, and looks like he has good feet in the drills.

Late to sign, late to practice...What's with this guy? Should we have just saved the scholarship? He's certainly not off to a good start. His Pops knows better than this, so what's up?

Sounds like he is now taking a medical redshirt and out.

Malzahn post-practice ...

-- Focus was on red zone. Yesterday was 3rd downs. Operated with three groups

-- Marshall Taylor, "we do expect him back in the near future"

-- Tre' Williams tweaked his ankle on Thursday

-- Woody Barrett could go live during scrimmage on Tuesday. Three vying for starting job will not.

-- "It's always possible" to name starter after Tuesday's scrimmage

-- On T.J. Neal, "I think you can tell he's a veteran guy. ... I'll be real curious to see how he plays in the scrimmage. ... So far he's done a solid job."

-- On possibly playing all three quarterbacks in the season opener, "I doubt that will happen .... unless it was a trick play."

-- Xavier Dampeer has has his best practices in fall camp, Malzahn says
