mad4au 17
Thanks for all you do RIR. I know it has been said over and over, but our DL could be really really nasty. Glad to hear Kyle Davis is back. Hopefully M. Taylor will be able to contribute soon. War Eagle!!

In all seriousness, guys like Holland and Lawson are built to tackle guys like Watson. Whether or not they can do it, who knows, but we've got as good a shot as anybody Clemson played last year. Yeah, I like our d-line as much as anybody against Deshaun Watson, but stopping him is tough task for even the best of defenses. I worry about our *LBs and inexperience at the other DE spot, but at least we have a chance at pressuring from- and maybe even somewhat taking away- one part of the field. *The way I saw it, Lamar Jackson went nuts in the Louisville game last year because the DL was still getting a good push but there was nobody keeping the lanes that they funneled him to. Fingers crossed for improvement. Tre Williams is the boss back there now and that bodes well. Let's hope he's got some help. That kid has seen some good QB's up there too. If Davidson is as good as coaches said, he should be good for the other side. Especially against Clemson, where his lack of experience will be made up for having no tape at this level. PJ3 also seems to be an extremely fast DE. Dont count out Byron though. If he can play up to his potential (even if it's just in bursts at first) our d line will literally be too much to handle.
AU80cruiser 1,102
^^^ TJ Neal may have some decent stats from the big 10 but when Illinois played good competition in the conference he looked like Jake Holland 2.0. Maybe he has improved since last season but I find it hard to believe a seasoned college player like TJ has much room for improvement. Hope he proves me wrong but I don't think I am in this case. JMassie11 1,610
The key to containing Watson is to have a good push front the DTs and DEs to contain. If we can somehow do this with 4 we will be fine
lionheartkc 6,150
Honestly, my biggest concern is that, historically, when we've had a quality line that focuses on speed, we've spent the first couple of games overrunning every play because we get in the back field too fast. I hope they focus on keeping Watson in front of them until they put him on his back.
McLoofus 35,182
*reading thread over and over again and savoring all the football talk minus arguing and insults* I have no opinion yet on TJ Neal. Just gonna have to see how he does. #insight #useful
mcgufcm 4,096
See, I think the only early issue we had against Louisville wasn't overrunning the pass rush. Lamar Jackson hurt us on designed runs. He wasn't routinely breaking contain and using his legs on busted pass plays. The real issue we've had is whether our guys can be complete players. When they are told to pin the ears back, Monty Adams can be dang near unblockable, but on a 2nd and 7, he gets pushed out of the hole to give up 5 yards up the gut. If our DL can add consistency to their explosiveness, we're going to be hell out there. As for the DEs, I love the group we have. Davidson and Cowart add needed size on the end. Lawson is as complete a player as we have on the team, at any position. He can kill a run game, and he can rush the passer. Holland and James look like true pass rush specialists, and having waves of guys who can collapse the pocket can turn any offense on its ear. mcgufcm 4,096
LBs should be interesting. I still don't think we have the numbers we need for a full 6-7 man rotation, which is what you normally want, but I'm really optimistic about the Williamses, Neal, and Davis. If Atkinson and Threat can play as well, that's just bonus round stuff for me. I expect we'll live in Nickel with Ford/Holsey manning that spot most of the time.
