Popular Post JMR 2,118
Things I Think I Saw: Auburn vs Arkansas….. As fans, when our team plays extremely well, and blasts an important opponent, it’s always tempting to think, “If only we’d played that way against (insert name of opponent in disappointing loss earlier in the season).” As an old fan, one is more inclined to just enjoy the moment and forget about earlier games. Life is short, and football season is even shorter. When your team is on fire, SAVOR the moment. Appreciate a great win for what it is, and don’t dilute the joy with whimsical reflections on what might have been. Auburn Football 2016 delivered for its fans this week, blasting “Bert” Bielema and his Hawgs in front of an electric Jordan-Hare crowd. These are a few things I *thought* I saw while watching the game…. Auburn was incredibly well-prepared for the game on both sides of the ball. Rhett Lashlee and Herb Hand have augmented the offense with some well-conceived tactics that fit Auburn’s personnel extremely well. Kevin Steele and the rest of the defensive staff have brought the fun back to Auburn defense. Lashlee’s play-calling is unpredictable, yet practical. There is nothing in the game plan that he is reluctant to call, and the execution is indicative of excellent coaching and preparation during game week. Lashlee has taken a lot of criticism from pretty much all Auburn fans, when we all know that’s unfair, given we never knew just what role he had. Now that he’s been given the keys to the offense, I find myself thinking often about the Alan Jackson song, “When Daddy Let Me Drive.” Bottom line, he’s doing just fine. Kudos to right tackle Robert Leff. Not only for his performance in this game, but also on the improvement he continues to make from game to game. Leff is not the most talented of Auburn’s offensive linemen. His footwork and hip positioning is not textbook-pretty, but he gets the job done through effort and intensity. Braden Smith has become the beast up front that many expected when they first saw his high school tape. Smith is a dominating force, and can literally be as good as he wants to be. I feel for Xavier Dampeer, but the offensive line of Austin Golson at center and Darius James at left tackle is clearly one of the best five-man groups in the SEC. The improvement in Golson at center over Golson at center last year is hard to comprehend. Golson could easily be more violent, but he’s twice as nasty this time around as he was all of last year. Chandler Cox is getting better every week, and now, in his second season, is approaching the kind of play he showed consistently in high school. He can be better still, but he is on the road to being a dominant blocker in Auburn’s offense. This was not Sean White’s best game throwing the ball. Don’t get me wrong…..I’m a Sean White fan, and he’s our horse for the duration of this race. But he was not as sharp on his fundamentals last night as he has been recently, and I found myself wondering if the QB coach has been busy with putting together game plans and coordinating the offense, thus not spending the time with the quarterbacks he once did. I couldn’t help but notice the overall improvement in our wide receiver play. I’ve thought all along that Kodi Burns might become an excellent coach if he worked at it, and I’m becoming convinced that’s happening. On Eli Stove’s explosion on Auburn’s first offensive play, Tony Stevens blocked down while Chandler Cox blocked out, and the timing of the play was perfect. Stevens didn’t exactly crush his man, but he was where he was supposed to be, when he was supposed to be there, and the play was executed to perfection. Got to appreciate the coaching that went into that, especially given Stevens’ history in blocking. Byron Cowart is becoming a real factor in the Auburn defense. For a couple of games now, he’s shown excellent technique and effort, and that continued last night. Lined up at defensive tackle, he drove his man all the way to the Arkansas QB, then made the sack. At defensive end, he had a huge tackle for loss. On both plays, he used good technique and body position to beat what should have been a fairly easy block. On the subject of Cowart making plays from both tackle and end, I was impressed with the thought that had gone into Rodney Garner’s allocation of his resources in this game. Auburn often deployed with Jeff Holland and Carl Lawson at defensive ends, and Mon Adams and Marlon Davidson or Cowart at defensive tackle. I saw Cowart at both end and tackle, Adams at both, Davidson at both, and Lawson at both. The result was a big-time pass rush while only sending four.I haven't looked at the stats, but I think Auburn had at least four sacks, and 12 or 15 QB hurries. Hard to establish a passing game when you're facing that kind of heat. Was good to see AU get back to using the speed sweep motion to widen the defensive ends and outside linebackers. It’s a “little thing”, but it makes a big difference. And the fact that Eli Stove took one to the house right out of the gate no doubt made the Arky defense more conscious of that motion. Great to see Stanton Truitt finally healthy and able to contribute the way he can. His confidence has to be bursting at the seams now, and he’s only going to get better. Truitt is a natural runner, and if he can stay healthy, he will be a huge help to the offense down the stretch this season. Kam Pettway is a man playing a kids’ game. The big guy has some quicks, and is a lot more than just a battering ram. Pettway’s size is obviously a factor in his play, but his “disposition” is what makes him a physical challenge for defenders. He likes it physical, and has the body to back that up. I like the little I see of Kam Martin. He runs hard for a small guy, and after a year in the Strength and Conditioning program, he is going to be another weapon for AU. Deshaun Davis was not 100% healthy for this game, but played his tail off anyway. Tre Williams is becoming more and more consistent. I continue to be impressed with Darrell Williams’ coverage skills and general “knowledge of the game”. What an incredible job being done this season by *first year assistant* Travis Williams. T-Will apparently applies the same effort and intensity to coaching he used to make himself an All-SEC linebacker. One of the fun things to watch about this Auburn defense is the execution and technique when the ball is snapped. There is no confusion, thus no hesitation. Every man knows his job and is executing it with constantly improving consistency. I can’t say enough about how happy I am with the job Kevin Steele is doing. Sometimes things just work out for the best, and having Steele join the Auburn staff at this time is one of those things. Another well-timed circumstance for the AU staff is the arrival of Coach Crime Dawg. Auburn has had some excellent secondary coaches over my lifetime, and McGriff is as good as any of those. Our secondary seldom busts a coverage, and plays with great confidence. I enjoy watching the techniques applied by our cover guys, and as they get experience, that is only going to improve. Javaris Davis is still coming on as a cover corner. His interception last night was a thing of beauty. The idea of “The Davis Brothers” (Carlton and Javaris, not really related, of course) as lockdown corners in next year’s AU defense is something to really look forward to. Rudy Ford made some big-time plays in run defense last night. His speed and his “demeanor” make him special. I feel certain Ford could be explosive at running back, but 1. He doesn’t appear to be needed there, and 2. He would be sorely missed from the defense. I don’t really know how to describe how I feel when watching Marlon Davidson. I don’t mean to be hyperbolic, but I’m honestly not sure I’ve ever seen a better *freshman* defensive lineman, and I’ve watched a fair amount of games in my lifetime. He plays all-out-all-the-time, which we can all testify is a heck of a lot easier said than done. Speaking of freshmen defensive linemen, Derrick Brown played a good bit last night. He was too high much of the time, but putting plays on tape is how learning occurs, and he’s gonna be a great one. Mon Adams continues the awesome effort play after play that has made him one of the top linemen in the SEC this fall. Always a gifted athlete, Adams has become a terror inside, and even outside when he plays there. Impressed with Andrew Williams again. He’s not as flashy as some of the other defensive linemen, but Williams is “textbook” with his technique most of the time, and has been a consistent positive factor in the defense. Kudos to him for the improvement he’s made since last year. Obviously, a lot of backups got a chance to play this week. Usually when that happens, things slow down and become a little sloppy. I was pleasantly surprised at how hard some of the young guys played. Rather than just being wide-eyed and going through the motions like zombies, those guys got after Arkansas like the game was on the line. That’s great stuff, and says a lot about the culture of the program at present. Time now to prepare for another tough one, and on the road at that. Ole Miss is always dangerous with Chad Kelly, and when he’s on, they are hard to beat. But they were on the receiving end of a very physical game with LSU this week. Their OL is struggling to protect Kelly, and they are about to face a very very good defensive front. If Auburn can continue to improve as they have in recent weeks, this can end up being a remarkable season. I really like this Auburn football team. Love the effort on both sides of the ball. Fun to watch, and easy to be proud of. War Eagle!

Maverick.AU 13,279
Great post. One thing I noticed last night is how disciplined our D has been coached with the late hits/targeting by the sideline. However, teams are starting to take advantage of that and cut it up last second and turn a 3-4 yard gain into 9+. Really hate to see a rule cause those things because our D is better sideline to sideline than it has been in awhile.

I think they will be somewhat split on carries but KP has to be called the starter now. We need both. I have no idea of the injury or progress but I would guess KJ would be partially ready and get about 8-10 touches this week and increase from there. Kerryon makes more happen when the hole isn't there.
ToomersRevenge 284
I think I saw: A team playing while having fun. It has been a while since I've seen both sides of the ball appearing to enjoy themselves out there. And that's one of those things that just comes with confidence. When you know your role and KNOW that your teammates know their roles, you have faith. And the execution is just there. It's great seeing these guys enjoy the game again.
Dshep4au 266
Still savoring last night's victory. It is hard not to say "if only" about those Sept losses by how fun for the rest of the season that we are just getting better every game. It has been a long time since I have enjoyed a game as much as last night especially the defensive play!!!

Charhair 345
I wonder if Golson lining up against a&m and Clemson's pass rushers showed him how nasty he had to be. Dude is getting some pretty blocks on the inside i LOVE seeing Bubba bounce it outside too a GIF of Bo smiling and shaking his head after that TD where Bubba bounced it to the outside perfectly describes my feelings when he runs the ball
AUMASTERS 555
Thanks JMR- I agree with everything you said, I even told my son as we were playing how much better Chandler Cox was blocking compared to earlier in the season. But this is what I like " Another well-timed circumstance for the AU staff is the arrival of Coach Crime Dawg. I enjoy watching the techniques applied by our cover guys, and as they get experience, that is only going to improve". I noticed that even when the receiver made the catch that someone was always right there with them; this is a huge improvement over the last several years where a wide receiver was open, with no Defensive Back within 5 yards of them. One more thing that I noticed is Ryan Davis has some great hands; there was one catch on the sideline and there were hands around the ball, and he not only made the catch, but got a couple of yards to boot. doc4aday 1,887
Does anyone know what Bubba's 40 speed? My guess is in the mid 4.5 range. I think in some ways he is tougher to deal with than Fournette. Fournette is faster, but Bubba is just plain meaner and this is a good thing no doubt. When KJ is back up to speed, our offense will go from very scary all the way to the wrath of a category 5 hurricane.

Yeah, I remember very well, canuck. I still feel like going to Stanton right out of the gate in that game was unwise, but as Pat Dye used to say, "hindsight is always 50-50". If he'd gone for a TD, I'd have thought it was brilliant. In any case, I said on our podcast last week that I wanted to see more of Truitt at running back, and I'm glad that happened.
