2018 4* QB Joey Gatewood (Auburn 12/5/15)

Not positive I agree with that. People feel like Eason may transfer, and if they lose to us with Fromm looking average again, are we 100% sure Fromm holds that job?

If I were in Fields' position, I might see a program that keeps competition open even with an incumbent starter and seems willing to play the younger guy.

Gatewood is legit and won’t be a TE. His floor will be Hurts pretty much. Excellent on the ground and spotty in the air. His ceiling is the heisman, just like this guy

No, his "floor" is a guy who doesn't even see the field, just like every other QB recruit.  To suggest that his worst case scenario is the starting QB on a very good team (Hurts at Alabama) is absurd.

He will see the field, if not for wildcat situations alone. To say otherwise is absurd.

And the “starting QB on a very good team” has been exposed against Washington, Clemson, and Auburn.

First off, running "wildcat situations" is a hell of a lot different than what Hurts does at Alabama.  Secondly, I never said that Hurts was some infallible quarterback, just that you seem to be completely oblivious to the fact that the flame-out rate for QB prospects in this league is extremely high, which you should know by now given our own obvious QB failures.  Hurts is the starting QB on a team that has won 25 games the past two seasons.  Gatewood's "floor" isn't Hurts...its Kiehl Frazier: a terrible starting QB on a bad team that shouldn't even be starting but is doing so because the team is bad.  Even Alabama has had elite QB recruits (eg: Cooper Bateman) who never see the field; Jalen Hurts by comparison is far from the worst you can do at that position.

So, if JG signs and shows up to campus in 2018, what is reasonable best-case scenario for AU's QB progression over the next few years?

Stidham-Willis w/RS Gatewood (2018)

Gatewood-Willis w/RS Nix (2019) (assumes Stidham to NFL draft after 2018)

Gatewood-Nix-Willis (if Willis hasn't already transferred) (2020)

I'm sure I'm leaving some potential QB recruits out, so let me know what you guys think. Please.

You're either assuming or hoping Gatewood will start over Willis. I'm not sure why.

Otherwise, yeah, those are the names and years we're currently working with. Definitely not a given that Nix will sign with us, though.

Edit: We are still trying to find another QB to join Gatewood in this class. I think Emory Jones is the name I've heard most lately.

Never said this. The more accurate description of my argument is that being the wildcat QB is a helluva lot different than never seeing the field( his floor, according to you), and its pretty obvious Gatewood has the talent and the measurables to run in between the tackles or to get short yardage. Gatewood may not ever be the starting QB, but at a bare minimum, he’s got DT capabilities that raises his floor from just your average QB.

Never said that you did.

I only know Gatewood’s strengths and I know how Malzahn would like to utilize them.

I didn’t say nor intend to say that Gatewood’s floor was Hurts’ win/loss record. I don’t know why you keep bringing his irrelevant record up when he has always had the best talent that money could buy right beside him to help him win. I said floor for the talent comparison as in “great on the ground, spotty through the air.”

Just assuming, not hoping. Pretty much my entire list is assumptions.

Still, wouldn't make that assumption. Willis is a hell of a talent and he got some quality reps in this offense this year. If Stid does stay, then you're right that Gatewood will likely redshirt and then Willis has 2 years' experience on him.

I think you are dismissing Willis way to quickly

Jury is still out on Willis. The game needs to slow down for him just so he can make some reads and we can see what he is all about. It seems like he is so hyped up, he is sure to keep the ball on zone read on his first play. We need to see him make more throws and more decisions

TBH the best-case scenario on QBs rarely works out for most schools so I'm not sure it's even worth speculating on but here goes.

The #1 best case is Stidham staying & being healthy through his Sr year of 2019 bringing stability. Willis may have transferred by then but if not in 2020 you have him as a SR battling w/ a RS Soph or JR in Joey,  & Soph or RS Frosh if we get Bo Nix.

#2 would be your 2nd scenario of Stidham leaving after next season although Nix would be a true frosh not a RS frosh in 2019.

I think if JG ends up being our only guy in this class, which could happen, we really need Stidham to stay next year. We shall see.

That’s pretty dangerous.  Might be good to line up a few JC guys just in case.

JC QBs would only be interested in AU if Stidham leaves which he is unlikely to do. JC QBs want to start.

thats what I'm saying.  Gotta get those guys on stand-by.  I don't think he leaves either, but he's shooting up scout's boards.

Links?

And the staff is very confident in Malik so you sign a high schooler not a juco. No need to bring a juco in & him messing up team chemistry by whining because he ain't the starter.

The ones I talk to at home games still question his size & durability.

I think he has proven the durability this year but size you can't so anything about ( well I guess he is tall enough just needs to put on some muscle). I think he comes back (or at least I hope so).

I  don't look at draft boards unless I see it on my twitter timeline and I don't remember the particular tweets except this power ranking from nfl.com.  Unranked to #7 in 3 weeks.

I just did a twitter search on Stidham and NFL...holy crap at the rumors.  This guy claims Stidham is entering:
