aubiefifty 16,624
espn.com What the Jarrett Stidham signing means for Auburn QB Sean White Greg OstendorfESPN Staff Writer AUBURN, Ala. -- What does Sean White have to be thinking right now? The Auburn quarterback joined his teammates at practice Wednesday in what was his first appearance since he re-injured his shoulder against Georgia over a month ago. According to head coach Gus Malzahn, White did everything the other quarterbacks did and didn’t miss a beat. The redshirt sophomore looked like he was back to 100 percent. The shoulder isn’t White’s only concern, though. On the same Wednesday that White returned to practice, Auburn signed former Baylor quarterback Jarrett Stidham, the No. 1 overall player in this year’s ESPN JC 50. Auburn's Sean White has been one of the SEC's most accurate passers this season. Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images “Obviously, [Stidham] is a guy that we’re familiar with,” Malzahn said. “We started recruiting him way back when. We felt like he was the top quarterback in the country when he came out and then he chose to go to another school. So for us to have a guy like him -- we think he’s an outstanding player, an outstanding person, has got great leadership -- so he’ll be a great addition to our team.” Malzahn went on and on, gushing about how Stidham can make all the throws and how he can run and extend plays with his feet. He talked up his leadership qualities and his maturity. To be fair, it was the first time Malzahn was able to speak on his new quarterback. But the news conference and the decision to sign Stidham wasn’t exactly a vote of confidence for White, a guy that has already been through plenty of ups and downs the past two years at Auburn. As a redshirt freshman in 2015, White took over for Jeremy Johnson four games in. He started five consecutive games before a knee injury kept him out for the remainder of the regular season. He returned for the bowl game. The next offseason, Auburn brought in junior college transfer John Franklin III to compete with White and Johnson heading into the 2016 season. White won the job out of fall camp, but Malzahn used all three quarterbacks in the season opener against Clemson. The plan failed miserably. White ultimatley became the guy and had the offense humming in the month of October before a shoulder injury limited his abilities and forced him to miss the last two games. Now, for the second straight offseason, the Auburn coaches brought in another new quarterback who expects to come in and play right away. “We’re going to let them compete and see who wins the job,” Malzahn said. It’s hard to fault Auburn. Stidham was easily the most coveted junior college prospect on the market, and some at Baylor think he had the potential to be one of the better quarterbacks Art Briles had ever coached. As a freshman, he threw for 1,265 yards with 12 touchdowns and two interceptions while completing 69 percent of his passes. It also helped that Stidham still has three years left to play. But if he wins the job next year, that means White -- the SEC leader in completion percentage going into the Georgia game -- would spend his last two seasons at Auburn on the bench. At that point, it would only make sense if the former Elite 11 winner opted to transfer to a place where he could play. But don’t expect White to lie down that easily. He’s never been one to wave the white flag. He’s going to fight to win the job, regardless of circumstances. That’s why it’s so important that White is back to 100 percent. The competition will begin next week when Stidham arrives on campus. The newcomer, who won’t officially enroll at Auburn until Jan. 8, is expected to take part in a handful of practices before the team departs for New Orleans. For Auburn, it's a good problem to have. For White, it's yet another challenge.
80Tiger 898
Looks like you are up and at early this morning fifty. Good article. I think in this day and age a team better have the absolute best talent you can get. It looks like JS is an upgrade in talent over SW. Over Gus's tenure at AU whether OC or HC dynamic QB play seems to be a common thread for real success. Over the last 2 yrs our QB play is avg. Yes SW is accurate but not down field. He is not a real running threat so defenses can still play us tight. In the other article it states that OU is terrible at defending deep passes. We don't throw deep passes very well, so that is a concern. I think Gus certainly realizes we wasted a great defensive effort and talent this year. Put this D with 2013 and 2014 and we are back to back NC. I think any coach will get great talent whenever they can. I hate to say look at UA but they sign QB talent every year and then let it falls where it may.

Nothing was "wasted". If you want to say injuries to the QB and both starting RB's caused us to lose a few games we'd have otherwise won, OK. But nobody wasted anything. I was very disappointed in the QB Carosoul in the Clemson games as well. It appeared Gus was wanting/hoping JJ's "game day light" would come on and it just didn't. That, plus JF-3 just wasn't ready. Maybe it took the Clemson game to realize, SW was never going to be a Heisman Candidate, but he was the best we had. It is a shame it took a loss to realize this but it was what it was. AUpreacherman22 3,841
As I stated before, I like our 2017 QB situation MUCH better than in 2016. I don't care who wins the job, we have much better options. JS could be the Heisman stud many are hoping for. We (almost) all know that SW is a very efficient QB when healthy. Health issues have been a concern. And Woody has a lot of potential coming off a RS year. We might even add TF LN to the mix (he is an EE so he has more time to develop at AU before next August) I like SW. He is a scrappy gamer and good game manager with very good accuracy. He has leadership and a contagious attitude. Our sample size of JS is small, but Gus can't stop gushing over him. To say he is the favorite going into the offseason would be an understatement. Woody has good size (please no jokes, it's a family board) and athleticism. He has a ton of potential in this offense, but it's only potential at this point. My Prediction: Jarrett gets the start Sean is the true back up in case of injury, etc. Woody has a package (again with the jokes) and is used as a "change of pace" from time to time. If we land LN, he will redshirt JF3 is moved to another position or transfers
AUwent 3,739
^Yeah, '17 already looks a lot better at QB than this year did pre-season. I think most people here were outright panicking after the spring game. That included me.

doc4aday 1,887
I think our QB situation is a very good one if handled correctly. I hope that Gus will back off and let Rhett develop the QBs. This will be very interesting indeed!

aubiefifty 16,624
al.com How John Franklin III feels about Jarrett Stidham joining Auburn quarterback competition James Crepea | jcrepea@al.com John Franklin III came to Auburn to compete and presumably win the starting quarterback job. Even with the benefit of spring practice, Franklin was unable to edge Sean White in the longest quarterback battle of Gus Malzahn's college coaching career and saw limited time last season. With former Baylor quarterback Jarrett Stidham and a yet-to-be named new offensive coordinator joining the Tigers, the competition for the starting job will be intense as Franklin prepares for his final college season. Franklin wasn't bothered that Auburn brought in a prominent newcomer to join the mix though. "They did it with me," Franklin said. "Competition - you bring in the best of the best every year. At this level, you're going to have to compete wherever you go. "It didn't bother me. They're trying to get the best; everybody wants to be the best. You just got to come in and play." Franklin was 14 of 26 for 204 yards with a touchdown and had 46 carries for 430 yards and two scores last season. His only start came against Vanderbilt, when an injured White took over at halftime. White has adopted the underdog mentality as he enters a position battle with Stidham, who threw for 1,265 yards with 12 touchdowns and two interceptions for Baylor in 2015. Jarrett Stidham a 'good fit' for Auburn offense, Rhett Lashlee says Auburn is once again turning to a dual-threat transfer to revitalize a beleaguered passing game. Franklin doesn't have the luxury of time though. He maintain his intention is to stay at Auburn for his final season and says he's open to changing positions if need be. Franklin said there was no "hostility" between the quarterbacks when Stidham joined the team for bowl practices on campus in December. "Sean and Jeremy (Johnson) welcomed me last year when I walked in the door; it's the same thing," Franklin said. "We all need family and we're all going to compete. When Sean won, I congratulated him. "This spring, it's whoever the coaches feel like is best for the team; that's who (will) go and we'll ride behind them regardless whether it's me or not."
