Seth Russell may have spent more time around Jarrett Stidham early in his college career than any other player.

The former Baylor quarterback recalled his former teammate, now at Auburn, as a confident young signal caller when he was with the Bears in 2015.

"He's going in (to a competition) thinking he's the best guy for the job," Russell said. "You have to have that. He has a lot of confidence in himself, which he should, he's a guy that can make any throw you need him to make. ... He was a hard worker. He's a perfectionist, he wants to be the best at everything he does and he shows that on the field."

Stidham took over the starting job at Baylor for three games when Russell suffered a season-ending neck injury. The then-true freshman was 75 of 109 for 1,265 yards with 12 touchdowns and two interceptions in 10 games with three starts and was particularly effective on deep passes.

"I wouldn't say that he's cocky, but you can tell the difference between a guy who plays confident and doesn't," former Baylor center Kyle Fuller said of Stidham. "That's everything about being a quarterback; you have to have confidence. You have to have confidence in your offensive line to block. You have to have confidence to take those throws when you need to."

Jarrett Stidham was one of the most accurate and productive quarterbacks in the country while at Baylor in 2015, according to analysis by Pro Football Focus.

Teammates and former competitors in the Big XII alike praised Stidham's abilities on the field.

Former Kansas State defensive end Jordan Willis didn't know what to expect from Stidham when he made his starting debut against the Wildcats. Willis found out quickly as Stidham threw for 419 yards with three touchdowns and added a rushing score in a 31-24 road win.

"He's a guy that could sit in the pocket and if he had somebody to throw to he could hurt you," Willis said. "I think he's got a strong arm. I think he's a tough kid as well. He can scramble as well, if you give him a lane."

Oklahoma State had a bit more to reference when it played Stidham two weeks later, as Baylor also played Oklahoma before visiting Stillwater.

Jordan Evans introduced himself to Jarrett Stidham rather aggressively.

Cowboys safety Jordan Sterns was impressed with Stidham, who suffered a season-ending broken ankle while throwing for 258 yards and a score in helping Baylor win 45-35.

"Especially as a freshman to step up and make those plays, make great reads," Sterns said. "Baylor does run a simple offense but still it takes a lot for a guy to come in, especially as a freshman, and make the play, make the throws he was making. You could tell he's just confident, the way he carries himself.

"The throws he was making; him to Corey Coleman, KD Cannon, those three was just making plays. We knew what to expect and we tried to force him to make mistakes, but he made smart decisions. Tried to disguise and bait him into things but he was real good with his reads."

Russell said Stidham "tried to fight through" a broken ankle in that game before conceding he would be hurting his team if he played in the second half.

"It definitely means something when (quarterbacks are) ready to put their body on the line," Fuller said. "I think he's prepared to be that leader that's needed to be called on. You already have to be a leader to play at the quarterback position; that's the truth of that spot.

"He's the type of guy that can tell his confidence, his swagger is going to get him through. That might inspire guys around him. ... I definitely know that he's going to do well at Auburn."

The fact that he could not even sell a read option or let a play develop tells everything in the Gus system.  Every play he could have made a Cam or NIck play but that ability is rare, hopefully Gus realized this.

I actually remember going to watch the bowl game with my local Auburn Club in 2009 and everyone was totally buzzing about Cam at that point. I also remember everyone really expecting amazing things for A-Day only to be very disappointed and wonder if Trotter wasn't the better QB.

I recall no one buzzing about Cam much less any Heisman hype. I do recall numerous people dismissing him after A-Day, a huge assumption. From 12/31/09 when he signed, to Game 1, most folks (including AU fans) expected around the same number of wins as 2009.

I called for nothing less than a SEC and National Championship. Was because of Cam's JUCO film, numerous Seniors and my forecasted defensive MVP, Fairley.

Did I forecast Cam and Fairley winning the Heisman and Lombardi awards, respectively? Hell no. But I did draft Cam 1st Round in two fantasy leagues. Not because of AU bias. Because of TD and yardage expectations in a Gus offense that was off the charts the previous 3 seasons. With his JUCO film combined with what Gus did with Chris Todd, he was hands-down worth my 1st Round pick.

This is how I was. We had inarguably the best recruit, along with the best recruiting class in the country coming in.

Along with the best O-Line and most importantly, best Senior-laden class.

Most folks have no idea...we lost 37 players off the 2010 team. 26 Seniors, Cam, Fairley, Adams, Eric Smith, 3 transfers and the infamous 4 boneheads.

I remember people thinking Cam was gonna make us better,... not NC's though. Like a "we got a huge dude to run QB sneaks and can take punishment and stay in" type guy.

Dyer, everyone thought he would do well, but also a good bit of people were let down that he couldn't get Lattimore to join him at Auburn.

But those are two of the closest I can think of.... it's hard to compare when the NC fever at Auburn basically started after Cam's season here.

Huh? Pat yourself on the back big guy. You got it, right. The general consensus did not know what we had on Cam Newton. A broken clock is right twice a day.

But here you go

My prediction:

Stidham locks up the starting position by the end of Spring.

White will be a solid back up.

Woody will get to play some in limited snaps.

Malik redshirts

JF3 moves to slot/speed back role and gets some decent minutes behind Stove.

Worst case scenario:

1. Stidham goes down

2. White goes down

3. Woody goes down

4. Queen goes down

5. Cox goes down

6. Franklin starts

And Cole finally gets to see what JFIII can do while the starter in multiple games against all type of defenses.  Can't wait.
