Oh it is Gus alright. He never intended to hire someone to run their offense. He is looking for someone to do his bidding. He wants someone to act like they are calling the plays. Heck what has Mazzone got to lose. It is a paycheck and he is pretty much at the end of his career anyway. In fact it might give him enough time to qualify under the state pension program. Gus has never been serious about this. As I said ( I know some have a reading comprehension problem) I have come to believe that Rhett himself decided to leave because he saw life under Gus as a dead end street. Gus would have kept him as long as he did what he was told. I bet you Gus was not happy to have to act like he turned the reigns over to Rhett midseason. The man has serious ego problem. I believe this story will follow the path of Chizik. Gus will be let go next season and will get no more chances as a HC. He will revert back to being an OC if anyone will take a chance on him.

I don't believe this in the least.

At this point Kevin may be willing to pay the buyout for him to leave, especially to Gus.

In on page 100!

Gus, if you hire Leo, I will not watch or listen to any Auburn games until you are gone and we have brought in a coach who can get the job done. This could be a blessing in disguise and we could hire Lincoln Riley and let him run the show. I know I joke a bit, but this is serious stuff. Gus better get it right.

I don't think Gus is going to hire the Braves' former pitching coach...

Why is that?  I ask because we have a defensive coach covering each of the major areas with no one pulling double duty, but our OC has to serve double duty as a QB coach. I would think it would benefit us to have the OC completely freed from an assistant role.

Adding a sixth (seventh, if CGM is involved) coach on offense with four on defense, which is including the DC, seems way off balance.  I just think it's a good opportunity to add another strong recruiter to the defensive staff.  So many guys coach ST that never played as a specialist, so I kind of think it's a bit of a catch-all/ball coach type role.  Not that it's easy or anyone can do it, just that it seems to be a job that a lot of guys get very early in their career---I don't have anything to back that up, I might be way, way off.

WDE!

I agree. If Gus does hire Noel, then that should tell everyone that he doesn't care if Auburn goes 7-6 or 8-5 again and gets beat by LSU, Georgia and Alabama.

For God's sake. If Noel is hired, it's safe to say either Gus isn't serious about winning here, or he's just not good at this job.

Given enough time, reality becomes transparent to all.

Mazzone to Auburn and Gilbert to A&M. You heard it here first!

That's like your neighbor getting a Diamond Back HL Turbo BMX for Christmas and then when you see your's it turns out your Mom & Dad bought your same neighbor's old Huffy...

fwiw, Steel and Mazzone have interestingly similar resumes - journeymen with mostly successful but unspectacular stints including several in the southeast. They're even about the same age. Not stumping for him here but Mazzone had a good 2016 at aTm (where he coached a multiple O that included frequent use of the spread), he was Philip Rivers' OC and slimeball Dennis Erickson worshipped him.

Maybe Tubs was in Auburn to give his old buddy Noel a reference (no I don't really believe this). WDE, can Mazzone actually be considered a BBQ gang member since Tubs fired him in '01?

If Gus and / or Auburn is actually considering rehiring Noel Mazzone AND paying a $1+ million buyout for the opportunity, then we are left with no choice but to demand a public flogging of all involved.  They must then be fired and excommunicated from the human race.
