Spring practice observations: Auburn OC Chip Lindsey gets detailed with QBs

By Michael Niziolekmniziolek@ledger-enquirer.com

Auburn offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey didn’t like Woody Barrett’s footwork on a three-step drop during individual drills Tuesday.

Lindsey quickly pulled Barrett aside to show him the proper technique.

The new assistant coach repeated the process when true freshman Malik Willis didn’t get his shoulders properly squared away on a throw.

Lindsey talked fast to avoid missing many reps, but got his point across. When Willis garnered praise from the coach when he followed through with the adjustments on the next throw.

The offensive coordinator worked exclusively with the quarterbacks during the period of Auburn’s first practice reporters (15 minutes) were allowed to watch.

Lindsey is balancing reps between five quarterbacks while Sean White shadows the coach as he rehabs his broken forearm. The assistant stressed accuracy and footwork working through the group through a series of different throws (at different distances) including quick reps off a fake handoff to simulate RPO reads.

When the team transitioned to a pace drill, Baylor transfer Jarrett Stidham worked with the first team offense, redshirt freshman Woody Barrett worked with the second team and John Franklin III worked with the third team.

Other observations

  • The first team offensive line during the pace drills featured Darius James at left tackle, Marquel Harrell at left guard, Austin Golson at center, Mike Horton at right guard and Barden Smith at right tackle. Coach Gus Malzahn announced Smith would be the team’s first option for replacing last year’s starting right tackle Robert Leff. The team’s plan going into spring practice is to keep Golson at center and focus on developing new starting guards.
  • The second team offensive line featured Prince Tega Wanogho at left tackle, Tucker Brown at left guard, Kaleb Kim at center, Tyler Carr at right guard and Prince Michael Sammons at right tackle.
  • K.J. Britt was on crutches with a wrap around his right leg. He was one of the players Malzahn ruled out for spring earlier in the afternoon.
  • Auburn released an updated roster revealing the numbers of recently added players. Stidham has No. 8, Willis No. 14, Malcolm Askew No. 16, Chandler Wooten No. 17, Britt No. 33, Nick Brahms No. 52, Tashawn Manning No. 56, Brrodarious Hamm No. 59 and Sal Canella No. 80.

That looks solid to me.  Minimal disruption to chemistry and keeping 3 starters and adding a guy with a lot of backup reps.

If this Stidham guy and Woody both pan out and we can just focus on them...that'd be great. No more bs at qb please. Franklin needs to switch positions and not waste his or our time anymore.

I think the biggest news for Auburn fans is that he was visibly working with the QBs.  Also refreshing to see this instead of the usual first 15 minutes of practice for the QBs that involved stretching and the "ball tied to a stretch string" drill.
