Baseball v Lipscomp (sun)

Recommended Posts

Played a good team but not a great team. We should have swept this bunch. Got to improve.

They were saying theirs a chance of rain on Tuesday. I never cheer for a game to be rained out, but we could use it. Who are we gonna start these two games? I'm thinking Mitchell for one. If Klobisits can't come back then we may have to go with Sprinkle, which would be horrible. Hopefully we have a freshman I don't know about who we could give a shot

You are too young to remember the old cry from the Boston Braves (yep the same old Braves)....."Spahn and Sain and pray for rain"....  when discussing their lack of pitchers.    Expect you or someone could come up with an equivalent lament.

Yep and that was in the day when Spahn was about 44 or so and still was throwing well over 100 pitches per game.....however many it took to win it or lose it.

Not to hijack but the game is over.......remember Harvey Haddix throw an 12 inning perfect game and lose. 36 batters in a row

The guy had a classic windup that you never see anymore......and Juan M had that high leg kick....got lots of body behind their pitches.    It looks like hard work but they were so smooth....might have been a factor in throwing so many pitches in a game.

Golf....Enjoyed the reminiscing ....most folks here don't remember this stuff.....but it's what I grew up on....thanks to my dad who was a big baseball fan..

I remember that old stuff. He didn't look it, but Eddie Matthews was FAST on the bases and Carl Furillo could throw a a strike from right field to 3rd base on a line. Speaking of Furillo, all the stuff that's wrong with the world today is because the Dodgers left Brooklyn.

Now, back to today's game, I stayed through the last out. Hate to lose one by walking them in. I haven't checked the box score, how many walks did we give up? We got a bunch too, but we didn't get the good out of them.

I wouldn't have pulled Calvin Coker, he was getting them out. But then I don't know his personnel like the coach does.

Special for AU64: Total of three players sent to the plate to bunt in this game. One (ours) struck out. One of theirs got behind 0-2 but managed to work a walk. Their other one completed a successful bunt, moving the runner from 1st to 2nd. That turned into a wasted out when the next batter walked.  Positive results from bunting=0. :)

Shame on you Mikey...in trying to prove a negative you forgot to mention that something like a dozen runners left on base , inning ending double play...and another game in the L column.

JMO...but likely if CBT keeps doing what he did last year and he will get the same results.:dunno:..though this one was on the pitching...

The only reason I can see why there might be fewer LOB when a team bunts a lot would be because you've cheated yourself out of several opportunities to hit the ball. We left any number on in scoring position. No matter how they got there, at that point somebody has to get a good hit and we didn't do that, 20's big double being the exception.

I'm disappointed in the pitching. This is Coach's second year and I thought that by now we'd be ahead of where we are. All the walks are inexcusable.

Yep....Walks are game killers....and it's been a pretty safe prediction  for AU lately, that relievers will walk the first batter they face....just pains me beyond words to see guys aiding the enemy like that.  DS probably should have been pulled after his second walk.....I understand the concept of building his confidence but on the other hand, there should be some consequence to throwing the ball all over the place like he did....mostly not even close to the plate and as someone noted above, leaving him in the game to walk in the eventual winning run.....boy that's hard to understand.

Did not hear anything else about Klobositz who got pulled after his second pitch....hope it was just a tweak ....he's erratic but we do need him for mid-week at least.

We gave up 10 walks but so did Lipscomb....AU had a total of 21 base runners...Lipscomb about the same.

I was about 10 then. I always loved the pitching motion of Marichal. So crazy unique. Its unbelievable to think both of these pitchers threw over 200 pitches each, and still went out there 5 days later for their next start.

And to think pitchers only need to go 6 innings these days with all the relief specialists teams use.

I'm not. Coach has got 2 solid starters, and it looks like we have some very good relievers too. I think the only area that is a problem is finding that 3rd starter. Now, it is hard to believe that they guys he has tried there, Klob, Sprinkle, and Daniel have totally not even come close to pitching well at all. It seems they either can't find their control or they simply can't get hitters out, even early in games.

I think Thompson has left the 3rd starter in as long as possible to get enough innings and pitches in to give them a chance to make corrections or find their ryhthm and confidence for future starters. But they have been so bad, i don't know where he will look to find at least a pitcher that won't give up 5+ runs even before the 3rd inning...

But overall, i think in only his second year, he has settled down our pitching much better than in prior years. OFC, its a whole different ballgame when we get to the SEC. That all could change.
