Quarterback: Done in 2018 class

Signed (1): Joey Gatewood*.

Committed, but unsigned (0): None.

Targets remaining: None.

Misses: Emory Jones, Justin Fields, Jarren Williams.

Plan to National Signing Day: Done at quarterback.

For the most part, Auburn got what it wanted in the 2018 class at quarterback.

Gatewood committed early on in his recruiting process and never wavered. The 4-star quarterback has improved steadily throughout his high school career despite playing in a two-quarterback system with another Division I prospect. As an early enrollee, Gatewood will work his way into a competitive quarterback room with Jarrett Stidham and Malik Willis.

With Bo Nix’s commitment for the 2019 class, Auburn won’t need to worry about the missed attempts on Fields, Williams and Jones. Any of them would’ve been a nice piece to add to the class, but the Tigers’ quarterback group is shaping up nicely for the future.

Running back: Debate whether to take a third

Signed (2): Asa Martin*, Shaun Shivers.

Committed, but unsigned (0): None.

Targets remaining: Harold Joiner, Kavosiey Smoke.

Misses: Dameon Pierce, Master Teague.

Plan to NSD: Likely to take one more, but could be done.

I wrote about this in a little more detail Thursday for the Auburn Recruiting Question of the Day. It feels like a two-man race for Auburn’s third running back spot in the class — if the Tigers plan to take a third running back at all.

Kerryon Johnson and Kamryn Pettway are gone, so it seems like a third would be a given, right? Well, that’s all dependent on how the coaching staff feels about current Tigers Kam Martin, Devan Barrett, Malik Miller and JaTarvious Whitlow, along with Martin and Shivers. You also have to factor in the top Class of 2019 running backs who might prefer Auburn leave its 2018 depth chart the way it is.

My inclination says: Take a third this year and still shoot for the top 2019 backs. It’ll be a Joiner vs. Smoke competition for right now. I give Joiner the slight edge in odds heading into the official visit window, but that can easily change during the next two weeks.

Auburn wide receiver target Justyn Ross will take an official visit later this month. (Benjamin Wolk/SEC Country)

Wide receiver: Willing to take a top-tier prospect

Signed (2): Shedrick Jackson*, Seth Williams.

Committed, but unsigned (2): Matthew Hill, Anthony Schwartz.

Targets remaining: Justyn Ross, Ja’Marr Chase.

Misses: Kearis Jackson.

Plan to NSD: Will take one more if it’s one of two elite targets.

Auburn didn’t miss much at wide receiver in the Class of 2018. Williams and Hill were big-time recruiting wins. Schwartz was a steal thanks to persistence through a Florida coaching change. Shedrick Jackson seemed destined for the Plains, but a diamond-in-the-rough, nonetheless.

Kearis Jackson is the only offered receiver who I’d consider a miss, and even that had more to do with the recruiting momentum it would add for Fields. Auburn has more than made up for that miss and others at wide receiver to this point.

Hill hasn’t signed yet, so that’s something Auburn will be mindful of in January. He’s going to take his official visit this weekend, and the staff will try to close down any Clemson threat once and for all. Schwartz just recently committed to Auburn, so that’s the only reason he isn’t signed.

If Auburn takes another wide receiver — the Tigers look like they have four locked up — it’ll be one of two targets who fit into the elite category. Chase is from Louisiana and looks to be on a collision course with LSU’s class. Ross is the in-state prize Auburn, Alabama and Clemson will fight for in the month to come. Both will take official visits in January.

The Tigers would gladly take either of those two, but they’d also be plenty proud of the quartet already on board.

Auburn recruiting-Nathaniel Watson
Auburn ATH target Nathaniel Watson will officially visit this weekend. (Benjamin Wolk/SEC Country)

Tight end: Closing in on two potential targets

Signed (0): None.

Committed, but unsigned (0): None.

Targets remaining: Matt Alaimo, Nathaniel Watson.

Misses: Luke Ford, Michael Parker.

Plan to NSD: Expect to take one of targets who officially visit this weekend.

Gus Malzahn made it clear at his early signing day news conference that a “big-time tight end” was atop the priority list for Auburn leading up to National Signing Day. There’s no question that was a call for Ford to join the Tigers. Instead, he committed to and signed with Georgia in a bit of an expedited recruiting surprise.

Auburn immediately turned its attention to other prospects.

The Tigers offered New Jersey’s Alaimo and re-initiated contact with Mississippi State commit Watson, who has family ties to the program. Auburn will host both of them on official visits this upcoming weekend.

Alaimo is the more preferred of the two, but he also recently picked up an offer from Texas A&M, so the Tigers may have to wait to land a commitment with him. As for Watson, he’s still committed to Mississippi State, but if Auburn tells him it wants him on board, I’d expect a flip.

South Carolina recruiting
Auburn will host Dylan Wonnum on an official visit this month. (Hale McGranahan/SEC Country)

Offensive line: Area of emphasis in month ahead

Signed (2): Kam Stutts, Jalil Irvin.

Committed, but unsigned (0): None.

Targets remaining: Dylan Wonnum, William Barnes, Richard Gouraige, Jalen Goss, Tank Jenkins, Ed Montilus.

Misses: Trey Hill, Nicholas Petit-Frere, Badara Traore, Christian Armstrong, Walker Culver.

Plan to NSD: Most likely to take two more tackles and maybe an interior linemen.

This will be the biggest area of focus in January for the Tigers.

Signing only two offensive linemen during the early signing period means a busy month for Herb Hand & Co. The Tigers haven’t had much luck at the position in the 2018 class, but they also have most of their top targets since the beginning of the process still out there for the taking. Sure, Hill and Traore were misses, but those misses can be easily corrected with a successful National Signing Day.

At offensive tackle, the plan would be to take two of Wonnum, Barnes, Gouraige and Goss. Goss is the only one to have officially visited already. The other three will all be on campus as some point before National Signing Day. Auburn would probably prefer to take two of three from that group to visit in the next month, but Goss as a fallback plan — and maybe the one with the highest upside — would be a great solution, as well.

There are two offensive guards to keep an eye on next month. The first is Montilus who is high school teammates with Barnes, and the two of them will take official visits together on Feb. 2. The other is Jenkins, an in-state target who has been on Auburn’s radar for a while.

It’s not as much of a guarantee that the Tigers take another guard as it is they take a couple tackles, but a Montilus-Barnes package deal would be impossible to turn down.

IMG_9365_wkjzlf.jpg
Four-star defensive end Caleb Tannor re-opened his recruitment. (Benjamin Wolk/SEC Country)

Defensive line: Several potential targets, if spots allow

Signed (2): Daquan Newkirk*, Kayode Oladele.

Committed, but unsigned (2): Coynis Miller, Richard Jibunor.

Targets remaining: Caleb Johnson, Caleb Tannor, John Mincey, Tramel Walthour.

Misses: Andres Fox, Brenton Cox, Azeez Ojulari,

Plan to NSD: Could take one more if other scholarship spots permit.

Priority No. 1 for Rodney Garner’s position group will be to make sure Miller and Jibunor sign in February. Miller is the bigger concern of the two, I suppose, but it would surprise me if either didn’t sign with the Tigers on Feb. 7.

Another year, another solid defensive line haul for the Tigers.

There were a few early misses on guys such as Cox and Ojulari. But those happened early enough that Auburn had ample time to figure out other options. Fox was the most recent blow, considering he’d been silently committed to Auburn for a while during his process. Once he was accepted to Stanford, though, Auburn knew Fox was all Cardinal.

Now, will Auburn take any more linemen? If Garner had his wish, of course. But with four already in, it’s possible the Tigers would go all-in on the 2019 class instead of taking another in 2018.

There are a few options still out there, however.

Mincey de-committed from Arkansas on Thursday, and he visited Auburn late in the season. Johnson was a regular visitor at Auburn this season. Walthour is one to keep an eye on if Georgia goes in a different direction with its quickly filling class. And Tannor would be tough to pass up, assuming his grades are right.

Auburn-Quay Walker
Alabama commit Quay Walker is still giving Auburn a shot. (Benjamin Wolk/SEC Country)

Linebacker: Focus on priority target committed to ‘Bama

Signed (2): Michael Harris, Zakoby McClain.

Committed, but unsigned (0): None.

Targets remaining: Quay Walker, La’Dedric Jackson.

Misses: Channing Tindall, JJ Peterson, Adam Anderson.

Plan to NSD: All eyes on Walker.

Travis Williams got the two he really wanted dating back to the spring: Harris and McClain.

He made pushes for Tindall, Peterson and Anderson — all really good players who chose other SEC programs — but Harris and McClain were two he sought out early on in the process and would’ve hurt to miss on.

Now the full attention turns to one can’t-miss prospect: Walker.

Walker remains committed to Alabama, but with Jeremy Pruitt and Derrick Ansley gone, the Crimson Tide seem poised to be pick-pocketed by several other programs. Auburn, Georgia, Tennessee and Florida will all fight for Walker’s commitment. It’s possible he takes official visits to all four.

Each of those schools will gain buzz during the next month and a half. The Tigers have been a real threat to Alabama since the beginning, and that won’t change.

cam-taylor-auburn-recruiting
Auburn target Cam Taylor attended the Iron Bowl. (Benjamin Wolk/SEC Country)

Defensive back: Elite or in-state?

Signed (4): Christian Tutt*, Quindarious Monday*, Jamien Sherwood*, Josh Marsh*

Committed, but unsigned (1): Kolbi Fuqua.

Targets remaining: Tyson Campbell, Kelvin Joseph, Olaijah Griffin, Joe Foucha, Cam Taylor, Roger McCreary, Rachad Wildgoose.

Misses: Kyler McMichael, Jalyn Armour-Davis, Saivion Smith,

Plan to NSD: If Fuqua doesn’t sign, expect to see two new names join the class.

This was a point of emphasis early in the recruiting process, and the Tigers made sure to figure it out quickly. Hence the high volume of early enrollees at corner and safety. Monday, Tutt, Sherwood and Marsh will all fill various roles as true freshmen — whether it be in the defensive backfield or on special teams.

The initial question is: What will happen with Fuqua? It’s possible he takes a grayshirt, but if other spots don’t shake out as planned, it’s also possible he just signs as normal in February. It’s also possible he ends up out of the class altogether. That’s something to monitor going forward.

Regardless, Auburn’s work isn’t close to done in the secondary. New 10th assistant and defensive backs coach Marcus Woodson will be a focal point along with already-established defensive backs coach Greg Brown.

They’ll attempt to go the elite route with guys such as Campbell, Joseph and Griffin. Griffin is the most likely addition of that group. Auburn will try to get all three on official visits. If those don’t work out, there are a few lesser-rated targets — Foucha, Taylor and McCreary — who have had strong interest in the Tigers since the beginning of the process. All three will take official visits.

One name to keep an eye on is Wildgoose. He’s committed to Georgia, but he didn’t sign early. If the Bulldogs land another defensive back in January, their spots will start to fill up. It’s possible Wildgoose would have to look elsewhere. Auburn offered him during his senior season. With the Tigers’ immediate need, it would certainly be a possibility.

Arryn Siposs-Auburn-recruiting
Arryn Siposs looks to solve Auburn’s punting woes. (Benjamin Wolk/SEC Country)

Specialists: Going the Aussie punter route

Signed: (0): None.

Committed, but unsigned (1): Arryn Siposs.

Plan to NSD: Get Siposs’ paperwork finalized.

There aren’t a ton of details to dig into here.

Auburn has its kicker situation figured out for the next few years with Anders Carlson — the younger brother of Daniel Carlson — taking a redshirt season in 2017.

Now Auburn hopes it has found its solution at punter, as well. Siposs comes from the same Prokick Australia program that the last five Ray Guy Award winners have been groomed at. He’s already taken his official visit. Now it’s just a matter of getting his Australia-to-America paperwork and academics in order.

That's awesome indeed! Huge need for us considering we had the 14th worst punting average last year.

Top Auburn recruiting targets before National Signing Day in February

Four-star wide receiver Justyn Ross will be a top target in January.
Benjamin Wolk/SEC Country

Auburn’s sprint to National Signing Day begins now.

The contact period has begun, which means the Tigers will host several top targets on official visits and will make trips to see several prospects. It all kicks off this weekend when Auburn hosts 14 prospects on official visits. The Tigers signed 15 during the early signing period and have another six committed, but unsigned. Expect at least five of those committed but unsigned targets to sign on National Signing Day.

That means there are only roughly five spots to fill in the 2018 class. Here are the top targets Auburn will go after, in no particular order, and where things stand with each.

Harold Joiner, 4-star RB (Birmingham, Ala.)

Auburn already has two running backs signed in the Class of 2018. Now the time has come to decide whether it will take a third. The Tigers have a few options to join Asa Martin and Shaun Shivers, but Harold Joiner likely sits atop that list.

The 4-star running back is the highest-ranked uncommitted running back in the nation. Joiner ranks as the No. 6 running back nationally, according to the 247Sports composite. His recruitment has been all over the place in recent weeks because of a communication mishap with LSU that eliminated those Tigers from the equation.

Joiner will be the first of two running backs — Kavosiey Smoke is the other — who will take official visits to the Plains in January. He’ll be at Auburn for an official visit from Friday to Sunday.

Dylan Wonnum, 4-star OT (Tucker, Ga.)

Dylan Wonnum will be the first of three elite offensive tackles who plan to visit Auburn in January.

Wonnum’s visit will take place this weekend from Friday to Sunday. He has plenty of experience on the Plains. Wonnum has been a regular visitor to Auburn throughout his junior and senior years. His most recent stay came for the Iron Bowl.

It’s not a coincidence Michael Harris and Jalil Irvin, despite already signing, will take their official visits the same weekend as Wonnum. Harris plays on the same high school team as Wonnum. Irvin grew up with Wonnum in the Stone Mountain, Ga., area. Those two Auburn signees will be called upon to assist the coaching staff in persuading Wonnum.

South Carolina is the biggest threat to Auburn here. Wonnum’s older brother plays for the Gamecocks.

William Barnes-Richard Gouraige-Florida recruiting
Auburn offensive line targets William Barnes (left) and Richard Gouraige (right) are major wants for the Tigers. (Jordan McPherson/SEC Country)

Richard Gouraige, 4-star OT (Tampa, Fla.)

Richard Gouraige showed signs of a wavering a Florida commitment at the Iron Bowl. The Gators hadn’t hired Dan Mullen at that point, so Gouraige didn’t have much information to form a decision on. He now has that information, and it looks more and more like Gouraige won’t stick with Florida.

There are two schools to keep an eye on: Auburn and Clemson.

Gouraige will take an official visit to Clemson this weekend. When he made his Florida commitment, Clemson was the other program in the mix for the 4-star offensive tackle. Gouraige will take his official visit to Auburn next weekend on Jan. 19.

Those two official visits will likely be what determines Gouraige’s ultimate decision. One element of the conversation is undeniable. Auburn is in much more desperate need of immediate impact offensive tackles, and that could be the difference maker.

William Barnes, 4-star OT (Apopka, Fla.)

William Barnes fills out the trio of desired offensive tackles.

Barnes will use the last official visit weekend to make a trip to Auburn on Feb. 2. He hasn’t been to Auburn much in the last year. In fact, he didn’t visit Auburn the entire 2017 calendar year. But Auburn’s need for an offensive tackle and Herb Hand’s persistence led to earning the Tigers the visit. Since they’ll have the last official visit, nothing can be ruled out.

For now, North Carolina is probably the team to beat. That’s where Barnes will take his visit this weekend. He’ll also take an official visit to Ole Miss the following weekend. It’s possible Florida or Florida State work their way in for an official visit as well, but those haven’t been set in stone yet.

Barnes would be a nice top-100 piece to add to the class.

Justyn Ross, 4-star WR (Phenix City, Ala.)

The time has finally come for Justyn Ross to make a decision.

Alabama’s top-ranked prospect has always known it would be a National Signing Day decision. For that reason, he hasn’t been the center of attention so far in the 2018 class. That’s about to change with Auburn, Alabama and Clemson all pushing mightily for his commitment.

Ross hasn’t ever come out and labeled any program as his leader. Clemson has been the perceived team to beat for a few months, but the top prospect in Alabama rarely leaves the state. The national champion Crimson Tide will make their push despite his area recruiter Derrick Ansley leaving for the Oakland Raiders.

Meanwhile, Auburn will try to put a bow tie on one of the more impressive wide receiver recruiting hauls in recent memory.

Auburn-Quay Walker
Alabama commit Quay Walker is still giving Auburn a shot. (Benjamin Wolk/SEC Country)

Quay Walker, 4-star LB (Cordele, Ga.)

Can Auburn pull off the flip of the Alabama commit?

Well, the Tigers coaching staff won’t be the only one trying to make that happen. Georgia, Florida and Tennessee will be in the mix, too. Walker’s recruitment will be one of the Southeast’s most interesting to follow leading up to National Signing Day.

Recruits don’t flip from Alabama often, especially when the team just won a national championship. But there are a few external factors at play in this one. Both of his primary recruiters at Alabama — Jeremy Pruitt and Ansley — have taken new jobs elsewhere.

In Auburn’s case, the Tigers will try to use the pull of his relationships with defensive coordinator Kevin Steele and linebackers coach Travis Williams. They’ll also hope his high school teammate relationship with Markaviest “Big Kat” Bryant pays dividends.

Matt Alaimo, 3-star TE (Montvale, N.J.)

Matt Alaimo is the tight end target who entered the picture after Auburn missed on Georgia signee Luke Ford. Alaimo will take his official visit to the Plains this weekend, and it wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see him leave as an Auburn commit.

The Tigers are clearly in search of a pass-catching tight end. Alaimo fits that need. The 6-foot-5, 235-pound tight end was once committed to Pittsburgh, but he de-committed just before the early signing period. It’s not a coincidence Auburn swooped in during that early signing period to offer.

One program that could keep Auburn from landing his commitment this weekend is Texas A&M.

The Aggies have also offered recently since Jimbo Fisher took over as coach. It’s possible Alaimo wants to take an official visit there before making his final decision. But if Auburn coaches are convincing enough, he’ll be a Tigers commit by the end of the weekend.

Joe Foucha, 3-star DB (New Orleans, La.)

Joe Foucha has called Auburn his leader even when it didn’t seem like the Tigers were in the market for more defensive backs. LSU will also make a push, if spots allow, in January, so keep an eye on the in-state school as well.

Auburn will look at a few defensive backs options in January and February. Foucha will certainly be a part of that conversation.

He has an official visit set up to the Plains on Jan. 19. As Auburn narrows in on other safety-corner hybrid types, Foucha will be one to watch as well. He attended Auburn for the Iron Bowl, and his reaction following that game made it clear he’d love to suit up for the Tigers in the future.

His official visit later this month will say a lot about Auburn’s defensive back plans.

I’ve read on here & other AU’s sites that we are gaining the attraction of several top Grad Transfers. Since we didn’t have a thread for this I thought I’d make one so this can be discussed. Have any of y’all heard anything?

Here is an article about him transferring. https://www.google.com/amp/collegefootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2018/01/09/three-year-starting-offensive-lineman-leaving-rice-as-grad-transfer/amp/ . A thread will be created on each individual grad transfer when they are considered to be legitimate prospects for AU to take or have heavy interest in AU. We don't need a thread trying to lump them all together when they will have their own threads.

With that said there's a thread on Grad Transfer OL Casey Tucker. And I'm about to create another one on another prospect.

Ok lemme say that I'm really REALLY excited about this recruiting class. We got a whole artillery of weapons and we need to use them correctly. The playbook needs to be adjusted for obvious reasons plus to account for all these studs. No more running a player into the ground. We should be using two-rb sets, if we get Alaimo te passes more than twice a season. We have reloaded on offense and hopefully we get one of those 4 star OT's and I'll feel much better. Spring camp and Fall camp should be very interesting. I also love the comradery that these cats have already....Matt Hill and Matt Harris plan to workout together and our speed demons Shivers and Schwartz are competing in track and always hanging together plus everyone recruiting for us. This is my first recruiting class where I've followed all the way through and this has given me a positive mindset after that dreadful ending of a season. It's on you Gus AGAIN! We got the talent! Whatcha gonna do about it?!
