Malzahn Gives His Take On Spring Drills

Mark Murphy

Auburn football coach Gus Malzahn and the Tigers are heading into a break after two weeks of spring training.

Auburn, Ala.--With his Auburn football team one-third of the way through spring football drills, Coach Gus Malzahn said that so far he approves of what he is seeing.

“We have got five days under our belt of spring practice and I am very pleased,” he said. “Our defense you can tell they are a year older in Coach Steele’s system and are flying around.

“The offense with Coach Lindsey, our guys have really caught on well--a lot of energy. Our special teams have done a good job, too, so the first five days are off to a good start.”

Kevin Steele is in his second season as offensive coordinator. Chip Lindsey is in his first season as offensive coordinator. For the 2017 season running backs coach Tim Horton has added the assignment of special teams coordinator.

“We are going to have spring break and give them a little bit of a break and we will come back and have 10 practices,” Malzahn said. “It couldn’t be going better up to this point.”

The Tigers went through a full pads practice on Thursday. “It was a good one,” Malzahn said. “We really got after it.”

With the university on spring break the Tigers won’t return to the practice until Tuesday, March 21st.

Larry Porter is in his first season coaching tight ends for the Tigers.

Asked about how the quarterbacks are doing, the head coach said, “The quarterback position, I think, is off to a good start. For Coach Lindsey it has been good for him to work with those guys and evaluate those guys.

“We have got a lot of reps--more seven on seven reps in the first five days than we have had in the past,” Malzahn pointed out. “That is by design. He is a getting a feel for them, they are getting a feel for him also. I?think it is good competition. You can tell each day the guys are getting better.”

The quarterback group includes sophomore transfer Jarrett Stidham, returning starter Sean White, a junior, along with redshirt freshman Woody Barrett, early high school graduate Malik Willis, redshirt sophomore Tyler Queen and senior walk-on Devin Adams

The Tigers have yet to scrimmage this spring. The first one is tentatively set for Saturday, March 25th. The annual A-Day Game will kick off at 1 p.m. on April 8th at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
