ellitor 33,039
Quote 5 things Auburn fans should know about wide receiver commit Anthony Schwartz Auburn landed a commitment from 4-star wide receiver Anthony Schwartz. Sam Spiegelman/SEC Country Benjamin Wolk Posted 1 hour ago Auburn picked up a major commitment on Thursday when 4-star wide receiver Anthony Schwartz committed to the Tigers. The American Heritage (Fla.) talent chose Auburn over Florida during a live broadcast of the Under Armour All-America Game on ESPN2. Schwartz’s commitment moved the Tigers up a spot in the 247Sports composite team rankings — from No. 10 to No. 9. Here are five things you should know about Auburn’s newest commit: 1. Anthony Schwartz is fastest recruit in country, and that isn’t an exaggeration. When you hear “fastest recruit in the country,” it can easily come off as hyperbole. And when that moniker sits beside most prospects, it probably is exaggerated. For Schwartz, it’s accurate. In March, the 4-star wide receiver participated in the Florida Relays, a big Sunshine State track event. He blew past the 100-meter dash competition — past and present — with a time of 10.15 seconds. That time set the World Youth Record previously set at 10.17 seconds. To give an idea of how much the World Youth Record translates to the future, the record-holder for the 200-meter youth record is Usain Bolt. So yeah, Schwartz has Olympic-caliber speed. 2. He was so fast that Carl Lewis — yes, that Carl Lewis — wanted him on a track-only scholarship. Instead he’ll run track and play football at Auburn. One of the biggest factors for Schwartz was whether the football staff would allow him to run sprints at his chosen school. Florida and Auburn were the two programs he liked the most that were OK with him running track. But those weren’t the only two schools that wanted Schwartz as a track athlete. For a while, Schwartz flirted with the possibility of taking a track-only scholarship to run at Houston. Ultimately, his love for football took over, but it wasn’t an easy decision for him. The main reason for that tough decision was the Houston coach recruiting him to run track. Legendary sprinter Carl Lewis recruited Schwartz throughout 2017 to sprint for the Cougars. It’s not easy to to tell a nine-time Olympic gold medalist “no,” but that’s exactly what Schwartz had to do to choose Auburn. 3. Anthony Schwartz’s track background has him crossing paths with Auburn signee Shaun Shivers. Schwartz isn’t the only Auburn commit/signee who runs track in South Florida. In fact, one Auburn track connection helped push the wide receiver toward the Tigers. Auburn running back signee Shaun Shivers also is a track star in the same region of the country. The two prospects have competed against each other several times during their high school careers, and that friendly rivalry will continue into the spring, as both plan to compete for prep track championships. Schwartz typically bests Shivers in the 100-meter dash, but Shivers tends to have an advantage in the 200. With both committed to Auburn, it should make for an even more exciting track season for the tandem as they meet up in state and national events. 4. Anthony Schwartz spent the last week catching passes from Auburn QB signee Joey Gatewood. Prior to announcing his commitment to Auburn, Schwartz was able to gain familiarity with a key Auburn signee. Auburn quarterback signee Joey Gatewood and Schwartz played for Team Spotlight at the Under Armour All-America Game. That meant a week’s worth of connection between a future Auburn quarterback and future Auburn wide receiver. There’s no question Gatewood — one of the more vocal, active recruiters — made his feelings known to Schwartz this week regarding his decision. Schwartz also had a few other Auburn commits or targets on that team. Auburn wide receiver commit Matthew Hill lined up at wide receiver for Team Spotlight, as did key receiver target Justyn Ross. 5. Anthony Schwartz knows what it takes to play for a championship program. One of the most underrated factors that makes a high school recruit a dangerous college talent is when they know what it takes to win championships. Prospects who played for championship-caliber high schools usually have a better understanding of what it takes to win at the college level. Schwartz comes from one of the best programs. He played for American Heritage High School in Plantation, Fla., which finished the season undefeated with a Florida state championship. American Heritage won back-to-back state titles and has a 28-game win streak. It helped the program earn the state’s No. 1 ranking among all classifications and a top-5 ranking nationwide. Needless to say, Schwartz knows what it means to be in a winning environment. 2 1
