Clemson's 'football graveyard' has a new addition ... Alabama

Creg Stephenson | cstephenson@al.com

Since 1948, Clemson has been commemorating notable wins with its "football graveyard." The graveyard honors every win over a ranked team on the road or at a neutral site.

Earlier this week, Clemson added January's 35-31 College Football Playoff National Championship victory over Alabama to its graveyard, complete with a headstone. Here's and close-up view of the headstone (via Twitter), followed by video of the occasion.

Alabama linebacker Mack Wilson is among who is using the event as bulletin-board material:

Wins over top 25 ranked teams away from home is the only qualifier to throw up a tombstone?

LOL ~ I needed a good belly laugh today.

Maybe Top 10 on the road, which would include championships - but top 25? Beating a Top 25 on the road is good and all - but far from memorable most of the time.

Growing up there it's more tradition now than importance. Back in the day it was a big deal for Clemson to beat Top 25 teams. Not anymore.

All but just a couple of SEC teams are laughing at that so-called accomplishment warranting recognition in the "graveyard."

It should also matter when you beat a ranked opponent. Every year there are several teams which were ranked in October and had no business being in the conversation in November.

This was a cool thing when an up-and coming FSU in the late 70s/early 80s was taking turf from the stadiums where they beat ranked big-time teams. This....not so much. I guess if they can't copy us they have to find somebody?
