TJ Lang to transfer

That's 3 scholly spots that can be filled now. I know the staff wants a grad transfer or European combo guard & big to fill 2 of them. Not sure on the 3rd.

Saw that we would consider a guard that can play PG as well. I had been thinking the combo guard would've been of the bigger variety, more of a slasher (like Dunans). Was surprised to hear we might consider another PG-type guard.

On TJ, best of luck to him. He had a tough situation this year. Hopefully, he lands somewhere that can better utilize his skills than we could this year.

A combo guard can play the point. Hence the reason for the category. They can usually play the 1 or 2.

And like I said, I was thinking the combo would be a 3/4 kind of player, like Dunans, since we will have two PGs on the roster.

I guess that would be a combo forward then, although I've never heard of it before...And it's best to have at least 3 on roster that can play point. With us having a Soph with questionable shot selection & game awareness as well as a true frosh coming in it's almost imperative we get another experienced guy that can do some work at the point.

Good luck to you TJ!

Can't say i'm surprised by this. You could tell based on his body language and how he carried himself that he wasn't happy this past year. Which would be expected form and upper classman that doesn't get a lot of playing time.

I understand and support TJ, good guy with a bad situation. I think we won't miss him too much but I'm a little worried that we will have trouble finding someone who can shoot as well as he can. Guess we already have enough shooters though

Seems to me like a good guy who just never fit the plan. He is an adequate shooter but never seemed to grasp the need for defense . I guess he will find another home , hope so.

Do you have any ideas on who we might go after specifically? I've seen mentions but no names and don't see a thread for it.

I know everyone hasn't yet announced their transfer decision and others such as Elijah Brown have. I feel like it won't be easy to pull the biggest name at the guard position(s) with Davion, Harper and Heron to compete with (among others) to compete with.

Still a week or 2 too early. Most GT names aren't known til near the end or after the NCAA Tourney.

I am not optimistic that we could bring in a transfer who could make any serious difference in the team for next year . I also still expect that we will lose another player somewhere along the line .

Bruce is going to have his work cut out for him next season . Instead of an additional ballplayer , I am hoping to see him get someone who is able to instill some defensive toughness in the players that we already have.

Best of luck to TJ. Hope he finds a team that will help him utilize his skill set. I would love a European Big man and a solid Combo guard. Combo guard or PG could be a grad transfer but I want a long term big man

I hope Lang finds a place where he can get the playing time he wants. He is a skilled shooter and we should commend him for coming to AU in an attempt to be a part of the foundation of this new era of AU basketball.

We need a kid who knows his primary role is a defender. We need size to help close the gaps we have on defense. And we need another guy who can create offense. This team doesn't need specialist....I'm scared we've ruined Purifoy. I'm very disappointed with the progression. The overall season went exactly as I expected but I thought we'd be a better team at the finish of the season though

Wish tj well though, he's a better fit for a veteran team who needs a final piece though

Bruch has brought in some good GTs in his time at AU. I have zero concern about him finding a good fit that meets the needs he sees for the position.

Agreed. However, it doesn't seem that Bruce ever wants to choose defense over offense. Smith was a great defensive option at the 4 this year when Spencer went out. Yet, he didn't have a big uptick in minutes played.

I've followed TJ since high school. I wish him luck and will continue to root for him.

I expect he will bring in someone but I think we need to develop players with a longer term perspective.

Bringing in one and done guys might be a way to fill a void but I don't think it's a way to build a program. Just my opinion.

It's not but there are 3 spots to fill & he has to take somebody. Also he doesn't like the unsigned high school recruits left in the 2017 class so he's gotta go through the transfer market..

This. He's not using GTs to build a program at this point, just plugging holes.

I understand that but it just leaves another hole to be filled  next year and we are back to doing the same thing again.

I also agree with E. that it would be better to take a good candidate as opposed to leaving the slot unfilled but I would prefer to see a Jucco with at least two years available.  Somehow or another we need to create a ladder of classes on the team.

Not if we do win next year & land high school players he wants.

Jucos have been the worst route for us. All 3 had behavioral or team chemistry issues. None of the GTs have.

Well, that is true but it seems that about the time the GTs get fully acclimated to the team they are on their way . We are playing GT's one year which often means the younger players are not getting enough time to develop.

I guess this is a strategy the coach has to deal with but once you start down that road , I don't see how you can change to develop a balanced roster.
