FL Softball changes end of game routine

interesting to read that FL changed their softball postgame high five to hand shakes. 

That seems weird. So this is going to stop players/coaches from displaying bad blood in this routine? I think their coach is just making more of an issue with what happened. 

And Players always like to do popular things in their routines...This will look strange to me..lol.

Best way to make sure it doesn't happen again is for Walton to stop being an a$$.

Florida softball changes postgame routine in wake of altercation between Tim Walton, Auburn's Haley Fagan

Florida softball has made an apparent change to its postgame routine in the wake of Monday's postgame pushing exchange between Auburn shortstop Haley Fagan and coach Tim Walton.

Following Wednesday night's game with Bethune-Cookman, which Florida won 15-7, the Gators shook hands with the Wildcats players and coaches rather than the usual high fives.

A Florida spokesman did not respond to a request for comment regarding the apparent change in procedure.

The altercation between Fagan and Walton began with the Tigers senior not having her hand up to high five Walton, who pushed her shoulder with his forearm. Fagan then pushed Walton in the back and the two exchanged words.

Walton issued an apology on Tuesday and Fagan, who has not spoken publicly on the matter, won't face any discipline.

An SEC spokeswoman has not responded to a request for comment on the matter.

I wish they would drop all form of post game handshakes across college sports. Its stupid. These athletes are world class competitors and if I just lost a game I would sure as heck not want to be fake nice and show fake sportsmanship towards the other team that I just gave my all against and lost.

I have to disagree. Buck-up and act like a world class competitor. It's called sportsmanship. It's a game, not war.

So basically you're saying that they should be world competitors and leave the "class" out of it. I always thought of the post game handshake as a show of respect both ways.  Maybe I'm too old school.

Nah,,,you are good....for years I've watched NFL guys try to pound each other into dust and then shake hands or hug after a game.  Maybe it's just me but I feel a bit of pride about AU when after a football game, players from both teams kneel on the field for a word of prayer and give each other a pat on the back for a good game.  In facts,something similar is done at the end of just about every world class sport to show respect.   Why should softball be different?

disagree I've had the hell beat out me in both football and golf and have always done the handshake. I will say I've had other guys not shake my hand but &^%$ them if you get my drift.

If professional hockey players can do it after a rough grinding 7 game series.... I'm sure some college softball players should be able to handle it. If you have to fake sportsmanship, you don't know the meaning of that word or it's place in sports, especially collegiate athletics.

I admit I have no sportsmanship whatsoever. I am a terrible loser and do not try to even hide it. I cannot even imagine how some of these athletes must feel after losing a grueling game. I would walk off the floor or field like the bad boys pistons did when the bulls finally beat them in a playoff series.

I advocate dropping it at all levels from college and on. Not just softball.

It's called being respectful toward people.  It's simply basic human decency.  Nobody likes to lose but its part of life.  Sounds like you have a lot of growing up to do.

Good commentary.  

I've never liked the UConn coach Auriemma very much...probably because of his success...kind of like hating the Yankees back in the day when they so totally dominated baseball.   He was used to winning...and winning big most of the time.  But last night after the big upset loss to MSU, he was a true gentleman, was gracious toward the MSU coach and players.....and gave an excellent interview after the game.  He definitely won me over.

You can bet the guy is uber-competitive to achieve what he has...but also has the ability to put things in perspective and showed respect for his opponent and for the game of basketball. The way he handled the loss was also a lesson for his players...about life...and how to keep things in perspective win or lose.

Just hate losing more than I enjoy winning. I will never change it is who I have always have been. I am totally the guy who if I am losing at even a board game I flip the board over before I lose and storm off lol. I am self aware at least and realize it! It is not like I am unaware of what I am doing. I said I wish they would scrap post game handshakes at the college level onward. They can/do teach sportsmanship and human decency as you call it at a younger level too then. It should be ingrained in you by then but when you get to the elite level of competition that is college and up your going to get situations like this more and more because the stakes are so high and the intensity and competitiveness is ratcheted up. There is so much pressure on big time college sports and up. Listen I know most people will not agree with me but that is ok with me! I did not expect anyone too.
