AUBURN, Ala. – If the weekend weather forecast is accurate, Auburn’s softball regional at Jane B. Moore Field could be cut short by rain.

With the forecast calling for 100 percent chance of rain Sunday and 90 percent Monday, the tournament could be cut short. Here’s the NCAA policy should that happen. Chances of rain are 60 percent Saturday. No rain is in the forecast for Friday.

Here is what the NCAA rulebook says about what happens if the regional is not completed:

0 games played: Highest seed advances.

1 game played: Highest seed advances.

2 games played: Highest undefeated seed.

3 games played: Highest undefeated seed.

4 games played: Highest seed.

5 games played: Highest undefeated seed.

6 games played:  Winner of Game 6 unless each team has one loss, therefore the teams are tied, then head-to-head competition is the first tiebreaker and highest seed the second.

Auburn, the No. 7 national seed, opens play against Notre Dame on Friday at 3:30 p.m. California and Notre Dame play at 1.

The threat of bad weather makes it even more important, Auburn coach Clint Myers said, for the Tigers to beat East Tennessee State on Friday and the winner of the Notre Dame-Cal game on Saturday.

“The NCAA is always prepared,” Auburn Myers said Thursday. “They have a formula. They are very aware. We have a meeting at 7 o’clock tonight to go over the what ifs if something should happen where we were unable to play at all on Sunday.”

Gotta Wonder if ESPN wasn't so dead set in having all games broadcasted then the regional could have been moved up and day & maybe finished before the first set of storms get here Saturday.

Good point...it's pretty normal to reschedule regular season games to avoid incoming weather....

The only excusable reason I can think is logistics for the other teams. Don't know what part of the semester they are in or even if they are in school and what not. On the tv side of things ND-Cal could have been moved to ESPN3 on Thursday & we could have preempted Paul Dumbdumb on the SEC Network.

Looks like there is a "system" for dealing with rain outs or incomplete series as you described...and guess NCAA would rather just follow the agreed upon plan than try to shift games around.... which might not be possible at some sites.

As noted....we just need to win our games as they come up and not worry about the rest of it.
