Question though is do we have anyone else that can play the 4 with the quality of play we need & stay out of foul trouble?

Spencer?

I don't know but I REALLY don't see pearl playing a true freshman over Spencer unless he gets in the dog house again. But just having ONE guy that can guard pick and roll and is essentially not a mismatch even when the screen comes and we switch can mess up an entire offensive game plan or offensive set.

And if somehow he can be a good decision maker or ball handler, or scorer (BIG if's I know) well now you have a freak. You have a guy that's a mismatch EVERY SINGLE game. You have a guy that they will spend at least one day prepping for EVERY SINGLE game. You also now have a potential draft pick if he does any of the three things I mentioned well. Ex. Jackson from UNC when he first started playing If he does two of those things he will get drafted and at the least we're a team that's going to the tournament. I.E. Jordan bell of Oregon, or kobi Simmons from Arizona If he does all three including the defense well you have on a lesser scale lonzo ball or Josh Jackson. On a grander one  kwai Leonard or Paul George or LeBron James. Well doubt the LeBron he's a once a generation type guy.

Power forwards are nice but really you just need them to be energy and garbage work guys in college, teams that win championships has 6'7"-8" guys who are wings and are essentially guards. It's actually like that in the NBA as well

These were my thoughts about Chuma.

But while I do like his upside at the 3, with Purifoy getting the majority of minutes there and other players possibly getting minutes there, I could see Chuma getting on the floor a lot more at the 4 this year and possibly even starting there at some point next season depending on where everyone else is playing at the 4/5.

Chuma's ability to rebound, if it translates well, will be appreciated no matter where he plays, imo. And since that was one of our big holes last year, I say get him on the court as much as possible, if he can haul down a good amount per minute.

I'm sort of worried about Purifoy now, he needs to lose at least ten pounds and he needs to attack the basket, for whatever reason we decided to make him a 3 point specialist power forward. And like I said before the season kill his draft stock

I am hoping that is a focal point for the staff this offseason (getting DP back into the attacking the basket role/mentality). In a perfect world, the experience of playing down low and the fact that other teams will have to respect his range will help him incorporate that role better. That's asking a lot. And thinking that should happen would be me wearing way too many pairs of orange and blue glasses. But I hope we at least see the staff taking a step in using DP that way.

Fingers crossed that it was Purifoy's ankle that made him less aggressive and not something else.

We decided to turn him into a 3 point specialist or he decided to turn himself into one? I'd be pretty surprised to find out coaches micro manage players game to that level but maybe they do? :gofig:

I think Spencer and McLemore could both give good minutes at the 4 along with Chuma. The trick is that both those guys will also need to give minutes at the 5 as well so getting them rest and staying out of foul trouble will be kinda tricky for the coaching staff.

I would love to see McLemore play more minutes at 4 than 5. If Wiley can provide scoring, it would free McLemore up for rebounding & trash, with which he excels. With Herron, Purifoy, and Wiley, we're going to need someone who doesn't have to have the ball to provide positive plays. That's McLemore's game.

I posted this awhile back pointing out just how big of an effect that ankle injury had on Purifoy shot selection

Assuming 2FT= a 2FG attempt, Purofy went from 5+ 2FG attempts to <1 2FG attempts per game

Average Purifoy 2FG Attempts Per Game

Pre Inj : 4 Att/Game
"6WK Recovery Period 8 Games": 0.75 Att/Game
Last 5 Games : 5 Att/Game

FT/game

First 7 games back  : 0.7FT/gm

Last 6 games : 3.2FT/gm
