Want to go back to college? Mizzou to rent out vacant dorms for football games

ANDREW OLSON | 1 DAY AGO

There’s nothing quite like going back to the old stomping grounds for a weekend and taking in a football game on Saturday. Alumni love to see what changes are happening on campus and catch up with fellow friends in town. For many, this involves visiting a favorite watering hole or stopping by the old fraternity or sorority house and tailgating close to the stadium. This fall, Missouri will be allowing its fans the opportunity to go back to college – literally – and stay in a dorm on a game weekend.

According to Ashley Jost of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, fans will be able to stay in two-room, four-bed suite for $120 per night with an added cost for parking. Reservations must be made at least 48 hours prior. Jost notes that those renting a dorm room will have access to on campus cafeterias for fans looking an authentic college experience while at MU. Jost notes that Mizzou has not yet decided whether alcohol will be allowed in the rented dorms.

The dorm rentals for football games are seen as a way to offset some of the financial loss from declining enrollment over the past several years, including this fall.

This seems very interesting but just see something going wrong for some reason....Anyone think we should do this though?

  • WarTiger changed the title to Missouri renting out dorms for games

One of the selling points of the dorms for parents is that their kids are more protected for the most part from outsiders. If they start letting anyone into the dorms, I would think some parents will not be happy about it.

I'm fairly certain we don't have declining enrollment. Or empty dorms.

Yeah was thinking the same

This is a big deal....gonna take some time to recover ,  School is in big trouble it seems.

But renting dorm rooms?  .....gotta wonder unless than have an entire building reserved for that purpose.  As noted...mixing students and visitors....not a good idea.

That's a hulk of $$$$ their losing

The tuition revenue decline is now estimated to be $36.3 million, up from an earlier projection of about $20 million. The total budget shortfall is more than $46 million.

And as noted in the linked article...this goes on for several years and the smaller class of freshmen proceed through the system for the next four or five years....and no indication they are getting back to "normal" now either.  School was totally mismanaged ......and paying the price.

The safe space debacle and everything that came with it of a couple years ago really crippled that university. They have been hemorrhaging money since then.

That was pure hell. No good way to handle it.

I just don't see this working well.  If it is rooms in a student occupied dorm, that sounds like a mix for trouble (I know I would not want this as a parent).  If it is an unoccupied dorm, still a lot of money for upkeep to have it ready for a few rooms to rent out.  And probably not a great experience for those going back if the dorm is not up to Hotel room standards.

^What is that gif saying?

Just a guess and I think I'm incorrect but it could go something like this

No matter how big a guy might be, Nicky would take him on. You beat Nicky with fists, he comes back with a bat. You beat him with a knife, he comes back with a gun. And if you beat him with a gun, you better kill him, because he'll keep comin' back and back until one of you is dead.

I'm glad to hear that their choice to willingly participate in the  Political Correctness game is coming back to haunt them.

Karma's a bitch.

“This is the same admissions office that brought us a great deal of success over the decade,” Morrice said. “They are not the reason we have the downturn in the number of applicants and not the reason we have the downturn in yield.”

Hilarious.  Those dumbasses can't see what's as clear as the noses on their face.  Liberalism/socialism comes at a very high price.

The moral to the story is if you can't get accepted to UAt, send your application to Columbia.

I think that quote actually says that they do get it.  It's not the admissions office's fault that enrollment is crashing, it's the administration's fault for kowtowing to the students. The admissions office has been handed a boulder and pointed to a very steep hill to push it up. They are in a no win situation, and honestly, there isn't an easy fix, because if they appease the parents, they alienate the prospective students and if they appease the prospective students, they just keep going down the slippery slope.

I think the reasonable, non-political employees of the school know full well that their idiotic leadership has dug a hole for them that it is going to take years to get out of... if they make it out at all.

Don't want to get into the politics of the issue but there have been enough negative articles in the national media the past couple years to discourage prospective students.....black and white.... from going to Missouri.    It's going to take more than Admissions to turn the ship around..

My thought is that a national championship in some major sport....preferably football or basketball....should do the trick though.  History has shown that to be the case.

The problem is at Missouri ...their sports program has been going down the toilet too.

I honestly don't think it will help. The Midwest, outside of Oklahoma and Nebraska, historically has very deep fandoms that can be turned on and off like a light switch when the teams falter. I don't think winning a national championship in all of the big sports could help. It's not like they have a tradition to fall back on.

What they need is to be able to hold on long enough that time erodes the damage. Whether they can do that... and how much the state will pay to prop them up, is the big question.

"prop them up ".....The state has no choice.  It is THE state's name university.   You are probably correct in that time is the only solution but as best I can tell from current news articles , there is no recognition by school administrators  that things have to change....and I am not sure they could stand the political heat.

I'm still in favor of winning a championship....has made a difference at most places....maybe Petrino or Briles or Freeze....bet one of them could get it done.?

The state has actually been slowly renaming regional colleges as Universities and moving them closer and closer to U of M status. They could just cut bank and promote some of the others who are less dysfunctional.

I bet Southewestern Missouri State University, which not too long ago was promoted to Missouri State University, would be more than happy to take LSU status in the state.

Sounds like they have 7 of them!

"There are seven dorms offline this coming year. Several identified as options for conference rentals, one leased by MU Health, etc."
