How do I delete my PM mail to free up my mailbox?

I can get a list of messages in the box but there is no way to delete them.  I tried marking them and hitting delete but no joy.

In fact, I cannot access the PM "section" of my account at all.

There should be a little checkbox on underneath the avatar of the person who sent you a message in the message list on the left hand side.  Click that at a trash icon should pop up at the bottom to delete the message.
