2017 CONCACAF Gold Cup - USA! USA! USA! wins the cup!

Was a frustrating game.  That is a once preferred centerback, paired with reigning MLS defender of year and our number 2 (aging) keeper.

thought lihaj had a decent showing.  Midfield was just fair.  Other than glimpses, Very little creativity and technical ability in final third.

zardes had a decent game but I just can't seem to like him over others.  He isn't a forward, so wide mid is better but He isn't technical enough, though he thinks he is - but he does make things happen often enough that you can't ignore him.

morris has become more technical and intelligent but there is no denying that speed is his game.  He has to be scary to play against

btw, I thought arriola had a better game than the announcers gave him credit for.  Dude is quick

I don't understand how Guzan still has a place with the national team. He really is utterly terrible. Surely some of the younger keepers could be used instead to spell Tim Howard.

So here's something: It's seemed like awhile since we scored on a corner so I went digging through stats and game reports and found that the USMNT has not scored from a corner since November of 2015. That's a whopping 30 games with no goals from corners. We are 0 for the last 136 chances on corners. That ain't good.

"How the hell did Atlanta United get relegated to the NASL?!"

"Brad Guzan"

Some news. The USA will be calling up Howard, Dempsey, Bradley, Nagbe, Jozy and keeper Jesse Gonzalez for the knockout round.

Panama is crushing Martinique 3-0 in the 68th minute.

37th minute from Corona! About time.

Dwyer is hooked on a through ball, but his penalty is poorly taken and saved. 50th minute.

Right behind, earns us a FK right outside the box. Comes to nothing though.

Rowe in the 56th doubles our lead! Bedoya's 2nd assist!

Rowe is off for Arriola. Good. Need some speed on the wings.

Handball in the box by Nicaragua! Our second penalty in 10 minutes. Corona to take.

And saved off a poorly taken kick again. Two saved penalties. Awful.

Jordan Morris on for Corona. Good. More speed.

Copete gets his second yellow and will finish a man down.

Just saw the tweets. What is this Cold Cup competition & does it have any relevance to World Cup Qualifying? The USA website does a poor job of communicating all that.

No relevance to World Cup Final qualifying. It does play into qualifying for other tournaments like the Confederations Cup though. Our WC Final qualifying rotation resumes in September.

As for what it is:

You've heard of FIFA, the worldwide governing body for soccer. Well, there are also continental sub confederations that operate under the auspices of FIFA. They govern the national teams of their regions as well as the professional leagues. The one you're probably most familiar with is the UEFA, which governs Europe, and also governs club competitions like the Premier League (England), La Liga (Spain),  Seria A (Italy) and by extension the UEFA Champions League. You play World Cup Final qualifiers through your confederation, but the Gold Cup is a different competition.

There are six of these sub confederations. CONCACAF (North and Central America and the Caribbean), CONMEBOL (South America), AFC (Asia), OFC (Oceania), CAF (Africa) and UEFA (Europe).

Each region has a regional championship held every few years. UEFA has Euro for instance, CAF (Africa) has the African Cup of Nations, CONMEBOL (South America) has Copa America etc. We are in CONCACAF, the Confederation of North, Central and Caribbean Association Football, and our tournament is called the Gold Cup. There are qualifiers, but we never have to play in them because big fish like us and Mexico automatically qualify.

It's not typically considered a big time tournament, so among the bigger nations like us and Mexico, you'll see a lot of experimentation with the lineups. We're basically playing our B team, as is Mexico. We're usually so much better than everyone else, that one of us will still likely win it though.

I just saw the highlights.  Wow.  Nice to see the fight to get the result needed, despite missing 2 penalties.  Crazy.  That assist from Zusi along with the header for goal was special.

We need to get Miazga more game time going forward,. Had a few softies, but his passes, especially his outlet passes, were excellent, his goal was a thing a beauty and I was very satisfied with his defending.

Hilariously, we're probably going to get Honduras. A team that has yet to have scored in this Gold Cup. Poor Martinique got screwed by French Guiana.

Quote

Goalkeepers Tim Howard and Jesse Gonzalez, midfielders Michael Bradley and Darlington Nagbe and forwards Jozy Altidore and Clint Dempsey join the roster. The six players replace goalkeepers Brad Guzan and Sean Johnson, midfielders Alejandro Bedoya, Cristian Roldan and Kelyn Rowe, and forward Dom Dwyer
